HIROSHIMA MARK 80 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF ATOMIC BOMBING - HIROSHIMA JAPAN

HIROSHIMA MARK 80 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF ATOMIC BOMBING - HIROSHIMA JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Hiroshima called Wednesday for young people to take on the challenge of ridding the world of nuclear weapons and urged nations to rise above self-interest to end conflicts, as the city marked the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing amid growing global instability.

"Despite the current turmoil at the nation-state level, we, the people, must never give up," Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui said in the Peace Declaration read during the annual memorial ceremony, which took place after Japan's leading group of atomic bomb survivors was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

"Our youth, the leaders of future generations, must recognize that misguided policies regarding military spending, national security, and nuclear weapons could bring utterly inhumane consequences," he said. "We urge them to step forward with this understanding and lead civil society toward consensus."

A moment of silence was observed at 8:15 a.m., the exact time when the uranium bomb was dropped by the U.S. bomber Enola Gay and detonated over the city on Aug. 6, 1945, in the final stage of World War II, killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of the year.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said it is Japan's mission as the only country to have experienced the horror of nuclear devastation in war to advance global efforts to realize a world free of nuclear weapons, especially amid increasing divisions over disarmament.

With the 80-year milestone, a record 120 nations and regions attended the ceremony at the Peace Memorial Park, located near the hypocenter, according to the city of Hiroshima.

Following a controversy last year over whether to invite countries involved in armed conflicts to Japan's atomic bomb commemorations, which are aimed at promoting peace, Hiroshima has shifted from sending invitations to simply notifying all countries and regions of its event.

The ceremony, attended by around 55,000 people, followed the awarding of last year's Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, also known as the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, for its decades-long campaign against nuclear weapons using the testimony of survivors.

But opportunities to hear directly from those who witnessed the atomic bombings are declining, with the combined number of officially recognized survivors of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki falling below 100,000 for the first time. Their average age exceeded 86.

The momentum toward nuclear disarmament has diminished in recent years with growing global instability amid the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, and President Donald Trump's pursuit of an "America First" foreign policy and transactional approach to diplomacy.

In a dangerous escalation of Middle East tensions, the United States in June struck three sites in Iran with the stated aim of destroying its nuclear weapons infrastructure.

Matsui said policymakers in some countries believe "nuclear weapons are essential for national defense" and that the developments "flagrantly disregard the lessons the international community should have learned from the tragedies of history."

Criticizing security policies focused on "narrow self-interest" that foment international conflicts, he urged all world leaders to visit Hiroshima to witness the consequences of atomic bombs and called for nations strengthening their military forces to engage in dialogue aimed at abandoning reliance on nuclear weapons.

Matsui also reiterated the city's call for Japan to sign the U.N. treaty outlawing nuclear weapons, saying doing so would comply with the wishes of the atomic bomb survivors, including Nihon Hidankyo.

While advocating for a world without nuclear weapons, Japan has not joined the nuclear ban treaty as a complete prohibition would conflict with its policy of relying on U.S. nuclear deterrence.

Ishiba said in his speech that the Japanese government will explore specific steps both nuclear and non-nuclear states can work together on, without touching on the treaty, which none of the nuclear powers are part of.

Warning that the risk of nuclear conflict is growing, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres lamented in a statement that "the very weapons that brought such devastation to Hiroshima and Nagasaki are once again being treated as tools of coercion."

But he noted that Nihon Hidankyo's Nobel Prize win was a sign of hope, saying in the statement read out by U.N. disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu that "countries must draw strength from the resilience of Hiroshima and from the wisdom" of the survivors.

Many survivors braved the intense summer heat to offer prayers and flowers near the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, an arch-shaped monument at the park, early in the morning.

Among them was Shinobu Ono, who was just 4 years old when the bomb dropped. Her family home, nestled at the foot of a mountain, was spared from the firestorm, but her father, who had been outside at the time, suffered serious burns to his face.

Now 84, Ono said she was too young to fully grasp what happened at the time but returns every year to honor her family and pray for peace.

"I am grateful for the efforts of those who can share their stories. Since I can't contribute, all I can do is pray," she said. "When I look at what is happening in Ukraine now, it just breaks my heart."

The United States and Russia together possess around 90 percent of all nuclear weapons, while China's arsenal has grown faster than any other country's with around 100 warheads added each year since 2023, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in its latest annual report.

Three days after the first atomic bomb, nicknamed "Little Boy," decimated Hiroshima in western Japan, a second one, dubbed "Fat Man," was dropped on Nagasaki in the southwest. Japan surrendered to the Allied forces six days later, marking the end of World War II.

CHINA TELLS JAPAN NOT TO DISRUPT TAIWAN STRAIT PEACE AFTER SHIP PASSAGE - BEIJING CHINA

CHINA TELLS JAPAN NOT TO DISRUPT TAIWAN STRAIT PEACE AFTER SHIP PASSAGE - BEIJING CHINA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

China on Monday urged Japan not to disrupt peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait following revelations over the weekend that a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer sailed through the area in February.

"We firmly oppose any country's act of provocation under the pretext of freedom of navigation that threatens China's sovereignty and security," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference, demanding that Tokyo "act prudently on the Taiwan question."

In a challenge to China's military assertiveness in the area, the destroyer Akizuki navigated the waterway between China and Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing, after taking part in a joint drill on Feb. 5 with U.S., Australian and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea, a Japanese government source said.

The vessel's passage through the strait came after MSDF destroyer Sazanami sailed in the narrow sea channel along with Australian and New Zealand vessels in September, the first known such navigation by a Japanese defense ship.

