UNITED STATES STEEL DETAILS PLAN TO INVEST $11 BILLION BY 2028 ACROSS ALL BUSINESS SEGMENTS - PITTSBURGH

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

United States Steel on Tuesday detailed its billion-dollar multiyear growth plan with new owner Nippon Steel that includes modernizing the century-old steelmaker.

The announcement comes just five months after Nippon Steel finalized a “ historic partnership ” with the Pittsburgh steelmaker in a deal worth nearly $15 billion. That deal included a “golden share” provision that gave the federal government the power to appoint a board member and a say in some company decisions.

The combined company became the world’s fourth-largest steelmaker, and Nippon agreed to invest $11 billion to upgrade U.S. Steel's facilities.

Tuesday the company said it will make the investments by the end of 2028. The plan targets unlocking $2.5 billion in savings from capital investments and another $500 million from operational efficiencies.

U.S. Steel says it has identified more than 200 initiatives to save money across all business segments, assisted by nearly 50 professionals from Nippon Steel. The company is modernizing and expanding its manufacturing operations and expanding research and development to feature “higher value, lower emission steel."

CEO Dave Burritt said, “We have a robust pipeline of growth projects, ranging from the modernization of our Gary (Indiana) Works Hot Strip Mill to the new slag recycler at Mon Valley Works (Pennsylvania) and the development of new product capabilities."

The plan is designed to “protect and create more than 100,000 jobs nationwide in the United States,” although U.S. Steel did not provide more specifics.

David McCall, president of United Steelworkers International, said in a statement, "Since our first engagement with Nippon, we’ve been clear that investing in these workers and their facilities is the best use of the company’s resources. As Nippon and U.S. Steel begin to lay out their vision, we encourage them to prioritize this skilled, union workforce – now and well into the future.”

TAKAICHI VOWS TO MAKE ROBUST ECONOMY VIA SPENDING IN 17 STRATEGIC AREAS - TOKYO JAPAN

TAKAICHI VOWS TO MAKE ROBUST ECONOMY VIA SPENDING IN 17 STRATEGIC AREAS - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi vowed Tuesday to boost investments in 17 strategic fields, including artificial intelligence and shipbuilding, as her administration seeks to revitalize Japan's economy through public spending.

At the first meeting of the government's growth strategy panel, Takaichi assigned each of the 17 areas to relevant ministers and instructed them to draw up road maps detailing specific investment plans.

The government will "powerfully advance a growth strategy to realize a robust economy," Takaichi said, aiming to finalize the plan by next summer.

Takaichi vowed to realize a "virtuous cycle" in which corporate earnings and household incomes rise, eventually boosting tax revenues through the growth strategy.

The 17 strategic fields include AI and semiconductors, aviation and space as well as biotechnology, according to the government.

Another field, shipbuilding, is an area where Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to promote cooperation during their meeting last week.

Under a bilateral trade deal reached in July under Takaichi's predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba, Japan pledged to invest $550 billion in key U.S. industries, including shipbuilding, in return for the lowering of higher tariff rates imposed by Trump.

Takaichi launched the Council for Japan's Growth Strategy, involving her entire cabinet, after taking office last month as Japan's first female prime minister. It replaced another council set up under the administration of former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In her first policy speech since taking office on Oct 21, Takaichi stressed the need to achieve robust economic growth through bold strategic investments that enhance resilience against potential crises.

Takaichi also pledged to ensure the public and private sectors work hand in hand to make preemptive investments to address various risks and social issues, including economic and food security.

TAKAICHI PRAISED FOR 'ENERGETIC' DIPLOMATIC DEBUT HOSTING TRUMP - TOKYO JAPAN

TAKAICHI PRAISED FOR 'ENERGETIC' DIPLOMATIC DEBUT HOSTING TRUMP - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi won praise in her country's parliament on Tuesday for a diplomatic debut that included hosting U.S. President Donald Trump — but was scolded by the opposition leader for what he said was going too far in flattering Trump.

Takaichi held a summit with Trump last Tuesday, only a week after she took office as Japan’s first female leader, and attended two regional summits.

Yoshihiko Noda, head of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, remarked on Takaichi’s “big smiles” and noted she was "full of energy,” saying she had earned Trump’s praise as a “very energetic woman.”

He added, “I believe you are off to a good start in building a personal relationship.”

Noda, however, criticized Takaichi for “flattery diplomacy to the extreme" for plans to nominate Trump for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Takaichi would be nominating Trump for the prize.

“It was too careless,” Noda told Takaichi during Tuesday’s lower house session. Noda cited Trump’s later suggestion that the U.S. would resume nuclear testing — an extremely sensitive issue in Japan due to the nuclear bombs the U.S. dropped on the country at the end of World War II.

Noda asked Takaichi if she still planned to nominate Trump for the peace prize in light of that announcement. She did not comment.

