JUDGE ORDERS EX-INTERPRETER FOR SHOHEI OHTANI TO GET GAMBLING ADDICTION TREATMENT

JUDGE ORDERS EX-INTERPRETER FOR SHOHEI OHTANI TO GET GAMBLING ADDICTION TREATMENT

@Jackie San

The former longtime interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani agreed on Friday to undergo court-ordered gambling addiction treatment after federal prosecutors accused him of stealing $16 million from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts.

Ippei Mizuhara 's initial appearance in federal court marked the first time the interpreter has been seen in public since the scandal exploded last month.

Fom the field at Dodgers Stadium hours after Friday's proceeding, Ohtani said he was “very grateful” for the investigation and would focus on baseball going forward.

Mizuhara exploited his personal and professional relationship with Ohtani to plunder millions from the two-way player’s account for years, at times impersonating Ohtani to bankers, prosecutors said.

He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of one count of bank fraud.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria A. Audero ordered Mizuhara to seek the treatment as a condition of his bond in the sports betting case. Michael G. Freedman, the interpreter's attorney, said his client had planned to do so anyway.

While he is best known as Ohtani’s voice in ballparks across the country, Mizuhara only spoke on Friday to answer the judge’s questions, saying “yes” when Audero asked if he understood several parts of the case.

Mizuhara hopes to “reach an agreement with the government to resolve this case as quickly as possible so that he can take responsibility," Freedman said in a statement issued after the hearing ended.

He added that his client “wishes to apologize to Mr. Ohtani, the Dodgers, Major League Baseball, and his family.”

A criminal complaint filed Thursday detailed the alleged scheme through evidence that included text messages, financial records and recordings of phone calls. Mizuhara’s winning bets totaled over $142 million, which he deposited in his own bank account and not Ohtani’s. But his losing bets were around $183 million, a net loss of nearly $41 million. He did not wager on baseball.

Other bond conditions stipulate Mizuhara cannot gamble, either electronically or in-person, go inside any gambling establishments or associate with any known bookmakers.

Mizuhara was released after the hearing on an unsecured $25,000 bond, colloquially known as a signature bond, meaning he did not have to put up any cash or collateral to be freed. If he violates the bond conditions, he will be on the hook for $25,000.

The judge noted his family ties and longtime residency in the Los Angeles area and self-surrender Friday morning when she approved the bond. She also mentioned that he did not have a criminal record.

While Ohtani's name was never mentioned during the hearing, his presence loomed large over the roughly 10-minute proceeding inside a courtroom packed with press, much of it Japanese media. The judge and prosecutor only briefly referenced the baseball star as “the victim.”

But hours later, Ohtani spoke to the Los Angeles Times ahead of the team’s game against the San Diego Padres about the controversy, saying he very grateful for the Department of Justice’s investigation.”

“For me personally, this marks a break from this, and I’d like to focus on baseball,” he told the newspaper through a new interpreter.

There was no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling, and the player is cooperating with investigators, authorities said.

MLB rules prohibit players and team employees from wagering on baseball, even legally. MLB also bans betting on other sports with illegal or offshore bookmakers.

The Los Angeles Times and ESPN broke the news of the prosecution last month, prompting the Dodgers to fire the interpreter and Major League Baseball to open its own investigation.

On Friday before the Padres game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was happy Ohtani has not been implicated in the case and everyone can move forward. He has not seen the investigation affect Ohtani or anyone else on the Dodgers, he added.

“He’s handled it with flying colors. He’s done a great job of just focusing on playing baseball and not letting it be a distraction for him,” Roberts said. “Our guys, as well, have handled it really well as far as that noise and not letting it affect play.

“I think for us, we’ve already moved past it, to be quite honest with you. He addressed us earlier, we felt good about it and supported him. Nothing has changed," Roberts said.

Ohtani proved Roberts to be correct during his first at-bat on Friday when he homered to center field.

FY2022 GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS HIT RECORD LOW - JAPAN

FY2022 GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS HIT RECORD LOW - JAPAN

@Jackie San

TOKYOJapan's greenhouse gas emissions fell to a record low in fiscal 2022 on the back of reduced steel production and energy-saving efforts by households, government data showed Friday.

National emissions in the year through March 2023 totaled 1.14 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, down 2.5 percent from fiscal 2021 and the lowest level since comparable data became available in fiscal 1990.

