'WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS', AS SARAWAK TOPS SUKMA 2024 TABLE WITH 76 GOLDS - ABDUL KARIM SAYS
'WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS', AS SARAWAK TOPS SUKMA 2024 TABLE WITH 76 GOLDS - ABDUL KARIM SAYS
KUCHING (AUGUST, 24): Sarawak has emerged victorious in its Sukma XXI campaign as the overall champion with 76 gold medals.
This was confirmed by Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who posted on Facebook: “Kita juara (We are the champions).”
When contacted by The Borneo Post later, he said: “We are finally the Champion… after 30 years of waiting!!!”
Sarawak clinched its 76th gold medal through Cassandra Lavigne Shelden’s floor exercise win in artistic gymnastics at the Serian Convention Centre today.
This triumph ended Sarawak’s 30-year-wait for overall championship and marked its fourth time securing the title in the biennial Games.
In addition to the gold medals, Sarawak earned 54 silver and 69 bronze medals after 14 days of intense competition.
This year’s Games also saw Sarawak athletes set five new Sukma records, including Jonah Chang Rigan in Men’s Shot Put, Liew Yu Jie in Men’s Recurve 70 meter, Joey Tan Xing Lei in Women’s Recurve 70 meter, Ng Jing Xuan in Women’s Javelin Throw, and Puong Wei Hii in Men’s 200m Backstroke.
First held in 1986, Sukma was hosted in Sarawak in 1990 and 2016.
Sarawak emerged as the overall champion in the 1990 edition, and in 2016, it was just two gold medals short of defending the title.
This year, Sarawak has managed to reclaim its former glory and the elusive overall Sukma crown, a title they last held 30 years ago in 1994, following their previous victories in 1990 and 1992.

MARKS 79TH ANNIVERSARY OF END OF WORLD WAR II - JAPAN
MARKS 79TH ANNIVERSARY OF END OF WORLD WAR II - JAPAN
TOKYO
Japan marked on Thursday the 79th anniversary of its surrender in World War II, with a memorial to mourn the war dead held without COVID-related restrictions for the first time in five years.
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, along with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and 4,023 people related to those killed attended the government-sponsored ceremony to mourn the roughly 3.1 million Japanese military personnel and civilians who died in the war.
Participants observed a moment of silence at noon as part of the ceremony which took place without a limit on the number of attendees and allowed the singing of the national anthem with the lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions.
Kishida, who will step down as prime minister after announcing he will not run in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party presidential race in September, participated in the event for the third time and delivered a speech. A moment of silence was observed at noon.
In his speech, Kishida did not mention Japan's wartime aggression in Asia, following the precedent set by his immediate predecessors, Yoshihide Suga and Shinzo Abe.
Instead, the prime minister emphasized efforts to maintain a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
"We will make our utmost efforts to address challenges facing the world," he said.
Before Abe, who took the prime minister's post for the second time in 2012, Japanese leaders had consistently mentioned the country's aggression and expressed remorse at the ceremony.
Emperor Naruhito expressed his "deep remorse," during the annual memorial service, as he did last year.
"Reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never again be repeated," the emperor said at the ceremony.
Mitsuru Anzai, an 86-year-old representative of relatives of the war dead, made an appeal for peace in his speech, saying, "With conflicts continuing around the world, I pray that peace will be achieved as soon as possible." Anzai's father died in China during the war.
Among participants, the eldest was 97-year-old Shoji Nagaya while the youngest was 3-year-old Sena Sakai.
A little less than half of those in attendance were born after the war, according to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor, showing the need to preserve and pass down the lessons of the conflict as the generation who lived through it ages.
The war dead include those killed in the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

NAGOYA AND TOKYO BULLET TRAIN SERVICE TO RESUME NORMAL SCHEDULE - TOKYO JAPAN
NAGOYA AND TOKYO BULLET TRAIN SERVICE TO RESUME NORMAL SCHEDULE - TOKYO JAPAN
Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya resumed normally from the first runs Saturday, the operator said, following a suspension due to the approach of a powerful typhoon.
JR Central Railway also said it will run extra trains between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka on its Tokaido Shinkansen Line in the morning, apparently to cope with the high volume of passengers at the end of the Bon summer holidays in Japan.
The company canceled all bullet trains between Tokyo and Nagoya, one of the busiest sections of the country's high-speed train services, on Friday due to concerns about heavy rains and strong winds caused by Typhoon Ampil.

