COVID-19 : Fourth Death In Three Days In Brunei Darussalam

" Health Ministry Confirms Delta Outbreak; Authorises Use Of Four (4) Self-Test Kits For Public "

BANDAR SEGI BEGAWAN : The Health Ministry on Thursday August 26, 2021 confirmed the deaths of two (2) COVID-19 patients and the presence of the fast-spreading Delta Variant in Brunei Darussalam amid soaring community cases over the past two (2) weeks.

A 51-year-old man, known as Case 869, became the seventh (7) person to succumb to the coronavirus since the pandemic began in Brunei.

Brunei has reported four (4) coronavirus fatalities in just three (3) days this week.

In a press briefing, Health Minister YB Dato Dr Hj Md Isham Hj Jaafar said another COVID-19 patient - a 52-year-old man identified as Case 2197 had died of haemorrhagic stroke and is not classified as a coronavirus-related death.

The ministry also detected 106 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, raising the cumulative number of infections to 2,265.

Two (2) new clusters were linked to Patient 1888 and Case 2085, while 42 of the new infections were linked to 13 existing active clusters.

The ministry has yet to determine the source of infection for 47 new cases.

Forty-one (41) people have recovered in the past 24 hours, and 35 people are in the Intensive Care Unit.

YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Isham said majority (70.6 percent) of the 1,678 active cases are asymptomatic and another 17.7 percent of COVID-19 patients developed mild symptoms.

Severely and critically ill patients account for 5.1 percent and 0.8 percent of the active cases, respectively.

Eight Pregnant Women Among Active Cases

The Minister said eight (8) pregnant women are receiving treatment at the National Isolation Centre, including one (1) who gave birth to a baby boy through caesarian section.

YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Isham urged all pregnant women to get vaccinated as they are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Nearly 75 percent of the 2,270 pregnant women registered at government maternal health clinics have taken the COVID-19 jab so far, according to the health ministry's data.

In response to a question on the safety of Brunei's Moderna vaccines following reports of possible contamination in Japan, the minister said the country's shipment of Moderna doses are not affected.

Quoting a Moderna spokesperson, Reuters reported that the affected batches were meant for distribution in Japan only.

To date, 45.2 percent of the Brunei population have received at least one (1) vaccine dose.

Some 17.7 percent of residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Delta Variant Reaches Brunei Darussalam

After over two (2) weeks of waiting, the health ministry confirmed that an overseas lab had detected the Delta Variant in all 20 samples of local coronavirus cases that were sent for genome sequencing.

The Delta Variant, which has been driving the surge in cases across the world, is more than twice as infectious as previous strains.

Following the discovery of the Delta Variant in Brunei Darussalam, YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Isham called on the public not to panic and continue practising COVID-19 guidelines to curb its spread.

" Whatever guidelines that have been released must be followed, especially staying at home because we are in a semi-lockdown. The more people stay at home, the better. And of course, vaccination is an important part," he added.

The government on Wednesday August 26, 2021 received a genome sequencing machine donated from Chinese investment firm IDG Capital, which will allow Brunei's labs to identify different variants of viruses.

MoH Authorises Use Of Four (4) Self-Test Kits

The Health Ministry has also authorised the use of Four (4) Antigen Rapid Test (ART) Kits in the market.

YB Dato Dr Hj Mohd Isham encouraged pharmacies, clinics and other retailers to import the approved test kits as the ministry currently does not have enough stock that can be distributed to the clinic.

Antigen rapid tests usually take 10-15 minutes to detect an active COVID-19 infection, but is not as sensitive as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

Those who test positive after using the ART self-test kit should isolate themselves and proceed to a swab centre for further testing, the minister add on.

PATIENTS INFECTED BY DELTA VARIANT OF COVID-19 IN INDONESIA SHOW MILD SYMPTOMS

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA, INDONESIA - The Delta Variant of COVID-19, which is first identified in India, has already spread in Indonesia Country. A number of experts and studies explain that the variant or known as B.1.617.2 is quickly transmissible, and patients infected with the variant develop worse symptoms than those with other variants.

Head of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, Amin Soebandrio, explained that symptoms developed by patients with Delta Variant in Indonesia are still similar to those of other variants. " There are no authentic reports of differences in symptoms in patients infected with the Delta," Amin reported via a phone call on Tuesday night, June 15, 2021.

However, the Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) confirmed that the Delta COVID-19 variant spreads faster. " Many tested positive for the variant, but they develop mild symptoms, " Amin reports.

Based on the Health Ministry's data as of June 13, 2021, there are 104 cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant in five (5) provinces, namely South Sumatra (3 cases in Palembang, Prabumulih, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir), Jakarta (20 cases), Central Java (75 cases spread in Kudus, Brebes, Cilacap), Central Kalimantan (3 cases in Gunung Mas, Palangkaraya) and East Kalimantan (3 cases in Samarinda).

