CHINA DEPLOYS WARSHIPS NEAR TAIWAN AFTER TSAI - MCCARTHY MEETING

CHINA DEPLOYS WARSHIPS NEAR TAIWAN AFTER TSAI - MCCARTHY MEETING

@Jackie San

TAIPEI (April 6, 2023): China deployed warships through waters around Taiwan today as it vowed a “firm and forceful” response to the island’s president meeting US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen held talks with McCarthy in Los Angeles on Wednesday, expressing gratitude afterwards for the meeting that included other US lawmakers.

“Their presence and unwavering support reassure the people of Taiwan that we are not isolated and we are not alone,” Tsai told reporters.

China had repeatedly warned both sides the meeting should not take place, and deployed an aircraft carrier through waters southeast of Taiwan hours before the talks.

Three additional warships were detected in waters separating the island from mainland China, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said this morning.

An anti-submarine helicopter had also crossed the island’s air defence identification zone, according to the ministry.

And China deployed coastguard vessels for unusual patrols that sparked a protest from Taiwan.

Despite Taiwan having been ruled separately for more than 70 years, China views it as part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.

China carried out its largest-ever air and sea exercises around Taiwan following a visit in August last year by McCarthy’s predecessor, Nancy Pelosi, to the island.

China then deployed warships, missiles and fighter jets into the waters and skies around Taiwan.

Its response to the McCarthy meeting has so far been on a much lower level, but still left Taiwan on high alert.

Taiwan’s defence minister described the timing of the deployment of the Shandong, one of just two Chinese aircraft carriers, as “sensitive”.

“When an aircraft carrier comes out, there are usually takeoffs and landings for aircraft but we have not found any takeoff or landing. We will keep watching,” Chiu Kuo-cheng told reporters.

When asked if Shandong’s deployment was a prelude to Chinese military exercises, Chiu said: “We are not ruling this out”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently hosting French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen as the EU attempts to repair relations with Beijing.

‘UNWAVERING SUPPORT’

Tsai’s visit to California was technically a stop-over after a trip to Latin America to see two of Taiwan’s dwindling band of official diplomatic allies.

China had repeatedly issued warnings ahead of the Tsai-McCarthy meeting and issued another strong rebuke this afternoon.

“China will take firm and forceful measures to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular briefing.

McCarthy, who is second in line to the US presidency, had originally planned to go to Taiwan himself but opted instead to meet Tsai in California.

The decision was viewed as a compromise that would underscore support for Taiwan but avoid inflaming tensions with China.

McCarthy said after meeting Tsai that a shared belief in freedom and democracy underpinned a relationship that was “a matter of profound importance to the free world”.

McCarthy vowed US arms sales to Taiwan — which infuriate Chinese leadership — would continue, in what he said was a proven strategy to dissuade aggression.

“And what we know through history, the best way to do that is supply the weapons that allow people to deter war,” he said.

“It is a critical lesson that we learned through Ukraine, that the idea of just sanctions in the future is not going to stop somebody” who wants to wage war.

An eight-member US congressional delegation also arrived in Taiwan today to hold talks on trade and security — such visits have increased in recent years.

CHINA PRESSURE !

There were no initial signs of extra military activity this morning on Pingtan island in southeastern China — home to a People’s Liberation Army base and known as the closest point on the mainland to Taiwan.

AFP journalists on Pingtan last year had witnessed missile launches and army helicopters flying over the island following Pelosi’s visit.

However, Taipei’s top China policy-making body, the Mainland Affairs Council, said Chinese coast guard vessels were “obstructing” trade by carrying out on-site inspections on cargo and passenger ships.

Chinese maritime authorities on Wednesday announced coastguard patrols in the Taiwan Strait.

“The Chinese side’s action deliberately escalates cross-strait tensions,” the Mainland Affairs Council said late Wednesday.

“(This) is a clear violation of the cross-strait shipping agreement and maritime practice which will have a serious adverse impact on the normal traffic between the two sides.”

