PRICIER TICKETS FOR FIREWORKS, THEME PARKS TEST SUMMER HOLIDAYMAKERS - TOKYO JAPAN

PRICIER TICKETS FOR FIREWORKS, THEME PARKS TEST SUMMER HOLIDAYMAKERS - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

The scorching summer heat may be forcing some holiday goers to rethink their vacation plans, but leisure businesses have shown no hesitation in raising ticket prices for those seeking assurance of quality time.

About 80 percent of the 106 fireworks festivals surveyed in Japan offer paid seats this year, with the average "premium" ticket fee, which promises nice viewing and seating along with other luxury features, jumping 7.2 percent from a year earlier to 36,193 yen per seat, with some over 50,000 yen, according to research firm Teikoku Databank.

That compares with the average 5,227 yen for a regular reserved seat, up 1.8 percent from a year ago, meaning that premium seating costs about seven times more than regular seating, the biggest difference since 2019 when comparable data became available.

The highest-priced ticket in the survey was 120,000 yen for a table of four, or 30,000 yen per person for about an hour-long event.

The increases reflect the broader trend of inflation in Japan, partly because more organizers are passing on running costs, such as those for pricier fireworks and the hiring of security staff.

The trend can also indicate how people choose to spend money. Some surveys point to spending patterns more "polarized," with people willing to pay more for leisure activities or experiences while remaining frugal when buying daily necessities.

Leisure facilities are also hiking ticket prices, adopting dynamic-pricing, a strategy in which prices fluctuate according to demand. In a high season, for instance, prices may go up to maximize profits.

Entry tickets for amusement and theme parks, zoos and aquariums in Japan rose 4.2 percent from a year earlier to an average 1,695 yen. On average, unlimited passes to amusement and theme parks marked the biggest increase of 5.4 percent over the year to 4,846 yen, according to a separate survey by Teikoku Databank.

Among one-day passes, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka sells the priciest at 11,900 yen.

Rising ticket fees can still risk scaring some potential visitors away when wage growth is canceled out by inflation.

The operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, one of the most popular entertainment facilities, has said it is considering a review of ticket prices. At present, one-day ticket prices fluctuate depending on the day and season, ranging from 7,900 yen to 10,900 yen per adult.

JAPAN'S OLDEST PERSON IS A 114-YEAR-OLD RETIRED DOCTOR WHO CARRIED AN OLYMPIC TORCH IN YEAR 2021 - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Shigeko Kagawa, a 114-year-old retired physician from Nara Prefecture, has became Japan’s oldest living person, following the death of 114-year-old Miyoko Hiroyasu, according to Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Kagawa, a symbol of Japan’s extraordinary longevity, graduated from medical school before World War II, served at a hospital in Osaka during the war, and later ran her family’s clinic as an obstetrician and gynecologist. She retired at 86.

At 109, Kagawa became one of the oldest torchbearers in Olympic history during the Tokyo 2021 torch relay.

“I don’t have any,” Kagawa told TOS News in 2023 when asked about the secret to her longevity. “I just play every day. My energy is my greatest asset. I go where I want, eat what I want and do what I want. I’m free and independent.”

Her predecessor as Japan's oldest person led a similarly active life. Born in 1911, Hiroyasu studied art in Tokyo, taught in Hiroshima Prefecture and raised three children.

She died in a nursing home in Oita Prefecture, where she spent her days reading newspapers, sketching and playing card games.

“I am grateful to be healthy,” she said on her 113th birthday.

Despite an overall population decline, Japan’s elderly population continues to grow. As of September 1, 2024, a record 36 million people — 29% of the population — were aged 65 or older, the highest proportion of seniors in the world. Those aged 80 and above now make up 10% of the population, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

There are 95,119 centenarians across the country.

DOZENS DEAD IN VIETNAM AFTER HA LONG BAY TOURIST FERRY SINKS - HALONG BAY HANOI, VIETNAM

DOZENS DEAD IN VIETNAM AFTER HA LONG BAY TOURIST FERRY SINKS - HALONG BAY HANOI, VIETNAM

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

HALONG BAY, Vietnam (July 20, 2025): Rescuers searched desperately Sunday for four people still missing after at least 35 were killed when a boat capsized at one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations.

The tourist boat ferrying families around Vietnam’s famed Ha Long Bay was lashed by a sudden storm Saturday in one of the deadliest disasters at the UNESCO World Heritage site.

The vessel “Wonder Sea” was carrying 46 passengers and three crew when it capsized because of sudden heavy rain, according to a provincial police report seen by AFP.

Previous state media reports had said that 53 people were on board and 37 people had died, but the figures were later revised by police.

Tran Trong Hung, a resident in the Ha Long Bay area, told AFP: “The sky turned dark.”

There were “hailstones as big as toes with torrential rain, thunderstorms and lightning”, he said.

Most of those on board were families visiting from the capital, Hanoi, with more than 20 children among the passengers, state media outlet VNExpress said.

35 bodies had been recovered and 10 people rescued by Sunday, police said, with four people still missing.