22-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ARRESTED FOR LEAVING NEWBORN BABY GIRL TO DIE IN CAR - GIFU PREFECTURE TOKYO JAPAN

22-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ARRESTED FOR LEAVING NEWBORN BABY GIRL TO DIE IN CAR - GIFU PREFECTURE TOKYO JAPAN

@Jackie San

Police in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, have arrested a 22-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning the corpse of her newborn daughter in a car where she died in February.

According to police, Momoka Yamaguchi, a company employee, gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of a relative's house between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Feb 16, NHK reported. She left the infant in her car where she died at around 3 a.m. the next day. Yamaguchi’s mother called police after her daughter told her about the baby.

Police said an autopsy showed the cause of death to be respiratory failure.

Police said Yamaguchi, who was arrested on Friday, told them the child’s father was a man she had previously been in a relationship with, and she found out she was pregnant after they broke up.

Yamaguchi's mother was quoted by NHK as saying that none of the family knew she was pregnant. Yamaguchi lived with her parents and five siblings, and had not complained of any changes in her health such as morning sickness. She continued to work as usual.

Police said Yamaguchi told them that after giving birth, she put the baby in her car and wanted to take him to a hospital, but didn't know where to go.

North Korea has notified Japan of its plan to launch a rocket carrying a space satellite toward the Yellow Sea and east of Luzon Island between May 27 and June 4, the Japan Coast Guard said on Monday.

The notice comes ahead of a trilateral summit meeting between Japan, South Korea and China scheduled to take place later on Monday.

Officials from the United States, Japan, and South Korea held phone talks in response to the notice and shared a view that North Korea's satellite launch using ballistic missile technology would be in violation of U.N. resolutions, Japan's Foreign Ministry said.

The officials agreed to demand North Korea cancel the planned launch, the ministry said in an emailed release.

META SUED IN JAPAN OVER INVESTMENT ADS WITH FAKE CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS

@Jackie San

Four people sued the Japanese arm of U.S. tech giant Meta Platforms Inc on Thursday over false investment ads using fake celebrity endorsements on Facebook and Instagram.

The plaintiffs, including those from Kobe and Tokyo, filed the lawsuit with the Kobe District Court, claiming they had lost money because the company was negligent in verifying the legitimacy of such advertisements. They are seeking a total of 23 million yen in damages.

Social media scams soliciting investments by using the names and images of prominent business figures without their consent have become nationwide problems lately, with the amount of money defrauded reaching around 27.8 billion yen in 2023 alone, according to the National Police Agency.

While the government plans to come up with measures to tackle such crimes around June, a ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker involved in promoting digital issues said Thursday that introducing legal restrictions is possible amid the increasing number of social media scams.

The lawsuit filed on Thursday is believed to be the first seeking compensation from social media operators over damages derived from fake ads, according to the plaintiffs' lawyers.

The lawyers are considering whether to file additional lawsuits as more people have sought their advice about similar incidents.

The four plaintiffs transferred money to designated bank accounts under the impression that they were investing in foreign exchange margin trading after viewing fake advertisements on Facebook and Instagram between August and October last year, according to the lawsuit.

These ads falsely suggested endorsements from Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, founder of online fashion retailer Zozo Inc, and internet entrepreneur Hiroyuki Nishimura, founder of popular message board 2channel, among others.

The plaintiffs alleged that the company neglected its duty to assess the potential harm to customers and verify the authenticity of ad content while posting fake advertisements and profiting from advertising revenues.

Yasumichi Kokufu, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, criticized Meta for "not sufficiently checking the scam ads" during a press conference in Kobe.

Meanwhile, a Meta public relations official said the company will refrain from commenting on individual cases.

Meta, formerly Facebook Inc, founded by Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the big technology companies along with Google LLC, Apple Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp.

JAPAN MAYOR QUITS OVER 99 SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS

JAPAN MAYOR QUITS OVER 99 SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS

@Jackie San

TOKYO (March 01, 2024): The resignation of a Japanese mayor facing 99 allegations of sexual harassment sparked anger on social media on Friday, after he denied some cases and wept at a press conference.

An official investigation accused Hideo Kojima, the mayor of a town in central Gifu region, of several incidents of harassment, including touching a colleague’s breasts and buttocks.

The 74-year-old said Thursday he would quit, a day after wiping away tears in front of reporters as he described his brother scolding him.

He denied some of the allegations detailed in a report by an independent committee, including that he had hugged women employees in incidents witnessed by others.

“I didn’t do it,” he said in televised comments, explaining that his gestures may have looked like a hug, but were not.

“The report lacks neutrality and I want them to investigate more carefully,” the mayor said.

According to broadcaster NHK, Kojima said he had not read the whole report, which alleged that he would tell subordinates that “his hands were fair and smooth … to force female employees to touch them”.

The report said he would also “show off his legs by rolling up his trousers, and tell them to touch”.

Some workers used disinfectant spray after being touched, the report said, also detailing inappropriate remarks and demands such as asking an employee to bend over.

No criminal case has been publicly launched against Kojima, who will leave his post on Tuesday.

The probe, launched following reports in the weekly Shukan Bunshun magazine, said the mayor had often patted women workers on their heads.

Kojima said this had been meant to “express gratitude”.

The news was trending on social media platform X on Friday, with many users expressing anger.

“He shouldn’t be crying. It’s the employees who will want to cry,” one wrote.

“If you say patting someone on their head is just a form of communication, then do it to older men,” said another.

During its investigation, the committee even conducted a survey among 193 workers in Kojima’s municipality.

Of the 161 who responded, around 53 per cent of men and 58 per cent of women said the mayor had done something that made them feel uncomfortable.

The global #MeToo movement was slow to pick up in Japan, where many victims are said to be too scared to come forward, but a handful of high-profile cases have recently forced a reckoning.