TYPOON MOVES AWAY FROM JAPAN AS TRAIN SERVICES NOW RESUME AND NO MAJOR DAMAGE WAS REPORTED - JAPAN
TYPOON MOVES AWAY FROM JAPAN AS TRAIN SERVICES NOW RESUME AND NO MAJOR DAMAGE WAS REPORTED - JAPAN
TOKYO
A powerful typhoon that slammed the Tokyo area with heavy rains and brought mudslide warnings in northern Japan headed eastward out into the Pacific Ocean away from the coast Saturday.
There were no reports of major damage. Tokyo and nearby areas were back to normal under sunny skies. Bullet trains that cancelled services between Tokyo and Nagoya, stranding thousands of passengers, resumed operations with the first morning train.
Some local trains were still delayed, however, and dozens of airline flights remained cancelled.
Typhoon Ampil was moving away from Japan’s eastern coast at 20 kph, with sustained winds of 162 kph, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Ampil did not make landfall and reached closest to Japan after midnight.
The transportation disruptions came when Japan was observing the Bon summer holidays.
Power that went out in more than 5,000 households was back, except for about 250 homes in Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures, northeast of Tokyo, according to the utility company.
The typhoon left signboards, trees, bicycles and poles toppled. Some beaches were still off limits to swimmers because of rough seas and strong winds.
The evacuation order for more than 320,000 residents of the city of Iwaki in Fukushima prefecture was lifted. Tokyo’s Disneyland, which closed early on Friday, was back in business at the regular hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Yamato Transport, which makes Amazon and other deliveries in Japan, said the halted deliveries in the Tokyo area were back but delayed, while some deliveries were temporarily discontinued in northern Japan.
Caution was advised about fragile buildings that could collapse as well as landslides. Heavy rains and thunder still threatened northern Japan.
Weather forecasters turned to warning people of extremely hot temperatures, which often follow storms, reaching as high as 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Tokyo area, and advised people to take plenty of fluids.

PARENTS OF BOY WHO KILLED HIMSELF SUE 11 CLASSMATE, CITY FOR DAMAGES - OSAKA JAPAN
PARENTS OF BOY WHO KILLED HIMSELF SUE 11 CLASSMATE, CITY FOR DAMAGES - OSAKA JAPAN
OSAKA
The parents of a third-year junior high school boy who committed suicide in February 2023, after being bullied in Kadoma City, Osaka Prefecture, have filed a suit against his classmates and the city seeking damages.
According to the suit filed on Monday, the 15-year-old boy took his own life at home after being subjected to slanderous comments from several classmates on Instagram and the Line messaging app, TV Asahi reported. He had been repeatedly bullied since his first year in the basketball club, and had been ignored by classmates who would post comments such as "Go die.” It is also believed that he had developed an adjustment disorder just before his death.
The parents have filed suit against 11 classmates and Kadoma City, claiming that the school and their son's homeroom teacher did not take any action against the bullying.
The boy’s mother said at a news conference on Monday: ”Bullying is a crime, and the actions of the students who committed this crime were extremely despicable and showed no sense of shame. We, the family members, and my son's friends will never forgive those who committed the crime."
A council set up by Kadoma City's Board of Education investigated the case, and in December last year determined that 62 incidents, including Line and Instagram posts, constituted bullying.

JAPAN TO ALLOW JOINT CUSTODY OF CHILDREN AFTER DIVORSE
JAPAN TO ALLOW JOINT CUSTODY OF CHILDREN AFTER DIVORSE
TOKYO
In May, it was decided that Japan will introduce the right to joint parental custody by the year 2026 as an option in the case of divorce. This reform marks a huge legal shift after 77 years of a sole parental custody system following divorce in the country, and was spurred on by several factors which include:
● Encouraging both parents to take responsibility for child-rearing expenses through joint custody, which addresses an ongoing issue of single-parent households not being able to receive adequate child support payments.
● Increasing the face-to-face interactions of children and their parents through visitation rights, which is thought to be beneficial for both sides.
● Conforming to international standards, where joint custody tends to be the norm, though the details vary from country to country. Also, in accordance with the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption, a joint custody system can help prevent child abduction cases with the dissolution of international marriages.
▼ The question facing divorcing parents in Japan soon: Should we seek joint custody, or should one of us have sole custody of the kids?
Of course, the reform does not come without concerns from lawmakers. Namely, opponents of the change worry that there will be an increased risk of continued domestic violence or child abuse in cases of divorce due to these factors. Others have cited an increased burden on both children and the courts if there is a rise in the number of lawsuits regarding enforcement of joint custody situations. What is clear is that in order for joint custody to be as effective as possible in Japan, the government will have to strengthen its countermeasures against child abuse and create additional support systems to ensure smooth parental visits and payment of child support.
So what does the general public think of the upcoming right for joint parental custody? Data collection firm Navit conducted an internet survey in July among 1,000 Japanese male and female participants in their 20s-80s on differing attitudes. The major survey questions and takeaways are detailed below.
Q1: Are you aware of the right to joint custody, in which both parents have shared parental rights even after divorce?
With 73.3 percent of respondents stating that they were aware and only 26.7 percent stating that they were not aware of a joint custody system, the majority of people seem to be familiar with its existence in some places of the world as a potential option.
Q2: Did you know that joint custody will be implemented in Japan by 2026?
This time, with only 47.2 percent stating that they knew of the upcoming legal change and 52.8 percent stating that they did not know, it seems that the general population could benefit from a public awareness campaign in the near future.
Q3: Do you support or oppose joint custody?
The responses to this question were more mixed, with the highest proportion of respondents stating that they neither support nor oppose joint custody at 43.6 percent. The next biggest group were those who support it at 30.4 percent, followed by those who lean on the side of supporting it if they had to choose at 15.1 percent. The two smallest groups were those who lean on the side of opposing it if they had to choose at 6.7 percent, and finally, those who oppose it at 4.2 percent.
With the the biggest group displaying ambivalence towards the concept of joint custody, perhaps more educational programming is needed alongside awareness to also teach the public about both the potential pros and cons of this kind of system.
Q4: What do you think of joint custody?
This final question was fairly open-ended with multiple responses, but the three largest kinds by far can be summarized by the following statements:
● “I think it’s good because children can receive the love of both parents” (26.4 percent)
● “I don’t think it’s good because it has the possibility of making it harder for children to escape domestic violence or child abuse” (18.7 percent)
● “I think it’s good because it will decrease fighting over parental rights” (13.0 percent)
The reform also seems to be part of a growing trend in legal changes to support the various needs of Japanese families with children. Ultimately, it appears that there is still a long way to go in order to successfully adapt a system of joint parental custody as an option after divorce into the unique cultural context and legal framework of Japan.

