KOTA KINABALU, OCTOBER 13, 2025 — A student witness told the inquest that 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir was alone in the dormitory toilet after being confronted and scolded by senior students, some hours before her fatal fall.

Counsel Rizwandean M Borhan told reporters that the Form Four witness said Zara Qairina had been called to another dormitory by a group of senior students to be questioned over some stolen items after which some harsh words were uttered.

“The witness said she heard from other students that night that Zara Qairina had locked herself in the bathroom, but she said she didn’t know what time that happened.

“At around 3.50am, the witness was awakened by a friend who informed her that a student had been found unconscious and had been carried to the end of the dormitory block while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The witness later found out that the student was Zara,” he said.

She said a group of Form Four students, part of a group of friends known as Circle 19, had gathered in one of the dorm rooms to confront Zara Qairina that night between 10pm and 11pm.

Lawyer Azhier Farhan Arisin also said that the witness heard someone else swear out loud at night while she was taking her shoes in front of the dorm.

“She heard someone who was at the corridor in front of Dorm A3-5 (Zara’s dorm) say, ‘Itulah mencuri lagi. P**imak anjing. (There you go stealing again. Damn dog). After taking her shoes, I went straight back into her own dorm and went to sleep’,” he said.

The witness also said it was not normal for senior students to use foul language against juniors.

Later that night, she was awakened at around 3.50am by another student who told her that “someone had died”.

When she and other students rushed to the corridor, she saw a student had been carried to the end of the dormitory block while waiting for the ambulance.

Only after arriving at the surau did she learn that the student was Zara Qairina.

She added that it was normal for students to report incidents of theft to teachers rather than taking matters into their own hands.

The witness said that Zara Qairina had previously been called in by senior students several times before July 15, and would often appear sad, stressed, or disappointed afterward.

She said she had met Zara Qairina two or three times in her dorm room after she was called by the senior girls and apologised to her on their behalf because she felt sorry for her.

She had also advised Zara Qairina not to do anything inappropriate, including “cutting her hand” (kerat tangan) or self-harming.

Although she denied seeing Zara Qairina do such a thing, she gave the advice because, in her opinion, people who are stressed or upset might act that way, and she wanted to prevent it from happening.

She also said she did not know what caused Zara Qairina to feel sad or stressed.

She added that before the incident on July 15, Zara Qairina had previously been called in by senior students over issues involving friends, and afterward, the teenager appeared sad and withdrawn.

The witness also told the court that Zara Qairina was a kind person who liked to greet her seniors politely and often shared food with others.

The inquest continues tomorrow.