One of the rescued, a 10-year-old boy, told state media outlet VietnamNet: “I took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived then swam up, I even shouted for help, then I was pulled up by a boat with soldiers on”.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent his condolences on Saturday to relatives of those killed and called on the defence and public security ministries to conduct urgent search and rescue.

Authorities would “investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations”, a government statement said.

Torrential rain also lashed northern Hanoi, Thai Nguyen and Bac Ninh provinces on Saturday.

Several trees were knocked down in the capital by strong winds.

The storm followed three days of intense heat, with the mercury hitting 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas.

Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, was quoted in VNExpress as saying that the thunderstorms in northern Vietnam were not caused by the influence of Tropical Storm Wipha in the South China Sea.

Wipha entered the South China Sea on Sunday gaining strength, and is on course to make landfall in Vietnam early next week.

Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations, with millions of people visiting its blue-green waters and rainforest-topped limestone islands each year.

Last year, 30 vessels sank at boat lock areas in coastal Quang Ninh province along Ha Long Bay after Typhoon Yagi brought strong wind and waves.

And this month, a ferry sank off the popular Indonesian resort island of Bali, killing at least 18 people.

5.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES FIJI, TREMORS FELT ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA

5.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES FIJI, TREMORS FELT ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

"A remarkable 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Fiji Islands Region on Thursday, 8,930 kilometres off Thailand, according to the Earthquake Observation Division."

Meanwhile, several tremors were reported in Thailand’s neighbouring countries, including three in Myanmar, two in the Nicobar Islands in India, and one in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The tremors recorded since the early hours of Thursday ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.9.

Among them, at 7.40 am, a 4.9 magnitude tremor hit Myanmar, around 18 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface. The epicentre was located approximately 314 km northwest of Pang Mapha district, Mae Hong Son province, Thailand.

Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, recorded the a magnitude of 4.5, at 7.43am. It occurred at a depth of around 80 kilometres, with the epicentre located approximately 490 km southwest of Mueang district, Phuket province.

A 4.1 magnitude tremor hit the Nicobar Islands, India, at 4.42am. The tremor originated about 10 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, with the epicentre located approximately 478 km northeast of Mueang district, Phang Nga province.

Earthquake swarm shakes Nicobar Islands, India, nearly 100 times

The Department of Mineral Resources has summarised the series of earthquakes that occurred from June 24 to July 1, 2025. A total of 94 earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 3.4 to 4.9, were recorded in the Andaman Sea, to the east of the Nicobar Islands, India.

The earthquakes were classified as minor to light, with no significant main shocks, and they occurred as part of a swarm over a specific period. The epicentres of these quakes were located about 450 kilometres northwest of Mueang district, Phang Nga province, and approximately 100 kilometres from an underwater volcano.

The department stated that the cause of these earthquakes was due to the movement along the Sumatran fault in the Andaman Sea. However, the department confirmed that these events did not trigger a tsunami due to the relatively small size of the tremors.

No impact has been reported in Thailand, and crucially, these quakes were caused by horizontal fault movement, not the subduction-type movements that lead to tsunamis, as seen in the 2004 disaster, the department explained.

The Department of Mineral Resources continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates.

MOUNT FUJI CLIMBING SEASON STARTS WITH YEN 4,000 FEE - KOFU JAPAN

MOUNT FUJI CLIMBING SEASON STARTS WITH YEN 4,000 FEE - KOFU JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Mount Fuji's climbing season commenced as the most popular trail opened Tuesday, with local authorities charging a doubled fee of 4,000 yen to ease overcrowding and the impact on the environment.

Yamanashi Prefecture is accepting a maximum of 4,000 hikers per day on the Yoshida Trail, the most commonly used route to the summit of the 3,776-meter mountain, that is scheduled to remain open through Sept. 10.

"I made it just in time to see the sun come up. I'm very happy. I want to climb mountains in other countries, too," said Shiho Miyaoka, a high school student from Kyoto who came to Japan's highest peak with her parents to see the sunrise.

The prefecture has tightened measures amid a rise in foreign visitors and growing concern about the many ill-prepared hikers seen on the mountain in recent years.

Those without an overnight reservation for a mountain hut will be prevented from passing through a gate at the 5th station from 2 p.m., two hours earlier than last year, to 3 a.m.

People planning to use the Yoshida Trail must also agree when making an online reservation to terms set by the local government, including the use of warm clothing and appropriate footwear.

Local government officials acting as "Mount Fuji rangers" at the gate will provide safety guidance. Starting from this season, they can bar entry to lightly dressed visitors.

The three other trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side of the mountain are scheduled to open on July 10, with the local government also charging a 4,000 yen fee but without an upper limit for the number of hikers.

Mt. Fuji, designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year during its official climbing season through September.

