WOMEN NEED TO STAY AHEAD IN AI ERA, BE WARY OF DIGITAL SCAMS - KUCHING SARAWAK, MALAYSIA

KUCHING (May 10, 2025): As the digital world evolves rapidly, Malaysian women are being called to not only embrace new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) but to also understand the risks that come with them.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that digital literacy among women is very important, especially as AI tools become increasingly accessible, for both good and ill intentions.

“In today’s world, women must be aware of emerging challenges, including the use of AI and the growing threat of online scams,” she said during a women’s empowerment programme in her Santubong parliamentary constituency today.

Nancy also warned that many women entrepreneurs are now vulnerable to sophisticated online scammers who exploit AI and digital platforms to deceive victims.

“We must increase digital awareness so that we are not just tech-savvy but also wise in assessing potential risks,” she added.

Beyond safety, Nancy also encouraged women to be bold in pursuing business opportunities while being mindful of risks.

“Not every investment yields immediate returns, but with the right knowledge and networks, it can open doors to long-term success,” she added.

MR KELING BORNEO INTERNATIONAL 2025 TO SHOWCASE STRENGTH, CULTURE IN SARAWAK FIRST HERITAGE - INFUSED BODYBUILDING EVENT - KUCHING SARAWAK MALAYSIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

KUCHING (May 9, 2025): A one-of-a-kind bodybuilding championship that combines physical fitness and cultural heritage, Mr Keling Borneo International 2025, will take place this May 17 at The Summer Shopping Mall in Kota Samarahan.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the event is jointly organised by Buda Gym Enterprise and the state ministry in honour of the legendary Iban warrior Keling Gerasi Nading, famed for his bravery and physical strength.

“This bodybuilding event incorporates cultural elements, making it the first of its kind in Sarawak.

“Participants will wear ngepan (traditional Iban attire) and showcase their muscle symmetry, emulating ‘Keling Gerasi Nading’, in the quest for the title of Mr Keling Borneo International 2025,” he said in a press conference at the ministry’s office in Bangunan Baitul Makmur 2 here today.

The event will be graced by several national sports icons, including boxers Sapok Biki and Kilat Boy; para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin; footballers Ramos and Rames Sari; sprinter Watson Nyambek; weightlifter Stanley Robert; and bodybuilders Liaw Teck Leong and Nolan Chee.

In addition to the athletic competition, seven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will participate to showcase Sarawak’s diverse cultural heritage and traditional attire, further enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the event.

Buda Gym Enterprise manager Buda Anchah said a total of 100 athletes have already registered for the inaugural edition of Mr Keling Borneo International 2025.

Among them, 12 participants are from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), while the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) will be represented by 13 athletes.

Sabah will send eight competitors, while Sarawak will have the largest contingent with 30 participants.

From Peninsular Malaysia, 20 athletes are expected to join.

The event will also see international participation, with nine athletes from Brunei, eight from Kalimantan (Indonesia), and one each from Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

An open walk-in registration session will also be held on May 16 from 10am to 9pm at Buda Gym in Kota Samarahan.

“We are expecting around 50 more people to register. During registration, participants will undergo weight and height measurements and receive their competition attire, including sirat (loincloth) and accessories, along with numbered tags,” said Buda.

Several competition categories will be contested, including Men’s Sports Physique, Men’s Athletic Physique, Bodybuilding (Below 70kg), Bodybuilding (70kg–85kg), and Bodybuilding (Above 85kg).

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to attend the walk-in session. There is no age limit for participants.

Attractive cash prizes are on offer, with the bodybuilding categories offering RM5,000 for first place, RM3,000 for second, RM1,000 for third, RM700 for fourth, and RM500 for fifth — along with medals and supplement packages.

In the Sports Physique category, the top five prizes are RM2,000, RM1,000, RM700, RM500, and RM300, respectively.

The Athletic Physique category offers RM3,000, RM1,500, RM800, RM500, and RM300 for the top five finishers.

In total, RM54,800 in cash prizes awaits participants of the inaugural Mr Keling Borneo International 2025 championship.

“These are among the highest prize payouts for bodybuilding competitions in Malaysia at the moment, so we expect a high number of participants,” said Buda.

