TWO MEN IN JAPAN ARRESTED FOR PRODUCING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN MYANMAR AND LAOS - NAGOYA JAPAN

NAGOYA

Two Japanese men were arrested this week in separate cases for allegedly producing child pornography in Myanmar and Laos, police said.

The arrests of Yoshihiro Shirai, a 60-year-old dentist from Osaka, and Kazuhiko Uji, a 65-year-old resident of Nagoya, come after Japan's Foreign Ministry warned that child prostitution committed in Laos by Japanese citizens would also be punishable under Japanese law.

The ministry said on its website in June that there have been posts on social media suggesting that Japanese nationals are engaged in child prostitution in Laos.

According to the police, Shirai was arrested for allegedly taking an indecent image of a girl under 18 in Myanmar last October. He has denied some of the allegations.

Uji was arrested on suspicion of secretly filming an indecent image of a girl at a hotel in Laos in March. He has remained silent during questioning, the police said.

Investigators found over 10,000 obscene videos and images among items confiscated from Shirai, while more than 1,000 were seized from Uji.

With investigations into Uji starting last November, the police said records from his smartphone showed that he and Shirai had exchanged information on child prostitution abroad.