SHANSHAN TYPOON BRINGS TORRENTIAL RAINS, TRAVEL TURMOIL ACROSS JAPAN COUNTRY
SHANSHAN TYPOON BRINGS TORRENTIAL RAINS, TRAVEL TURMOIL ACROSS JAPAN COUNTRY
FUKUOKA
Typhoon Shanshan deluged large parts of Japan with torrential rain on Friday, prompting warnings for flooding and landslides hundreds of miles from the storm's centre, halting travel services and shutting production at major factories.
In the southwestern region of Kyushu, where what authorities say could be one of the strongest storms ever to hit the region made landfall on Thursday, residents in Fukuoka city were hunkering down, with streets quiet and shops shuttered.
Sheltering at the entrance of a rain-lashed, deserted shopping mall near the city's train station, university student Kokoro Osoegawa, 21, was struggling to get home.
"There are no trains because of the typhoon so my parents are coming to pick me up. I stayed at a friend’s house, and then came here. I thought there would be some trains but there are none," she said. "I’ve never experienced all the trains stopping before."
At least three people have been killed and 80 injured in storm-related incidents in recent days, according to the disaster management agency.
Bringing gusts of up to 50 meters per second (180 km per hour), strong enough to blow over moving trucks, the typhoon was near the coastal city of Kunisaki in Oita Prefecture at 8:45 a.m. and moving northeast, according to authorities.
Around 125,000 households in seven prefectures were without power in Kyushu, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co.
But the warm and moist air flowing around the typhoon have also brought heavy rains in areas far from the main body, which authorities say is concerning given its slower than expected movement across the country.
Notices advising residents to be ready to evacuate have been issued to more than 4 million people across the country, mainly in the hard-hit Kyushu area but as far away as the capital Tokyo and nearby Yokohama. Authorities in Yokohama said there were risks of landslides in some areas due to heavy rain.
But, as of Thursday, only some 30,000 had been evacuated, mainly in Kyushu, disaster management minister Yoshifumi Matsumura said.
After moving from Kyushu, the storm was expected to approach the central and eastern regions, which includes Tokyo, around the weekend, the weather agency said.
Toyota suspended operations in all of its domestic plants due to the storm, while other automakers Nissan and Honda, semiconductor firms Renesas and Tokyo Electron, and electronics giant Sony also temporarily halted production at some factories.
Airlines, including ANA Holdings and Japan Airlines, have announced cancellations of hundreds of domestic and some international flights. Many ferry and rail services, including the bullet train between Tokyo and the central city of Nagoya, were suspended on Friday morning.
Lin Yue-Hua, a 60-year-old tourist from Taiwan, had her flight from Fukuoka back home cancelled on Thursday. She was told to book another flight but did not know when she could return.
"We were very worried and upset because we didn’t know what to do," she said.
"We stayed one more day in Japan. Then we saw it in the news that our flight from Taiwan couldn’t land in Japan after flying around the area for about 40 minutes and it flew back to Taiwan. So we have been busy trying to find our way home.”
Typhoon Shanshan is the latest harsh weather system to hit Japan, following Typhoon Ampil, which also led to blackouts and evacuations, earlier this month.