FAN BID TEARY FAREWELL TO 4 GIANT PANDAS AT ZOO BEFORE THEIR RETURN TO CHINA - SHIRAHAMA, WAKAHAMA

FAN BID TEARY FAREWELL TO 4 GIANT PANDAS AT ZOO BEFORE THEIR RETURN TO CHINA - SHIRAHAMA, WAKAHAMA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Thousands of fans bid a teary farewell Friday to a family of four giant pandas at a zoo in Japan’s coastal town of Shirahama as the animals made their last public appearance before their return to China.

Around 3,000 visitors flocked to the Adventure World theme park to get a last glimpse of the beloved animals. Many rushed straight to the panda exhibit zone, calling out the names of their favorites.

Although the 24-year-old mother Rauhin and her three daughters — Yuihin, Saihin and Fuhin — were all born and raised at the park, they remain on loan from China and must now be returned.

Once they return to China, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo will be the only pandas left in Japan.

More than 1,000 people, many wearing panda-themed attire, queued outside the entrance of the theme park hours before it opened while some camped outside the night before.

Some people wiped off tears while viewing throwback images of the pandas when they were cubs.

Yoshihiko Fukuzumi recalls the arrival of the first two pandas at the park 30 years ago and has watch their family grow. Since retiring three years ago, he and his wife have visited them nearly everyweek. “To us, they are like our grandchildren."

Giant pandas are native to southwestern China and serve as an unofficial national mascot. Beijing lends them to other countries as a sign of goodwill but maintains ownership over them and any cubs they produce.

Born in 2000, Rauhin had seven other cubs with Eimei, a male panda sent from China in 1994. Eimei returned home two years ago and has since died.

Despite strained political ties between Japan and China, giant pandas are hugely popular in Japan.

“We feel comforted just by looking at pandas,” said zoo director Koji Imazu.

Imazu said the departure of the four pandas marks the end of the zoo's 30-year joint project with China. He thanked Chinese specialists for sharing their expertise with the Japanese staff and said the zoo will be ready for a new arrival at any time.

“Of course we all miss them, but I hope you could send them off with a cheerful wave and wish them well in China,” Imazu said.

In Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said giant pandas are “friendly ambassadors" conveying the goodwill of the Chinese people.

Guo said that China and Japan have collaborated on panda conservation and research since 2000, and that China is ready to further strengthen international cooperation, including with Japan.

Rauhin and her daughters will be flown to China on Saturday where they will join other pandas at a facility in Sichuan province near their original habitat. There, the three young ones will find partners.

“I still can't believe they're all leaving,” said Junko Ikeda, a Fuhin fan from neighboring Nara prefecture who spent Thursday night in her camper van for the send-off. "I hope she finds a partner, becomes a mother and lives a happy life.”

BANGKOK GEARS UP FOR THAILAND'S LARGEST EVER PRIDE PARADE - 2025

BANGKOK GEARS UP FOR THAILAND'S LARGEST EVER PRIDE PARADE - 2025

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

(May 28, 2025) – Bangkok is set to host its biggest ever Pride Parade on June 1st, 2025, transforming the heart of the capital into a vibrant display of diversity.

The event, held under the theme "Born This Way," aims to solidify Bangkok's position as a metropolis of inclusivity, fostering a city where everyone feels at home.

Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), announced details of the Bangkok Pride Parade 2025 on Wednesday.

Organised by the Thai government in collaboration with Bangkok Pride, the BMA, and a network of partners, the parade will kick off at 2:00 PM and run until 6:00 PM.

The procession will begin at the National Stadium (Supachalasai Stadium), winding its way through prominent city landmarks including the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Siam Discovery, Siam Centre, Siam Paragon, and Wat Pathum Wanaram, before concluding at Ratchaprasong Intersection, in front of CentralWorld. The route spans approximately three kilometres.

This year's "Born This Way" theme will be brought to life through five distinct parade sections, each represented by a different colour and concept:

  • Red: "Born to be Loved," celebrating love and the recent strides in marriage equality.
  • Purple: "Born to be Me," promoting self-love and individual pride.
  • Green: "Born to be Part of One," reflecting the interconnectedness of humanity with the environment, society, and the wider world.
  • Yellow: "Born to Create & Inspire," showcasing the rich artistry and cultural contributions of the LGBTQIAN+ community.
  • Blue: "Born to Heal Generations," focusing on healing and equitable access to healthcare services.

A highlight of this year's parade will be the unveiling of a rainbow flag stretching over 200 metres, a first for Thailand and indeed for the world.

"The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration firmly believes that the core of a livable city lies in every individual feeling that they have equal space, rights, and dignity within society," stated the BMA spokesperson. "Pride is not merely a celebration; it is an affirmation of our respect for every identity and our commitment to genuinely building an open metropolis for all."

Beyond the parade, a series of complementary events are planned. The Bangkok Pride Forum will offer a platform for discussions and exchanges on LGBTQIAN+ well-being, the "rainbow economy," technology, environmental issues, human rights, and education. This forum will take place over three days, from May 30th to June 1st, 2025.

Additionally, the Bangkok Pride Awards will be held on May 31st, 2025. This ceremony will recognise individuals and organisations that have played crucial roles in advocating for gender diversity rights and equality. Further details on these events are available on the Bangkok Pride social media page.
