62 CASES OMICRON DETECTED IN MALAYSIA

 PETALING JAYA, SELANGOR:A total of 62 COVID-19 Omicron variant cases have been detected in Malaysia so far. Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced and confirmed on Saturday, December 25, 2021.

 

Out of these, 61 cases were imported infections from abroad while one case is still under investigation and is suspected to be a local transmission.

 

Mr Khairy Jamaluddin said the suspected local infection was reported in Sarawak on Friday involving a 28-year-old Chinese national who has been working at an engineering company in the state for three (3) years and has had no history of travelling abroad during during these years.

 

" He underwent the COVID-19 test on December 18, 2021 after suffering from a fever and cough since December 13, 2021. The sample tested positive for COVID-19 and he was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital on Monday," said Mr Khairy.

 

He added that the case samples were sent to IHCM (Institute of Health and Community Medicine) at University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for genomic sequencing test before they were confirmed positive for the Omicron variant on Thursday.

 

Mr Khairy said that the cause of infection has yet to be identified and investigations are still ongoing by the Kuching Divisional Health Office.

 

He added that the patient is fully vaccinated and that his condition is stable and that two (2) of his close contacts have been identified.

 

Mr Khairy added that the Health Ministry and the Institute For Medical Research (IMR) had conducted a PCR genotyping test on 145 COVID-19 positive case samples among travellers from December 15 to 21.

 

Out the 145 samples, 60 indicated probabilities of being the Omicron variant and on December 24, 45 out of these 60 presumptive samples were confirmed to be Omicron.

 

The IHCM at Unimas had separately detected four (4) new cases of the Omicron variant.

 

" Out of the total 49 new cases, 30 were imported infections from Saudi Arabia, which occurred among travellers who returned to Malaysia after performing the UMRAH (pilgrimage). A large number of them did not adhere to the home quarantine regulations," said Mr Khairy.

 

" They did not isolate themselves from the other family members living in the same house and also accepted guests during the quarantine period," he added.

 

He advised those travelling overseas especially to Saudi Arabia to get their booster shot, adding that the Ministry will be announcing a shorter interval period between the second and third dose next week.

WASHINGTON - A new wave of COVID-19 infections driven by the OMICRON variant is forcing the United States National Institutes of Health to postpone elective surgeries at the largest hospital in the United States devoted to clinical research as a growing number of staff must isolate or quarantine.

 

Dr. James Gilman, the chief executive officer of NIH's clinical center, said in an email to staff that beginning of next week (January Early 2022), elective surgeries would be delayed. At least 80 clinical center staff called in sick on Wednesday alone because of COVID-19 infections or exposures.

 

NIH also is " running dangerously low " on the chemicals required by its laboratories to test for COVID-19 and " reagents are in short supply everywhere," Gilman wrote.

 

The decision is indicative of the kinds of workforce disruptions that are expected as Americans return to their jobs next week following the winter holidays. Across all of NIH, 250 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported between December 20-27 out of an estimated 40,000 staff.

 

" The situation has gotten a little bit worse each day," Gilman wrote. " If there is any good news, it may be that the Omicron peak should be rapid and we can get back to business as usual soon. However, we cannot do business as usual next week."

 

The silver lining is that many cases among staff are mildly symptomatic and don't appear to be spreading within the workplace, Gilman said.

 

" The Clinical Center doesn't currently have staff shortages," NIH spokesperson Renate Myles said. " Dr. Gilman is proactively making changes in anticipation of potential shortages."

 

Last week, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced the isolation period required of healthcare workers, fearing the highly-transmissible Omicron would sideline critical staff just as hospitals are flooded with new COVID-19 patients.

 

The CDC this week also cut in half the recommended isolation period for other Americans with asymptomatic COVID-19 in advance of an expected surge that could force workers in many other industries to stay home even if they aren't ill or infectious.

 

" I point out again the inadvisability of having patients travel to our area (an Omicron hotspot) for any eventuality other than a dire emergency," Gilman wrote to NIH clinical center staff in the suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, outside Washington. They help run hundreds of clinical trials, including for cancer research and rare diseases.

 

" I apologize in advance for taking this precipitous action without more advanced warning but extreme circumstances again call for extreme measures," Gilman wrote.

No Ban UMRAH, MOH Monitors Omicron Cases In Saudi

PUTRAJAYA, SELANGOR: The government has yet to decide on banning Malaysians from performing umrah, amidst reports of COVID-19 cases involving the highly infectious Omicron variant.

 

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the ministry was monitoring the situation in Saudi Arabia closely following the surge and would step up the necessary measures.

 

" We have asked the pilgrims to be fitted with digital tracking device upon returning from umrah. There were some issues at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) where there were not enough counters for returnees (causing congestion there).

 

" I have asked the concessionaire to add more stations and personnel, maybe on Thursday, to ensure a smoother process.

 

" I have also reminded tour operators to ensure that the pilgrims have received their COVID-19 vaccine booster dose before leaving the country."

 

He said the ministry had yet to decide on imposing mandatory quarantine at designated centres for those returning from UMRAH, but advised them to practice self quarantine.

 

He also advised returnees to get tested for COVID-19 during the quarantine period (seven (7) days).

 

" Should the situation in Saudi Arabia deteriorate and transmission of Omicron variant among pilgrims reaches a worrying level, we will have to step up measures like imposing quarantine at designated centres, as well as a travel ban (to Saudi)."

 41 KILLED IN ATTACK BY ARMED GROUPS - BURKINA FASO !

Dozens of people have been killed in an attack by armed groups in Burkina Faso's troubled north.

 

The government announcement that 41 people had died in the attack that took place on Thursday.

 

In a statement released late on Saturday, December 25, 2021, the government said the dead included members of a government-backed civilian self-defence force known as the Volunteers for the Defence of the Motherland (VDP), set up to support the army.

 

According to local media, the ambush targeted a convoy of trades escorted by VDP near Ouahigouya, a town not far from the Mali border.

 

Among the victims was Ladji Yoro, considered a leader of the VDP in Burkina Faso, the government said, adding that the identification of the victims was still under way.

 

Armed groups have driven religious and ethnic tensions between farming and herding communities in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to boost recruitment among marginalised communities.

 

Saturday's attack was the deadliest since mid-November when 57 people, including 53 gendarmes, were killed in an attack on a gendarmerie post.

 

Burkina Faso's ill-equipped army has struggled to contain the spread violence.

 

Last year, the government enlisted the help of volunteer militiamen to help the army but they have incurred retaliation by the rebels who attack them and the communities they help.

 

At least 2,000 people have been killed in the fighting and 1.4 million displaced.

 

Burkina Faso is also facing a political vacuum in the face of the escalating security crisis.

 

Anger at the security situation has spilled over since the attack in November 2021, leading to street protests. The public was also enraged by news that the troops had gone two (2) weeks without food rations.

 

Last week, UN agencies said the worsening violence in the wider Sahel region has led to one of the world's most acute humanitarian crises.