SIBU (May 9, 2025): A 26-year-old crew member of a fishing vessel sustained serious injuries to his right arm after it became entangled in a winch cable during an incident off Tanjung Manis yesterday.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Manis Zone Commander Mahkos Juing in a statement today said the agency received an emergency report via the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching, following a distress call from the vessel’s skipper.

“The victim from Bintangor was reported to have got his arm caught in the winch cable during the process of lifting the trawl board at around 8.30pm,” he said.

A medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) was swiftly coordinated, and the injured crewman was transferred to the Tanjung Manis Health Clinic by 1am for further treatment.

He is reported to be in stable condition.

Mahkos urged seafarers to remain vigilant and report any incidents, complaints, or emergencies to the Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 011-35728765 or call the emergency line 999 for immediate assistance.

INDIA LAUNCHES STRIKES ON PAKISTAN, ISLAMABAD VOWS RETALIATION - MUZAFFARABAD, PAKISTAN

INDIA LAUNCHES STRIKES ON PAKISTAN, ISLAMABAD VOWS RETALIATION - MUZAFFARABAD, PAKISTAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (May 7, 2025): India fired missiles at Pakistani territory early Wednesday, killing at least eight people, according to Pakistan, which said it had begun retaliating in a major escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals.

The Indian government said it had carried out “precision strikes at terrorist camps” at nine sites in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, days after it blamed Islamabad for a deadly attack on the Indian-run side of the disputed region.

The Indian army, in a video posted on X after the strikes, said “justice is served”, with New Delhi adding that its actions “have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature”.

Pakistan reported eight civilians — including one child — killed in the strikes, which hit at least six locations.

The country’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif told AFP: “The retaliation has already started. We won’t take long to settle the score.” He accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of launching the strikes to “shore up” his domestic popularity.

Earlier, Pakistan’s military said three locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir had been hit along with two — Bahawalpur and Muridke — in the country’s most populous province of Punjab.

AFP correspondents in Pakistani-run Kashmir and Punjab heard several loud explosions.

Shortly after, India accused Pakistan of firing artillery across the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Kashmir, which could also be heard by AFP correspondents in the region.

India had been widely expected to respond militarily to the April 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir by gunmen it said were from Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba, a UN-designated terrorist organisation.

That assault left 26 people dead, mainly Hindu men, in the tourist hotspot of Pahalgam. No group has claimed responsibility.

New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for backing the attack, sparking a series of heated threats and diplomatic tit-for-tat measures.

Pakistan rejects the accusations, and the two sides have exchanged nightly gunfire since April 24 along the LoC, according to the Indian army. Pakistan also said it has held two missile tests.

Maximum restraint

Wedneday’s strikes are a dangerous heightening of friction between the South Asian neighbours, who have fought multiple wars since they gained independence from the British in 1947.

For days the international community has piled pressure on Pakistan and India to step back from the brink of war.

“The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan,” the spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement, adding that Guterres called for “maximum restraint.”

Asked about the strikes, US President Donald Trump told reporters in Washington he hopes the fighting “ends very quickly”.

India’s embassy in Washington said New Delhi’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had briefed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after the strikes.

Rubio also spoke with Pakistan’s national security advisor, Lt General Asim Malik, a senior Pakistani military official told AFP.

“I am monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan closely,” Rubio said on X, adding that he will “continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution”.

Explosions near LoC

India’s army said it had “demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution”, adding that “no Pakistani military facilities have been targeted”.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling the Indian attack “unprovoked” and “cowardly”, said the “heinous act of aggression will not go unpunished.”

Indian fighter jets could be heard flying over Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.

Loud explosions could also be heard in the town of Poonch, only about 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the LoC.

Rebels in Indian-administered Kashmir have waged an insurgency since 1989, seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan.

India regularly blames its neighbour for backing armed groups fighting its forces in Kashmir, a charge that Islamabad denies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected in New Delhi yesterday, two days after a visit to Islamabad, as Tehran seeks to mediate.

India was also set to hold several civil defence drills Wednesday, while schools in Pakistan’s Punjab were closed, local government officials said.