Taiwanese vessels have been ordered to refuse Chinese inspection demands, Taiwan National Security Bureau deputy director general Ko Cheng-heng said today.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH APPROVES KOSELUGO WITH "ORPHAN MEDICINE" STATUS

MINISTRY OF HEALTH APPROVES KOSELUGO WITH "ORPHAN MEDICINE" STATUS

@Jackie San

PUTRAJAYA (April 6, 2023): The Ministry of Health (MOH) has agreed to give ‘orphan medicine’ status to Koselugo Hard Capsules 10 milligrammes (mg) and 25 mg, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a statement today, Dr Noor Hisham said the decision to approve the product was made at the 383rd Drug Control Authority (PBKD) meeting convened today.

Koselugo is a prescription drug used in the treatment of children, aged three and above, with a rare disorder called neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

He said the drug, produced by Patheon Pharmaceuticals Inc., in the US, was given the orphan medicine status after it was processed as a ‘priority review’.

According to him, the evaluation period for the ‘priority review’ registration is 120 working days compared to 245 working days for the normal registration route.

“Koselugo is the first product approved by PBKD for neurofibromatosis type 1 with inoperable plexiform neurofibromas,” he said.

NF1 is listed as a rare disorder in the Malaysian Orphan Medicines Guideline.

Dr Noor Hisham added that MOH through the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) will continue to monitor and evaluate the latest data from time to time regarding information on the quality, safety and effectiveness of the Koselugo product.

AUSTRALIA BANS TIK TOK ON GOVERNMENT DEVICES

AUSTRALIA BANS TIK TOK ON GOVERNMENT DEVICES

@Jackie San

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA (April 4, 2023): Australia said Tuesday it will ban TikTok on government devices, joining a growing list of Western nations cracking down on the Chinese-owned app due to national security fears.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the decision followed advice from the country’s intelligence agencies and would begin “as soon as practicable”.

Australia is the last member of the secretive Five Eyes security alliance to pursue a government TikTok ban, joining its allies the United States, Britain, Canada and New Zealand.

France, the Netherlands and the European Commission have made similar moves.

Dreyfus said the government would approve some exemptions on a “case-by-case basis” with “appropriate security mitigations in place”.

Cybersecurity experts have warned that the app — which boasts more than one billion global users — could be used to hoover up data that is then shared with the Chinese government.

Surveys have estimated that as many as seven million Australians use the app — or about a quarter of the population.

In a security notice outlining the ban, the Attorney-General’s Department said TikTok posed “significant security and privacy risks” stemming from the “extensive collection of user data”.

China condemned the ban, saying it had “lodged stern representations” with Canberra over the move and urging Australia to “provide Chinese companies with a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment”.

“China has always maintained that the issue of data security should not be used as a tool to generalise the concept of national security, abuse state power and unreasonably suppress companies from other countries,” foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.

But Fergus Ryan, an analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said stripping TikTok from government devices was a “no-brainer”.

“It’s been clear for years that TikTok user data is accessible in China,” Ryan told AFP.

“Banning the use of the app on government phones is a prudent decision given this fact.”

The security concerns are underpinned by a 2017 Chinese law that requires local firms to hand over personal data to the state if it is relevant to national security.

Beijing has denied these reforms pose a threat to ordinary users.

China “has never and will not require companies or individuals to collect or provide data located in a foreign country, in a way that violates local law”, the foreign ministry’s Mao said in March.

TikTok has said such bans are “rooted in xenophobia”, while insisting that it is not owned or operated by the Chinese government.

The company’s Australian spokesman Lee Hunter said it would “never” give data to the Chinese government.

“No one is working harder to make sure this would never be a possibility,” he told Australia’s Channel Seven.

But the firm acknowledged in November that some employees in China could access European user data, and in December it said employees had used the data to spy on journalists.

The app is typically used to share short, light-hearted videos and has exploded in popularity in recent years.

