" RANSSOMWARE ATTACK ON AUSTRALIAN UTILITY CLAIMED BY RUSSIAN-SPEAKING CRIMINALS "

 

SAN FRANCISCO - One of the most prolific Russian-Speaking ransomware gangs has claimed credit for a weekend attack on an Australian electric utility serving millions of people.

 

Australian media reported on Monday December 06, 2021, that Chinese government  hackers were behind the breach at CS Energy, which is owned by the Queensland state in northeast Australia.

 

Those reports, which came amid high tensions between Australia and China, prompted the utility to issue a statement on Tuesday, December 07, 2021.

 

There is " currently no indication that the cyber incident was a state-based attack," the statement cited CS Energy CEO Andrew Bills as declaring.

 

The ransomware group known as Conti, meanwhile, named CS Energy on its web site for shaming victims and sometimes leaking their data.

 

" Conti listed CS Energy on its leak site which, obviously, would indicate that one of its affiliates was responsible for the attack, " said Brett Callow, a threat analyst at security firm Emsisoft.

 

The Australian, the Daily Mail and other media directly blamed the attacks on China.

 

But Callow said that " Conti is believed to be a Russia-based cybercrime operation, not a China-based APT, so it would appear that the attack on CS Energy is simply an addition to the ever-expanding list of financially motivated ransomware attacks." APT is security industry shorthand for Advanced Persistent Threat Groups, which are often backed by governments.

 

Like some other ransomware groups, Conti splits proceeds with affiliates who break into targets before installing its program for encrypting computer files and referring victims to Conti for negotiating payments in cyrptocurrency.

 

Conti and other gangs have increased their attacks on utilities, hospitals and other critical infrastructure in the past year. Western officials and researchers have said some of those groups have ties to Russian intelligence agencies, but no such accusation has been leveled against the Chinese.

OMICRON VIRUS CASE DETECTED IN MALAYSIA - COVID 19

PETALING JAYA, SELANGOR : Health Ministry Khairy Jamaluddin says the first positive case of Omicron has been detected in Malaysia.

 

He announced, it was detected from a sample of a student from South Africa who arrived in the country on November 19, 2021.

 

On December 01, 2021, the Health Ministry imposed entry restrictions on foreign workers and international students from eight (8) African countries with a high risk of Omicron infection.

 

Travellers from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi are not allowed to enter Malaysia for the time being.

 

At a press conference on December 03, 2021, Khairy said the results of the PCR genotyping assay test that came back on December 02, 2021, confirmed that it was the Omicron variant.

 

He said the case involved a 19-year-old female non-citizen who arrived from South Africa via Singapore on November 19, 2021 and had undergone a COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival at  Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

 

" She is a student at a private university in Ipoh, Perak. The case has been given a Surveillance and Observation Order Under Section 15 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342) and (the student) has undergone compulsory quarantine at an accommodation provided by her university," he said.

 

He said the student had taken a bus to Ipoh and close contact tracing had been carried out on the other bust passengers and drivers, totalling five  (5) people.

 

" They have undergone screening and a mandatory quarantine. The first and second sample tests on all close contacts were confirmed negative," he said.

 

On another matter, Khairy said travellers arriving from high-risk countries at KLIA and placed under quarantine will be fitted with digital tracking devices.

 

He said travellers from high-risk countries arriving in Langkawi through its tourism bubble pilot project will need to undergo an additional RTK-Ag COVID-19 test on the third and fifth day from the date of arrival.

 

He also said despite the detection of two (2) cases of the Omicron variant in Singapore, travel to the republic using the land vaccinated travel lane (VTL) will continue.

 

" I have spoken to my Singaporean counterpart, Ong Ye Kung, this morning. We reaffirmed that the VTL will continue and we will continue to update each other on a daily basis and coordinate our response accordingly," he said.

 

On SOPs for the upcoming Sarawak elections, Khairy said they were almost finalised and only a few matters were being refined before they were presented to the Election Commission.

 

" But, definitely, this new development (Omicron case) must be taken into consideration, so the SOPs will be tighter to ensure it does not spread during the elections, " he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, DECEMBER 07, 2021 (TUESDAY) - An 18-year-old boy, who was a victim of human trafficking, refused to return his biological parents in Shenzhen, China, as he felt guilty to his adoptive parents who had been caring for him since his abduction.

