SARAWAK DEPUTY PREMIER: USE SIMPLE WORDS, LOCAL DIALECTS TO COMMUNICATE GOVERNMENT POLICIES - KUCHING, SARAWAK MALAYSIA

KUCHING (April 18, 2025): The most effective way to communicate government policies is by using simple language and local dialects, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Speaking at the Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (Azam Sarawak) Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri 2025 here last night, Awang Tengah stressed the importance of accessible communication, especially for rural communities and the elderly.

“The most effective way to communicate is by using simple words, simple language. If we can communicate in local languages, in native dialects, it is even better,” he said.

“Sometimes, we don’t even understand the professional or academic terms. So, imagine how the people in the villages, the elderly especially, can understand. The young ones who go to university might get it, but what about the rest?”

Awang Tengah recalled how regional radio broadcasts in Sarawak once faced the threat of being discontinued, but were saved after he appealed to then federal information minister, the late Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat.

“At one time, the federal government wanted to stop these broadcasts. I told the late Tok Mat, ‘Don’t do that, this is Sarawak… this is the medium we use to communicate information to our people. They are proud of it and understand better when it’s in their language,’” he shared.

He said without proper access to information; people are vulnerable to misinformation and negative perceptions.

“The absence of the right information makes it easier for people to be influenced and to have negative perceptions.”

Awang Tengah praised Azam Sarawak for being a trusted communication bridge between the government and the people since its establishment 42 years ago.

He recalled the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud founded Azam to address the information gap when he was chief minister.

“The government has good policies and programmes, but all of this will be meaningless if the people are not aware. That’s the problem—we have an information gap.”

He urged Azam to continue evolving by embracing technology, building partnerships, and expanding outreach.

“You cannot do it alone. You have to collaborate with many agencies—Ukas (Sarawak Public Communication Unit), and all the relevant agencies.

“We have to communicate, communicate, and communicate,” he stressed.

He also called on Azam Sarawak to expand its influence beyond the state’s borders and position itself as a regional benchmark for development communication.

“Expanding its impact to the Asean region is a natural step forward. With its strong network and proven community model, Azam is well-positioned to serve as a regional benchmark—especially in youth engagement, digital education, community-based media, and social innovation,” he said.

Awang Tengah also launched Azam’s new website to strengthen its role as a platform for development communication, bridge for youth engagement, and catalyst for the Movement for Progress in Sarawak.

Among those present at the event were Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee, Azam Sarawak chairman Datuk William Patrick Nyigor, and chief executive officer Ali Suhaili.