Many government departments were initially eager to use TikTok as a way to connect with a younger demographic that is harder to reach through traditional media channels.

New Zealand banned TikTok from government devices in March, saying the risks were “not acceptable in the current New Zealand Parliamentary environment”.

Earlier this year, the Australian government announced it would be stripping Chinese-made CCTV cameras from politicians’ offices due to security concerns.

DEFENDANT TRUMP SLAMS CRIMINAL CHARGES AS " INSULT TO OUR COUNTRY "

DEFENDANT TRUMP SLAMS CRIMINAL CHARGES AS " INSULT TO OUR COUNTRY "

@Jackie San

PALM BEACH (April 5, 2023): Donald Trump offered a full-throated defense of his conduct Tuesday in his first public remarks since being charged over hush money payments to a porn star, blasting the criminal prosecution as “an insult to our country”.

Hours earlier the 76-year-old former US president pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts in a dramatic hearing in New York that transfixed the nation — and began the countdown to the first ever criminal trial of an American president.

“I never thought anything like this could happen in America — never thought it could happen,” Trump told an audience of several hundred donors, political allies, and other supporters after returning to Mar-a-Lago, his beachfront mansion in southern Florida.

“The only crime that I’ve committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it … It’s an insult to our country.”

Trump — the frontrunner in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination — said from a stage festooned with American flags in an opulent gold-and-cream ballroom that “radical left” prosecutors across the country were out to get him “at any cost”.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is prosecuting Trump for cooking his company’s books to hide payments he arranged to adult film actress Stormy Daniels days before the 2016 election, to cover up an alleged sexual encounter a decade earlier.

Trump’s former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg is serving a five-month jail term for the same charge of falsifying business records.

Manhattan prosecutors say Trump “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election”.

A “statement of facts” released alongside the indictment included details of hush money payments to Daniels, Playboy model Karen McDougal and a former Trump Tower doorman claiming to have a story about a child Trump had out of wedlock.

– ‘Darkest hours’ –

Daniels was paid US$130,000 by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, while McDougal and the doorman got US$150,000, and US$30,000 respectively from AMI, the publishers of supermarket tabloid the National Enquirer.

Bragg alleges that Trump and his allies “also took steps that mischaracterised, for tax purposes, the true nature of the payments”.

Trump and his lawyers have accused Bragg of over-reaching in his characterisation of the allegations.

The one-time reality TV star had sent a fundraising email shortly before flying back to Florida, saying that since the news of his indictment broke, his campaign had raised over US$10 million.

“While we are living through the darkest hours of American history, I can say that at least for this moment right now, I am in great spirits,” Trump said.

The twice-impeached Republican is the first sitting or former American president to be criminally indicted.

Earlier in the Manhattan courtroom, he answered “not guilty” to all charges in a clear voice, sitting with hunched shoulders and at times looking annoyed but mostly listening cooperatively.

Judge Juan Merchan said a trial could potentially start as soon as January — a month before the presidential primaries kick off — although Trump’s lawyers have indicated they would want it pushed back to next spring.

– More serious charges –

In a spectacle that played out on live television — with rival protesters rallying outside — the hearing marked a watershed moment for the US criminal and political system.

A crowd of hundreds had gathered, with pro-Trump protesters — sporting “MAGA” hats and attire emblazoned with the American flag — yelling slurs at their opponents.

Trump for years rejoiced in his reputation as a playboy but has always denied the tryst with Daniels, which would have occurred just after his third wife Melania gave birth.

He faces a series of separate criminal investigations at state and federal level that could result in further — more serious — charges between now and Election Day.

They include his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state of Georgia, his handling of classified documents, and his involvement in the storming of the US Capitol on Jan 6, 2021.

While Republicans have largely rallied around Trump, President Joe Biden — mindful of his potential 2024 rival’s accusations that the judicial system is being politically “weaponised” — has refrained from commenting in any detail.
