GOVENMENT MULLS AVERAGE YEN 30,000 YEARLY PAYMENTS FOR 20 MILLION WORKERS - TOKYO JAPAN
TOKYO
The Japanese government has presented ruling and opposition parties with a tentative proposal to give some 20 million workers on average around 30,000 yen annually in fiscal 2027 and 2028, a source familiar with the matter said.
The figures were offered as a reference for an income-linked benefit program targeting lower income workers burdened by taxes and social insurance premiums. The upper income limit for eligibility could be set in the 3 million yen range.
The government plans to reduce the consumption tax on food and beverages from 8 percent to 1 percent for two years from April 2027. The payments would total about 600 billion yen annually, equivalent to revenue from the remaining 1 percent consumption tax.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said at a parliamentary session on Wednesday that around 20 million people out of a population of about 120 million could qualify for the payments, stressing that the figure was only a reference.