The decline came after emissions increased in fiscal 2021 for the first time in eight years, reflecting rising energy consumption amid a pickup in economic activity following the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Environment Ministry.

When greenhouse gas absorption by forests is subtracted from total emissions, the figure amounted to 1.09 billion tons, a decrease of 22.9 percent from the level in fiscal 2013, which Japan uses as a base year.

But emissions remained far from the government's target of a 46 percent reduction by fiscal 2030.

"The entire government will work to promote measures," Environment Minister Shintaro Ito told a news conference, while admitting it will not be easy to attain the target.

In fiscal 2022, the industrial sector cut energy-related CO2 emissions by 5.3 percent from the previous year, while such emissions climbed 3.9 percent in the transportation sector, due likely to increased tourism amid the economic recovery following the pandemic.

Household emissions fell 1.4 percent on the back of lower heating demand amid warmer temperatures compared with the previous year.

The government calculated emissions absorption by coastal seaweed and seagrass for the first time at 350,000 tons, but it did not include the data as the validity of its calculation method had not been examined by a United Nations agency.

PILOT SPOKE TO PARENTS AN HOUR BEFORE THE ACCIDENT : MALAYSIA HELICOPTER CRASH

PILOT SPOKE TO PARENTS AN HOUR BEFORE THE ACCIDENT : MALAYSIA HELICOPTER CRASH

@Jackie San

GEORGE TOWN – The parents of Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Commander Firdaus Ramli had just chatted with him over the phone barely an hour before his tragic death on April 23.

The sister of Mr Firdaus, Ms Alya Ramli, 27, said: “This cannot have happened. I can’t believe my brother is gone. Just (in the morning on April 23), I heard my parents talking to him over the phone.

“About an hour later, we got the distressing news about his death.”

Mr Firdaus, 44, was the pilot of one of the helicopters which crashed in Lumut, Perak.

Ms Alya said her brother would always call their parents before he went off on a flight or mission.

The family got together recently during Hari Raya when they went to Lumut to celebrate the occasion with him.

“That was the last time I saw him,” she said in between being in tears at their residence in Pantai Jerejak, Penang.

About a dozen reporters went to the double-storey house, which was quiet with all its doors shut except when a relative emerged to collect food from a delivery man.

Ms Alya, who came out to speak to reporters briefly, declined to have her picture taken. She said that news of her brother’s death was relayed by his wife, who is based in Sabah, at about 10am then.

“My parents have left for the RMN base in Lumut to obtain more information and complete the process of bringing my brother’s remains home,” she said.

One of Mr Firdaus’ relatives, who wanted to be known only as Ms Syahirah, said the deceased had been with the navy for over 20 years.

“He was based in Kota Kinabalu since two years ago,” she said.

Mr Firdaus was among 10 crew members who died after two naval helicopters collided during training at the navy base stadium in Lumut.

It is understood that he was the pilot of the HOM M503-3 helicopter with seven crew members on board.

The aircraft belonged to Squadron 503 which is based in Kota Kinabalu. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK.

10 DEAD AS NAVY HELICOPTERS COLLIDE MID-AIR IN LUMUT PERAK MALAYSIA

10 DEAD AS NAVY HELICOPTERS COLLIDE MID-AIR IN LUMUT PERAK MALAYSIA

@Jackie San

Two Malaysian navy helicopters collided in mid-air as they flew in formation during a rehearsal for a military parade, killing all 10 crew on board.

One of the aircraft clipped the rotor of the other before the two crashed into the ground, footage published on local media showed.

The incident took place at 09:30 local time (02:30 BST) in the Malaysian town of Lumut, which is home to a Royal Malaysian Navy base.

There are no known survivors.

"All victims were confirmed dead on site and the remains were sent to the [Lumut] Military Hospital for identification," said the Royal Malaysian Navy.

It added that it would form a committee to investigate the cause of the incident.

One of the helicopters, a HOM M503-3 with seven people on board, is believed to have crashed onto a running track.

The other, a Fennec M502-6 carrying the other three victims, crashed into a swimming pool nearby.

The state's fire and rescue department said it was alerted to the incident at 09:50 local time (01:50 GMT).

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that "the nation mourns the heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching tragedy".

"Condolences to all the families of the victims and prayers for strength to face this calamity," he said.

