2 NEW KEY FINDINGS EXPERTS REVEALED AT ZARA QAIRINA'S INQUEST - KOTA KINABALU SABAH MALAYSIA
As of today, 9 September, three experts have testified in the ongoing inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir.
The inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir continued this week with testimony from medical and forensic experts
Over two days of proceedings, 8 and 9 September, the Coroner's Court heard evidence on Zara Qairina's medical condition when she was first admitted to hospital, as well as the authenticity of her handwriting in documents submitted as exhibits.
On 4 September, Dr Jessie Hiu, a forensic pathologist from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, told the Coroner's Court that Zara Qairina's injuries were consistent with a fall from height, dismissing claims that she had been assaulted before her death.
No signs of abuse were found, according to Dr Janefer Voo, the third witness in the inquest
Earlier today, 9 September, Dr Voo, a trainee medical officer at Queen Elizabeth Hospital's Emergency and Trauma Department, testified that Zara Qairina arrived at the hospital unconscious at 4.38am on 16 July.
She told the court the victim suffered swelling and bleeding at the back of her head, fractures on both ankles and her left wrist, and suspected internal bleeding due to "high impact" trauma.
"Based on my assessment, the patient was suspected to have sustained a severe traumatic brain injury … there were no signs of bruising or indications of abuse on the patient's body," Dr Voo said in her witness statement.
She added that after imaging and resuscitation, Zara Qairina was found to have bleeding in the brain, fractures in the ankles, left arm and lumbar vertebrae, as well as blood clots in the pelvic region and left psoas muscle.
Meanwhile, during the inquest yesterday, 8 September, a document examiner testified that Zara Qarina's book contained two different handwriting styles
Forensic document examiner Nurul Atiqah Mohd Noh told the court that a book linked to Zara Qairina appeared to have been co-written.
"The first page contained two different styles of writing… there are two names as owners for this page," she testified.
Her analysis found that some sections of the book matched Zara Qairina's handwriting specimens, while other sections showed "sufficient significant differences" to suggest a different writer.
Lawyers representing Zara Qarina's family later told reporters they will appoint their own handwriting experts to examine 21 exhibits, including schoolbooks and notebooks, to seek an independent opinion.
"We want the truth to be established, and therefore it is only right to seek another expert opinion," counsel Rizwandean M Borhan said.
The Coroner's Court has approved their application for independent experts to conduct an examination.