The strikes came just hours after Modi said that water flowing across India’s borders would be stopped. Pakistan had warned that tampering with the rivers that flow from India into its territory would be an “act of war”.

Modi did not mention Islamabad specifically, but his speech came after New Delhi suspended its part of the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water critical to Pakistan for consumption and agriculture.

“India’s water used to go outside, now it will flow for India,” Modi said in a speech in New Delhi.

ECO-FRIENDLY BURIALS IN CHINA HONORING LIFE BEYOND DEATH - HANGZHOU (MAY 08, 2025)

ECO-FRIENDLY BURIALS IN CHINA HONORING LIFE BEYOND DEATH - HANGZHOU (MAY 08, 2025)

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

HANGZHOU (May 8, 2025): Amid the crisp spring air in Anji County in east China’s Zhejiang Province, with emerald bamboos swaying gently in the breeze, Xia Yuanfeng, a village official, stood holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums.

Traditional Chinese funerals usually follow well-established customs, featuring elaborate caskets, lavish floral arrangements, the billowing smoke of burning incense and offerings, and an array of other rituals.

However, Xia was not visiting a towering gravestone; her father’s peaceful rest lay beneath the gentle embrace of the whispering bamboo grove.

Just days earlier, after a year in the funeral home, her father’s ashes, along with those of eight others, were laid to rest in a collective green burial, returning to the earth beneath the swaying bamboo stalks.

“One should embrace life and death as a return to nature,” Xia recalled her father’s words as dewdrops slid off the bamboo leaves.

“You have always been good to me, and that’s what matters. What happens after I’m gone isn’t important.”

Since 2015, Anji County has championed green burials, offering alternatives like bamboo, tree, lawn and flower burials – methods that forgo traditional gravesites in favor of returning ashes to nature.

Over the past 11 years, 130 individuals have chosen to rest beneath the bamboo.

“We promote green burials through policy support and incentives, creating a diverse ecological burial system,” said an official from Anji’s civil affairs bureau.

“Public acceptance of these space-saving, eco-friendly options is growing each year.”

Across the country, families like Xia’s are embracing greener farewells, choosing harmony with nature over elaborate tombs.

For some, tree burials allow loved ones to take root in the soil, blooming with the seasons. For others, sea burials set them free upon the tides.

Yu Xiaohua, director of the Longshan Cemetery in Jinhua City, noted that there’s a surprising popularity of sea burials inland.

“To date, nearly 900 people have opted for it, many taking a five-hour round trip to Mount Putuo’s shores. Elderly family members still insist on witnessing the farewell.”

He Cuifang, a 60-year-old retired high school teacher from Wuyi County in Jinhua, chose a sea burial for her brother He Guorong after his passing.

Wuyi now offers a 20,000-yuan (about US$2,782) subsidy for each sea burial, a generous amount compared to many other regions.

“My philosophy is simple – cherish loved ones while they’re alive, so there are no regrets when they’re gone,” she said.

“The body is just a vessel. It comes from nature, and the best farewell is to let it return where it belongs.”

An avid hiker, she winced at mountainsides crowded with tombstones.

“Some of them are made of granite, which won’t decompose for millennia. It disrupts nature,” she said.

“With 1.4 billion people, imagine the land consumed if everyone had a traditional grave.”

For centuries, lavish burials were considered the only true demonstration of filial piety, a cultural belief now being reconsidered.

“When my time comes, I’ll tell my son to lay me to rest at sea,” He Cuifang said.

“It’s enough to be remembered in his heart.”

RESEARCHER MALAYSIAN DEVELOPS VEGAN BURGER PATTIES USING OYSTER MUSHROOMS - AGRO-BIOTECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE'S (ABI)

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

KUALA LUMPUR (May 8, 2025): A Malaysian scientist has developed a plant-based burger patty made from grey oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sajor-caju), offering a healthy and affordable alternative to traditional meat burgers.

The innovation, led by Nor Fazila Sulaiman from the Malaysian Agro-Biotechnology Institute’s (ABI) Food Biotechnology Department, targets health-conscious consumers and those with dietary restrictions, without compromising on taste or texture.

The idea emerged when Nor Fazila noticed that despite being widely cultivated in Malaysia, grey oyster mushrooms remain underutilised in processed food products.