Takaichi's recent talks with China’s President Xi Jinping and South Korea’s Lee Jae Myung and a promise to develop stable ties have also been well received.

Her past views defending Japan’s World War II actions and visits to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine — viewed by Asian victims of Japanese wartime aggression as signaling a lack of remorse — had been seen as risks to relations with Seoul and Beijing. However, she has toned down her hawkish stance. She also skipped her seasonal Yasukuni visit last month and donated a religious ornament instead.

Takaichi has enjoyed support ratings of around 60-70% since taking office, and one taken over the weekend after her diplomatic debut was even higher at about 80%, though support for her Liberal Democratic Party remains little changed at around 20-30%.

Her struggling party and its ruling coalition with a new partner, Japan Innovation Party, lacks a majority in both houses of parliament, meaning the coalition cannot achieve any policy without cooperation from the opposition.

Earlier Tuesday, Takaichi’s government launched a ministerial meeting to address foreigner-related issues. These include investment, land transactions, labor and tourism. The move comes after an ethnocentric campaign by a right-wing party in the summer gained popularity. Voters have been frustrated by rising prices, dwindling wages and bleak prospects for the future.

The government aims to compile stricter measures to tackle these concerns.

“Illegal activity among some foreigners is causing a sense of uneasiness and unfairness among the Japanese people,” Takaichi said. “The government will resolutely respond to these actions, while distancing itself from xenophobia.”

Takaichi also held a first meeting of a task force for economic growth through public-private investment in 17 areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, shipbuilding and defense.

During Trump’s visit, Takaichi strengthened her reputation as protege of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whom Trump had friendly ties with, and agreed to build a “golden age” of Japan-U.S. ties.

GOVERNOR AKITA ASKS SDF TO HELP CULL BEARS AS ATTACKS SPIKE - AKITA JAPAN

GOVERNOR AKITA ASKS SDF TO HELP CULL BEARS AS ATTACKS SPIKE - AKITA JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

AKITAThe governor of Akita Prefecture, a mountainous northern region, has called for the military's help to protect residents from an unprecedented wave of bear attacks.

"Exhaustion on the ground is reaching its limit," Governor Kenta Suzuki said in an Instagram post on Sunday. He said he planned to visit the defense ministry in person as soon as Tuesday to ask for its help with a bear cull.

A defense ministry spokesperson said she was unaware of any planned visit.

Suzuki's plea came after a bear attack in Akita on Friday in which one person was killed and three others injured, amid a record number of attacks across the country this year.

Local authorities in Akita say 54 people have been killed or injured this year, up from 11 last year, while sightings have increased around six-fold to more than 8,000 incidents.

Rising bear numbers and depopulation in rural areas are increasingly bringing people into contact with bears. Many encounters have occurred in towns and villages where the animals forage for food, sometimes entering homes, and on at least two occasions, supermarkets.

Japan's aging population also means it has too few qualified hunters to track down bears, which appear less fearful of humans than in the past.

Japanese black bears, common across most of the country, can weigh up to 140 kg. Brown bears on its northern island of Hokkaido can weigh as much as 400 kg.

Akita has begun "distributing bear-repellent spray along school routes to ensure children's safety," Suzuki said in his post.

JAPAN TO KEEP IMPORTING RUSSIAN LNG, TAKAICHI TELLS TRUMP - TOKYO JAPAN

JAPAN TO KEEP IMPORTING RUSSIAN LNG, TAKAICHI TELLS TRUMP - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told U.S. President Donald Trump during their first summit on Tuesday that Japan intends to keep importing Russian liquefied natural gas for the time being, a Japanese government source said Wednesday.

The United States had been urging Japan to end Russian energy imports to reinforce sanctions on Moscow over its full-scale war against Ukraine that began in 2022.

At the meeting with Trump in Tokyo, Takaichi, who took office on Oct 21, stressed the necessity of buying Russian-produced LNG, citing the risk of domestic power shortages if imports were stopped , the source said.

In 2024, Russian LNG accounted for 8.6 percent of Japan's total imports of the energy source, which is mainly used for thermal power generation and city gas.

The gas comes from the Sakhalin 2 energy project in the Russian Far East, in which two Japanese firms continue to hold stakes even after British oil major Shell PLC withdrew following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Tokyo has faced criticism that payments for Russian LNG help fund Moscow's war effort, while the European Union is set to fully suspend such purchases by the end of 2026.

Takaichi, a staunch conservative, is known for sharing hawkish views on diplomacy and security with Japan's longest-serving prime minister, Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated in 2022.

Abe, who pursued dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, met him 27 times during his tenure through 2020 in a bid to resolve a territorial dispute but made no progress.

Takaichi has inherited the same unresolved issue over the Russian-held, Japanese-claimed islands off Hokkaido -- known as the Northern Territories in Japan and the Southern Kurils in Russia -- which continues to prevent the signing of a postwar peace treaty.