In March, a Malaysian coast guard helicopter crashed into the sea off Malaysia's Angsa Island during a training flight.

The pilot, co-pilot and two passengers on board were found and rescued by fishermen.

WHY JAPAN COUNTRY HAS MANY FESTIVALS ?

WHY JAPAN COUNTRY HAS MANY FESTIVALS ?

@Jackie San

EXPERIENCE JAPANESE FESTIVALS WITH HISTORY

In the past, the celebrations served as either thanksgiving to the gods for prosperity, or a request to them for a bountiful harvest or to ward away natural disasters. Today, Japan's festivals enable visitors to witness ancient rituals, performances and lively participation by local residents.

WHAT THE PURPOSE OF JAPAN FESTIVALS?

Traditionally Japanese people have long believed that there are eight million gods that reside in everything. Matsuri are held to express gratitude to nature and the gods, to enjoy life, and to foster community.

WHAT MAKES JAPANESE FESTIVAL UNIQUE?

Everyone who goes to a festival in Japan has a unique and unforgettable experience, from the lively music and colourful costumes to the delicious street food and bright fireworks. Festivals are a big part of Japan's cultural history and are a big part of how Japanese people live their lives every day.

WHAT HAPPEN AT A JAPANESE SCHOOL WHEN FESTIVAL HAPPENS?

In many cases it is held over two days in the fall. Dances, plays and band performances are held on the stage, and booths selling light snacks and sweets, and study exhibitions are set up in classrooms.

WHAT IS JAPANESE FESTIVAL CLOTHING CALLED?

Formerly the most common Japanese garment, the kimono has fallen out of favor and is rarely worn as everyday dress now. They are most often seen at summer festivals, where people frequently wear the yukata, the most informal type of kimono.

WHEN ATTEND JAPANESE FESTIVALS WHAT NEED TO WEAR?

A common summer festival scene in Japan is people wearing yukatas (summer kimonos) with masks. You can find masks of all types including popular anime characters sold at the vendors of most festivals. It also makes for a good souvenir to bring back home the memories of the matsuri.

3 PEOPLE WHOSE DEATHS LINKED TO DIETARY SUPPLEMENT INTAKE HAD PRIOR HEALTH ISSUES IN JAPAN

3 PEOPLE WHOSE DEATHS LINKED TO DIETARY SUPPLEMENT INTAKE HAD PRIOR HEALTH ISSUES IN JAPAN

@Jackie San

Three of the five people reported by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co to have died after taking its red yeast rice dietary supplements had preexisting medical conditions such as prostate cancer and malignant lymphoma, Japan's health ministry said Tuesday.

Three women and two men -- three in their 70s, one in their 90s, and one whose age is unknown -- have so far been reported to have died after consuming the Osaka-based drugmaker's products containing "beni-koji" red yeast rice.

Health issues among three of the deceased also included hypertension, hyperlipidemia and rheumatism, while the medical history of the remaining two are unknown, the ministry said at a joint press conference with the Japanese Society of Nephrology.

The number of people who have been hospitalized at one point after taking the company's supplements stood at 216 as of Monday, with 1,251 having visited a medical institution. The number of inquiries to the firm has reached about 59,000.

A recent study by the society found that a quarter of 95 patients who suffered kidney disorders after taking the supplements were given steroids, while the rest were only told to discontinue consumption.

Of the three patients that required dialysis, two have stopped the treatment, with the one still continuing it deemed unlikely to be doing so for reasons related to the supplement intake.

The majority of patients who developed health issues after consuming the supplements went to the hospital last December or later, the study showed. Symptoms included fatigue, loss of appetite, urine abnormalities and abdominal discomfort. Frequent urination and edema were relatively rare.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical rolled out "beni-koji choleste help" in February 2021, selling around 1 million packages by the end of February this year. The supplements were marketed as a way to lower levels of LDL cholesterol, the so-called bad cholesterol.

While investigations into the cause continue, the company recently said it detected puberulic acid, a natural compound made from blue mold, in the ingredients used to manufacture the supplements and that the rogue substance may be the cause of the illnesses.

"People tend to recover after stopping intake (of the supplement). But there have been cases of kidney disease even without symptoms, so please get a check-up if you feel unwell," the society's President Masaomi Nangaku said.