“This patty is a great substitute for chicken or beef burgers, which typically contain high levels of fat and cholesterol. It’s also more affordable and ideal for vegetarians,” she said in an interview with Bernama during the recent World Society for Virology 2025 (WSV2025) international conference in Kuala Lumpur.

More than just a meat substitute, the mushroom burger is rich in dietary fibre and suitable for individuals with allergies to eggs, soy, or meat. It also caters to those following low-fat, gluten-free diets.

Nor Fazila added that the patty contains no eggs, soy, or artificial colouring, making it a fully vegan and halal-friendly option.

However, perfecting the product wasn’t without challenges. Due to the high moisture content in mushrooms, frozen patties risk falling apart when thawed. To solve this, she spent a year conducting experiments and stabilised the texture using food-grade ingredients.

“I applied minimal processing methods so small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can adopt the technique without needing costly equipment,” she said.

The prototype is now stable and can be stored frozen for up to three months. Nor Fazila is open to collaborating with companies interested in commercial production.

With its science-backed formulation and responsiveness to local market demands, the mushroom burger represents a significant step towards enhancing food security and making nutritious, inclusive food options more accessible to Malaysians.

ABI is one of three core institutes under the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM), operating under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti).

Police in Minami Alps, Yamanashi Prefecture, have arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of fatally stabbing his 69-year-old father.

According to police, the boy turned himself in at a police station at around 9:40 a.m. on Saturday and said he had killed his father, NTV reported.

Police went to the boy’s home and found his father bleeding from a knife wound and collapsed on his bed. He was taken to hospital where he died at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The high school student lived with his parents, but his mother was out at work at the time of the incident. A blood-stained knife was found in the victim’s bedroom.

According to a close friend of the boy, he had often talked with him about his father's relationships with women since around the fall of 2023, and was worried about the fact that women other than his mother were frequently coming and going to their home.

KUALA LUMPUR COPS SAY MACC WITNESS PAMELA LING BELIEVED TO BE STILL ALIVE AND IN MALAYSIA, ABDUCTION INVOLVED FIVE CARS WITH CLONED PLATES - KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

KUALA LUMPUR (May 8, 2025): Authorities strongly believed Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) witness Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh, who was abducted last month, is still in the country and alive.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said official immigration records showed that Ling last departed Malaysia for Singapore in January.

“As of now, there is no departure movement based on official channels. We believe she is still in the country based on immigration records.

“I am also confident she is still alive for the time being,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Headquarters here.

When asked if there was a possibility of Ling staging her own abduction, Rusdi did not rule it out.

“It’s possible (that she staged her abduction). There are many possibilities.

“Whatever it is, we will eliminate these possibilities one by one (in our investigation),” he said.

Rusdi also said closed-circuit television footage (CCTV) obtained by investigators also revealed there were in fact five vehicles involved in Ling’s abduction, not three initially.

He also confirmed three of the vehicles involved during the interception were using cloned numbers plates.

“We have spoken to the original vehicle owners and they have confirmed that they were in possession of their vehicles at the time of the incident,” he said.

Rusdi also said CCTV footage obtained from Ling’s departure point showed her to be in a calm and collected manner.

“She also showed no sign of struggle and cooperated during the incident,” he said.

As for claims that Ling has been abducted by uniformed personnel, Rusdi confirmed two of the suspects were wearing police vests based on CCTV footages and were therefore impostors.

He said police believed at least eight suspects were involved in Ling’s abduction, namely the five drivers of the vehicles involved and three who disembarked from the intercepting vehicles.

“However during operations, these vests are often not worn in order to conceal our identity or else it could jeopardise the operation entirely.

“I can also confirm that there were no sanctioned police operations at the time of the incident, making it highly possible that Ling’s abductors had worn the vests to masquerade and mislead,” he said.

He also disclosed a photofit of one of the suspects had been drawn but poorly rendered, therefore remained unhelpful as of now.

On April 9, Ling was en route to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to have her statement recorded when her e-hailing ride was intercepted by unidentified persons in several vehicles.

She subsequently failed to appear, prompting her lawyer to file a police report regarding her disappearance on the same day.

No ransom demand has been made in connection with her disappearance to date.
