DURIAN PRICES FALL AMID SUPPLY SPIKE WITH SELLERS SAYING LOWER PRICES MAY LAST FOR WEEKS IN SINGAPORES

SINGAPORE, DECEMBER 11, 2022(SUNDAY): One kilogram of the highly popular Mousang King durian is now going for as low as S$15 (RM48) to $16 (RM51), according to some durian sellers.

Durian sellers that The Straits Times spoke to said that a spike in supplies from Malaysian plantations in Pahang, Johor and also Genting Highlands contributed to an excess of durians, pulling the prices down.

 

This is the most by which durian prices have dropped in 10 years even though there is a yearly seasonal fall in prices in December, said Ooi Meng Lee, 70 years old,owner of 211 House of Durian in Toa Payoh.

 

AAA grade of Mousang King, which is the top tier of the durian variety, is going for $25 per kg at his shop, a 37 per cent fall from the $45 going price six months ago.

 

The normal-tier Mousang King durian costs $16 per kg, down by 36 per cent from $25 six months ago.

 

His shop has seen sales rise by 40 per cent since the price drop.

 

" Business hasn't been as good as the economy isn't great right now. With inflation and the upcoming GST hike, people are tightening their belts more," said Ooi, who has been selling durians for 25 years, referring to the rise in the goods and services tax to 8 per cent from January 01, 2023.

 

" But more people have been buying from my store nowadays due to the lower prices, so that's very good."

 

Steven Tan, a worker at SAM Fruit Trading in Ang Mo Kio, said that his shop has more durians as suppliers are currently not selling their stocks to China as they get rejected.

 

" I think the lower prices will last until Chinese New Year," said Tan.

 

The prices of other varieties of durian at the shop have dropped by up to almost 50 per cent-the popular Black Gold durian now sells for about $18 to $20 per kg, down 43 per cent from $32 per kg six months ago.

 

The D24 durian sells for about $12 per kg, falling by 33 per cent from $18 six months ago. 

 

Although durian prices have dropped, those who pay lower prices might get smaller durians, said a seller who wanted to remain anonymous.

 

" There are Mousang King durians that are sold for $9 per kg, but they're the really small ones," he said.

 

Prices may also have dropped because there are fewer customers now, with many people overseas for the holiday season, said Ms Linda Ang, 56 years, owner of Combat Durian.

 

" Malaysia is also open now, so people can go there for durians instead of buying them locally. The lower demands leads to lowered prices too," said Ang, who predicts that prices might rise again in a couple of weeks.

AL RAYYAN, QATAR: England's Raheem Sterling will return to their World Cup base in time for the quarter-final clash with France this weekend, the FA said on Thursday, after the forward returned home following a robbery at his residence.

Sterling did not play a part in the 3-0 win over Senegal in the last 16, leaving Qatar last weekend to return to his family.

 

" The Chelsea forward temporarily left to attend to a family matter but is ow expected to rejoin the squad in Al Wakrah on Friday ahead of the quarter-final with France, " the FA said in a statement.

 

England play France at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday, looking to dethrone the world champions and reach the semi-finals again after they fell at the last-four hurdle in Russia four (4) years ago.

 

Sterling made two appearances in the group stages, grabbing a goal and assist in the 6-2 win over Iran in England's opener.

 

But he will be competing for a spot in the starting lineup with Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford--who have both scored three goals in Qatar--as well as Phil Foden.

 

If England go through, they will play the winners of the quarter-final between Portugal and surprise package Morocco.

SERGIO Busquets said Spain's 3-0 defeat on penalties by Morocco was a " CRUEL " way to decide the World Cup last-16 clash on Tuesday, after the teams drew 0-0.

 

The midfielder's spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as the 2010 World Cup winners failed to score any of their penalties.

 

" It was a pity. It was decided on penalties in the most cruel way," said Busquets.

 

" It was tough, very hard for us. We tried to wear them down, give them the runaround, find spaces. We lacked that little luck for the final ball."

 

Spain were also knocked out of EURO 202o on penalties in the semi-finals by Italy.

 

Busquets, 34 years old, would not be immediately drawn on whether he would continue playing international football.

 

" Now the most important thing is the national team and not me," said the Barcelona player.

 

" It's tough night and we have to pick ourselves up and use this as experience for our game. There are some very young players. This will help a lot."

 

Coach Luis Enrique was also contemplating his future. He said he wanted to stay on as but said his future was not yet decided.

 

" I can't say, because I don't know," said the manager, who led Spain to the EURO 2020 semi-finals.