 

Sun Zuo was abducted by a man using a toy and snacks in Shenzhen on October 09, 2007, when the boy was four-years-old. As Reported by Global Times.

 

In an interview with China Central Television, Zuo, who is now a senior high school student, told he has a new family now.

He, however, recognised Sun Haiyang as his birth father.

Zuo, who was located in Shandong province, was reunited with Haiyang thanks to the joint efforts of public security departments with DNA comparison and matching technologies.

 

According to the portal, when Zuo went missing, Haiyang had converted the signboard of his steamed stuffed bun shop into a huge sign offering 200,000 yuan (RM 132,905) reward, which he raised by selling his properties.

 

Many times, Haiyang had been told his child had been found only to be disappointed after DNA comparison returned negative.

 

Over the years, Haiyang also formed a union to help other parents facing similar predicament as him to look for their missing children via cooperation with NGOs, police and the media.

 

Haiyang's story was later adapted into a heart-warming movie, Dearest, directed by Hong Kong director Peter Chan, which became a box-office hit in 2014.

 

Since the Ministry of Public Security launched the missing children alert platform called Tuanyuan (Reunion) in 2016 and rolled out a national campaign to fight against human trafficking in January, a total of 8,307 missing children have been found as of November 30, 2021.

 

The authorities have vowed to continue cracking down on all kinds of human trafficking and protect the legitimate rights and interests of children and women.

Parti Sarawak Bersatu's (PSB) candidate for Batu Danau, Ali Adap, expressed satisfaction with the response received from the ground throughout the first five days of campaigning at longhouses and villages in the constituency.

 

He disclosed that he had visited all areas in Batu Danau, Limbang District even before the 12th Sarawak Election Campaign which commenced earlier this week.

 

" I have visited all areas in Batu Danau, Limbang for the past two (2) years, handing out food baskets to those affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

 

" The response received has always been very good with warm welcome throughout my visit to introduce myself," he told reporters when met here Friday, December 10, 2021.

 

Ali further explained that despite facing obstacles and challenges in the new campaigning environment set according to the standard operating procedures (SOP), his mission to meet the people had never stopped.

 

He spokes like other candidates from the opposition and independent, the proposed alternative Limbang - Miri road bypassing Brunei would be given the utmost priority if he is to be given the mandate in the state polls.

 

" If PSB can form a government, the road from Limbang to Miri without going through Brunei will be given priority for us in Limbang apart from turning Limbang Hospital into a specialist hospital," he said.

 

At the same time, looking into the lack of basic infrastructures such as proper roads, clean water supply and Internet facilities, which remain a plight among the residents of Batu Danau, Limbang, area among the manifestos he announced to win on December 18, 2021.

 

Ali explained that his involvement in the 12th State Polls is to contest on behalf of the people in Batu Danau, Limbang District who far behind in terms of development.

 

According to him, there have been no major improvements in Batu Danau, Limbang under the previous government for several decades.

 

He added that currently the residents in the area had to go through bad roads that were not properly maintained by the former elected representative.

 

Apart from the road, Ali said that he would also resolve the clean water supply issue among the rural residents, as well as internet access issue in longhouses in the rural areas of Batu Danau, Limbang District.

KUCHING, SARAWAK : The Sarawak Elections are just a day away and many observers are expecting Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to breeze to a comfortable two-thirds majority win in the state assembly.

 

But it will not be a walkover. There are some seats that will see close fights.

 

A total of 347 candidates and 10 parties are contesting for the 82 seats up for grabs, including GPS, Pakatan Harapan (PH), Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi).

 

Now, takes a look of eight (8) key seats,  with analysts Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir, University Malaya's Awang Azman Pawi, and Singapore Institute of International Affairs senior fellowe Oh Ei Sun weighing in on the likely winners.

 

1# PADUNGAN

Leaving Kota Sentora after 15 years, Sarawak PH chief Chong Chieng Jen will contest in this hot seat against Kuching South City Council mayor Wee Hong Seng of GPS.

 

The seat has been with the opposition since 2006, but incumbent Wong King Wei is not defending it, having resigned from DAP.

 

While Chong has been accused of " running away " from Kota Sentosa, Wee also courted controversy recently after Kuching's Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) claimed it did not nominate him as its candidate. Wee dismissed it as an " internal matter " but the issue will no doubt affect his prospects of winning Padungan. The pair will also be vying against Aspirasi's Lina Soo and PBK's Raymond Thong in a four (4) cornered fight.