FAMILY SEEKS ANSWERS AFTER 34-YEAR-OLD HIKER DIES ALONE OF HYPOTHERMIA ON GUNUNG LIANG, PERAK MALAYSIA

FAMILY SEEKS ANSWERS AFTER 34-YEAR-OLD HIKER DIES ALONE OF HYPOTHERMIA ON GUNUNG LIANG, PERAK MALAYSIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

A 34-year-old hiker was found dead at the summit of Gunung Liang in Tanjung Malim, Perak, on Thursday, 16 October.

The victim, Mustaqqeem Mansoor, had joined a group of 11 people — nine participants and two mountain guides — for a three-day expedition that began on Friday, 10 October, from Bukit Fraser, Pahang.

According to Harian Metro, the group was originally scheduled to descend via Gunung Liang on Monday, 13 October, but their journey extended into a fourth day.

Mustaqqeem reportedly suffered muscle cramps and was last seen close to the mountain's summit at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, 14 October.

On Tuesday night, the group decided to continue their descent as camping at the summit was not possible due to bad weather.

They believed Mustaqqeem would be safe as he was accompanied by a designated mountain guide known as the sweeper — the last person ensuring no one is left behind.

Speaking to Berita Harian, a close friend of the victim, Muhammad Hafidz Mohd Kamal, 36, said they never abandoned Mustaqqeem and trusted the guide to assist him down.

However, after reaching the base at around 6.30am on Wednesday, 15 October — having already waited three hours earlier along the trail for Mustaqqeem to catch up — Hafidz waited again until 8am.

When neither Mustaqqeem nor the sweeper arrived, he grew worried and decided to gear up to climb back up the mountain to search for them at around 9am.

During his search, Hafidz said he encountered the sweeper, Rahimi, at around 12.45pm, who told him that Mustaqqeem was slowly making his way down from the peak.

When he did not appear, they continued their climb to search for him. However, at around 6pm, Hafidz said bad weather forced both of them to turn back to the base.

It was Mustaqqeem's wife, Nur Faratin, who eventually lodged a missing person's report after learning about her husband's disappearance from the hikers.

In an interview with Harian Metro, Rahimi, 50, said he had accompanied Mustaqqeem throughout the expedition. According to Rahimi, Mustaqqeem was still able to walk slowly despite his muscle cramps, but they were still far behind the group.

Rahimi recalled that on the night of Tuesday, 14 October, he and Mustaqqeem were at the summit of Gunung Liang.

"After eating and drinking, we decided to descend at around 10.30pm. He was weak but could still walk slowly.

"In the darkness, I could clearly see his headlamp moving down from the summit, even though it was raining heavily and the weather was cold. I moved slowly while waiting for him, confident he would be able to descend without any problems," Rahimi said.

However, Rahimi lost track of Mustaqqeem after the former went ahead briefly to scout the trail and look for mobile coverage to contact the other guide and the expedition organiser.

Rahimi explained that as the sweeper, he never intended to leave Mustaqqeem behind and waited for him at several points along the route.

"I was too exhausted to go back and look for him, especially since I had injured my toes and had to wear slippers to continue the journey. I never imagined something so tragic could happen," he added.

Mustaqqeem was eventually found dead at 3.30pm on Thursday, 16 October, at the summit of Gunung Liang

His body was airlifted from the 1,933-metre mountain the following day using a Fire and Rescue Department helicopter after weather conditions improved.

A post-mortem conducted at Hospital Slim River determined that he died of hypothermia.

Deputy Muallim District Police Chief Deputy Supt Suhaimi Muhamad said the police have recorded statements from eight individuals involved in the expedition

"There are still three more climbers whose statements have not been recorded and will be summoned in the near future to complete the investigation.

"It is understood that the three other climbers returned home immediately after arriving at the foot of the mountain due to work and leave," he told Bernama on Sunday, 19 October.

Mustaqqeem's family is now urging the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death

According to Sinar Harian, his mother, Rohani Saad, 65, said that while the family accepts his passing, they remain dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding the death of her eldest of three children.

"I was told that Mustaqqeem's hiking friends said they searched for him for more than six hours but couldn't find him. Yet, when the Fire and Rescue Department went up to search, they found him within three hours at the mountain's peak — and they said he had been there (at the peak) all along.

"We're not questioning his death — we accept that it was God's will — but what we can't accept is why they (his friends) left him up there and didn't make a police report or inform the fire department," she said on Saturday, 18 October.

Mustaqqeem's younger brother, Muzammeer Mansor, 33, said his late brother, who worked as an IT executive, was very active in sports and had started mountain climbing earlier this year.

He said Mustaqqeem had successfully summited at least five mountains in Malaysia, as he was planning to conquer the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal.

Muzammeer added that Mustaqqeem had been married to Nur Faratin for about five years, and the couple do not have any children.
