JAPAN OPPOSITION PARTY LAWMAKER'S OFFICES SEARCHED FOR ALLEGED SALARY FRAUD - TOKYO JAPAN

Tokyo prosecutors searched opposition party lawmaker Akira Ishii's offices on Wednesday for allegedly defrauding the state by claiming salary expenses for a secretary who did not perform any duties, a source close to the matter said.

In the latest incident in the country's long-standing issue of politics and money, prosecutors seized documents from the Japan Innovation Party lawmaker's office in Tokyo and in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the 68-year-old hails from, it said.

Ishii first became a Diet member after winning a seat in the House of Representatives election in 2009 while running for the now-defunct Democratic Party of Japan. He is currently a second-term member of the House of Councillors after securing seats in the proportional representation section in the 2016 and 2022 elections.

The investigation comes after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party came under intense scrutiny from late 2023 due to revelations that some of its factions failed to report portions of their income from fundraising parties and created slush funds.

In August 2024, former upper house member Megumi Hirose was charged and later found by a court to have defrauded the government of about 3.5 million yen ($24,000) by claiming salary expenses for a secretary who did no work. Her conviction was finalized in April this year.

Similar cases of lawmakers defrauding the state of salaries paid to secretaries performing no duties also occurred about 20 years ago.