 

" The national team has time. I am very happy with the Spanish FA, the president and with (the sporting director).

 

" If it was up to me, I would stay all my life, but that is not the case," he told a press conference.

" I think in the 120 minutes of the game we were superior to our opponents, but what I say counts for little now if we can't find the net," added Simon, who saved Badr Benoun's penalty.

 

" In the shoot-out they were superior and that is what took them to the quarter-finals.

 

Luis Enrique's side missed all three spot-kicks, with Pablo Sarabia hitting the post, whilve Yassine Bounou saved Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets's efforts.

 

" I chose the takers, I thought they were the best on the pitch," said Luis Enrique.

 

" I have to think calmly what is the best for me and for the national team. All situations will have an influence."

CAMPAIGN FOR PADANG SERAI, TIOMAN SEATS ENDS TONIGHT

KUALA LUMPUR, DECEMBER 06, 2022:The 15th General Election (GE15) campaign for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat and the Tioman state seat, which started November 24, 2022, will end at 2359pm today.

After that, all candidates contesting for the seats will be prohibited from campaigning or canvassing for votes as it is polling day.

According to the official website of the Election Commission (SPR), subsection 26(1) of the Elecation Offences Act 1954 prohibits anyone from holding convening or organising any form of meeting, rally, show, entertainment or giving public speeches.

 

The law also prohibits anyone from furnishing or supplying any loudspeakers for political purposes and opening or establishing or maintaining an office or a booth within the constituency in which a candidate seeks election for any purpose connected with an election on polling day.

 

Any person who contravenes any of the provisions shall be liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or to a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or both.

 

Polling for GE15 for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat and the Tioman state seat was postponed following the death of a candidate vying for the seats, namely M. Karupaiya of Pakatan Harapan (PH) for Padang Serai and Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Md. Yunus Ramli for Tioman.

 

Karupaiya, 69, died on November 16, 2022, believed to be due to a heart attack and health complications, while Md Yunus, 61, died on the polling day for GE15 on November 19, 2022.

 

The contest for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat will see a six-cornered fight among Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr Mohamad Sofee Razak, Datuk C. Sivaraajh (Barisan Nasional), Datuk Azman Nasrudin (Perikanan Nasional) and Hamzah Abd Rahman (Pejuang).

 

The other two (2) contenders are Mohd Bakhri Hashim, representing Warisan, and independent candidate Sreanandha Rao.

 

However, last December 02, 2022, BN agreed to give way to PH for the parliamentary seat.

 

Prior to that, Warisan announced that it woud not take part in the election, but the party logo would still appear on the ballot paper, as it had already been registered as one of the competing parties.

 

Meanwhile, the Tioman state seat will witness a five-cornered fight that included PN candidate Nor Idayu Hashim, Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain (BN), Osman A Bakar (Pejuang), Sulaiman Bakar (Independent).

 

The other candidate, Mohd Fadzli Mohd Ramly, of PH, is making way for the BN candidate to increase the latter's chances of winning, but his (Mohd Fadzli) name will still be on the ballot papers.

 

According to the EC, the status of the candidates cannot be changed after their nominations were accepted.

 

The Electoral Roll for the Padang Serai seat contains 133,867 electors voters, while for Tioman, there are 28,465 registered electors.

MORE INDEPENDENT CHINESE SCHOOLS will built in the Petaling Jaya and Hulu Langat, Selangor districts to accommodate the higher demands for student placement at vernacular schools in Selangor Darul Ehsan.

Menteri Besar (MP) Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari told media the new locations were being identified and expected to be finalised by the first quarter in year 2023.

" At present, there are only four independent Chinese schools in the state, and all of them are located in the Klang district.

 

" In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of students at these institutions.

 

" There is a need to build more such schools to accommodate the growing number of students," he said, in response to questions by Lee Kee Hiong (Kuala Kubu Baharu - Pakatan Harapan) at the state assemly sitting.

 

On another question about the state's assistance for Chinese independent schools, Amirudin said RM2mil was distributed as of October 17, 2022.

 

On a related matter, he noted that some RM26mil was allocated this year for the redevelopment and upgrading of infrastructures at schools in Selangor Darul Ehsan.

 

During the state assembly session on March 15, 2022, Amirudin explained this allocation was a 11.6% increase from last year's RM23.2mil, which benefited 600 schools statewide.

 

He noted that RM13mil was meant for religious schools, RM13mil (Chinese schools), RM5mil (Tamil schools), RM1mil (missionary and independent schools) and RM1mil for national schools.