 

ANALYSTS' VERDICT:

Awang Azman : 50 - 50 between GPS and DAP

2# BATU LINTANG

The seat has been held by PKR since 2011 but this changed in 2020 when its incumbent, See Chee How, was sacked from the party following the Sheraton Move. He is seeking to be elected for a third (3) term, this time under newcomers PSB. However, he faces a crowded field with four (4) others vying for his seat, including newbie Cherishe Ng from his former party, as well as PBK's Voon Lee Shan, who was the Batu Lintang assemblyman for DAP from 2006 to 2011. GPS's Sih Hua Tong and Aspirasi's Leong Shaow Tung are also contesting for the seat. In 2016, See defended the seat with a 4,385 majority.

The DAP stronghold has been held by the party since 2006, after the constituency was created the year earlier. But Chong, the three-term incumbent, will not be defending the seat, with his special assistant, Michael Kong, taking his place.

 

Kong faces GPS's Wilfread Yap, who had accused Chong of performing poorly in the past five (5) years and " running away " to Padungan. Yap, who had lost to Chong in 2016 by 2,819 votes, will seek to wrest the seat from DAP, while fending off candidates from PSB, Aspirasi and PBK.

4# BATU KAWAH

Incumbent Dr Sim Kui Hian, of GPS, is the favourite to win this Chinese-majority seat. But the SUPP president faces a formidable challenger in DAP's Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who has been growing in popularity since he was elected in 2018. While Sim and Yii are both well-liked figures, the former might just edge it thanks to his performance in Batu Kawah and as state housing and local government minister for the past five (5) years. Other than Yii, Sim will also be up against PBK's Chai Kueh Khun and Aspirasi's Fong Pau Teck.

5# MAMBONG

The seat previously known as Bengoh was won by Jerip Susil in the last elections as a BN candidate but he is hoping to defend the seat as a GPS candidate this time. Jerip had won the seat three (3) times before quitting BN component SUPP to join the BN-friendly United People's Party, which was eventually rebranded as PSB in 2018. After a year in the opposition, he quit PSB and joined GPS. Jerip will be challenged by PSB's Sanjan Daik, DAP's Chang Hon Hiung, Aspirasi's Chong Siew Hung and Joshua Ramon of PBK.

6# SIMANGGANG

GPS's Francis Hardin Hollis is seeking to retain the Simanggang seat for a sixt (6) term, having been first elected in 1996. But a possible cause for concern for the state assistant minister is how his winning majority has dwindled over the years from nearly 7,000 in 2001 to 1,388 in 2016. His closest contenders in this election will be DAP's Leon Jimat Donald, who is contesting the seat for the third (3) time, and PSB's Walsin Wilson Entabang, a former civil servant. PBK has also fielded a candidate in this predominantly Iban seat.

 

ANALYSTS' VERDICT:

Awang Azman: 50-50 between GPS and DAP

Oh: 50-50 between GPS and DAP

 

7# DUDONG

No one party can claim this seat as a stronghold, with the seat changing hands between BN, DAP and PSB in the past decade. A mixed constituency comprising 52% Chinese and 48% Bumiputera voters, this seat has the most number of candidates contesting in this polls, with an eight (8) cornered fight awaiting GPS's Tiong King Sing, Malaysia's special envoy to China.

 

Tiong is a familiar face as he has been Bintulu MP since 1999, but this will be the PDP President's first time contesting for a state seat. He faces candidates from DAP, PSB, PBK, PBDSB, Aspirasi and two other independents.

 

ANALYSTS' VERDICT:

Unanimous, GPS to win

 

8# TAMIN

One of only four (4) straight fights in the elections, the battle for Tamin involves two (2) figures who have represented the constituency before. GPS's Christopher Gira Sambang, the incumbent, will be facing off against veteran Joseph Entulu Belaun, who was the Tamin assemblyman from 1991 to 2006 and MP for Selangau for three (3) terms until 2018.

 

Joseph, formerly from GPS component PRS, was also a federal minister until the fall of the BN government. Suffice to say, it will not be a walk in the park for Christopher, who won the seat with a 2,085 majority in 2016.

 

ANALYSTS' VERDICT:

Jeniri: PSB

Awang Azman: 50-50 between PSB and GPS

Oh: Too Close To Call