The FKUI Dean Ari Fahrial Syam announced on Monday the Delta Variant is increasingly spreading in the archipelago. " In the last four (4) weeks, there is a 51.4 per cent hike in the variant cases in Indonesia, " Ari outlined the data from the GISAID Initiative.

Ari also reports that the Delta Variant caused the patient's symptoms to be more severe and increased the risk of hearing loss, heartburn, nausea, and having complications. COVID-19 patients with the variant thus need to be hospitalized and oxygen supplementation.

More Severe Cases Of COVID-19 As Numbers Triple In 2 Weeks - SINGAPORE

SINGAPORE

The number of COVID - 19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) here or requiring oxygen supplementation has tripled over the last two (2) weeks, rising from eight (8) in total on July 15 to 25 on Wednesday (July 18, 2021), with experts warning the number likely to grow.

But they were quick to add that the healthcare system should be able to cope despite the worrying trend.

Professor Dale Fisher, senior consultant at the National University Hospital's (NUH) Division of Infectious Diseases, announced there has been an increase in the number of unvaccinated people contracting the disease, after almost 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the last week.

" Over that week, the number of unvaccinated cases in the older age groups has more than doubled, so I feel we can expect the numbers of new severe cases to increase significantly," he said.

But he added that the rise should still be "well within" the healthcare system's capabilities.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung told on Wednesday that Singapore can open up about 1,000 ICU beds for critically ill COVID-19 patients. But he had also pointed out earlier that it takes only five (5) weeks to overwhelm the hospitals' ICU capacity.

Prof Paul Tambyah, a professor of medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, said that with more than half the population here fully vaccinated, he anticipates one or two new severe cases a day if infections remain in the hundreds.

This estimate is based on the number of severe cases reported in other countries such as Britain and the United States where significant proportions of the population have been fully vaccinated, said Prof Tambyah, who is also a senior consultant at NUH's Division of Infectious Diseases.

Prof Teo Yik Ying, dean of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, noted that the number of infections reported daily is still above 100, with a number of cases among people above 70 years old who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

" These are the ones that are at a high risk to experience severe disease and require hospital care," he said.

Two (2) teams from the school have been carrying out modelling to predict which way the numbers might go-one led by Dr Hannah Clapham, an assistant professor at the school, and another by Associated Professor Alex Cook, who is vice-dean of research.

Prof Cook noted that vaccine uptake in the older age groups, who are at greatest risk, has risen to about 75 per cent.

Taking into account this statistic, as well as the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing severe disease, the teams predicted that the risk of someone ending up in the ICU with COVID-19 has fallen from around 2 per cent to about 0.2 per cent.

This varies across age groups, Prof Cook clarified, as those under 40 have a much lower risk.

Prof Fisher, who is also a professor of medicine at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, said a key factor in predicting the trend in terms of future severe infections is the rate of infection in unvaccinated people.

Prof Teo said another important factor is where community transmission takes place.

" For example, if present or new clusters emerge in areas frequented by the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions, then when these people are exposed and infected, that is when we start to see more medical complications arise," he explained.

But Singapore is "well prepared" for rising numbers of severe cases, said Prof Tambyah.

Prof Fisher noted that while hospitals here have good capacity to deal with a surge in cases, they may need to postpone some functions such as elective work and clinics for a short while.

" If there was another hospital cluster, that would make service challenging. But we have got through such events before," he said.

Prof Teo said that Singapore already has the necessary capacity to handle a slight increase in severe cases.

" Our public hospitals monitor the utilisation of these resources very carefully, and we actually take a whole-of-country approach towards managing the usage of these resources, " he said.

For example, when the required number of ICU beds was higher in mid-2020, the hospitals communicated with one another to identify available ICU spaces so patients could be sent there.

But he cautioned that if the number of those with severe illness spikes, stricter restrictions, which could include another circuit breaker, might be needed to break chains of transmission and allow hospitals to recover their capacity.

" This is really only a scenario that we will see when the spread enters vulnerable communities such as the unvaccinated elderly or unvaccinated people with underlying medical conditions," he said.

Prof Cook agreed, adding that there is a limit to how many beds in hospitals can be converted into ICUs.

" Potentially, if there are large outbreaks after we reopen, we may have to reimplement a temporary circuit breaker to safeguard the healthcare system, but the risk of this really depends on how many elderly Singaporean citizens and residents come forward for vaccination," he said.

" Right now, the number of severe infections is much lower than at its peak early last year, thanks to the vaccine roll-out."

MINISTER CONDEMS RACIST JIBE AGAINST NATIONAL SPRINTER WHO WORE HIJAB AT OLYMPICS TOKYO

A minister has come to the defence of national sprinter Azreen Nabila Alias after a social media comment drew scorn for questioning her decision to wear a hijab at the Tokyo Olympics.

Zuraida Kamaruddin, the housing and local government minister, said no one had the right to question the athlete's choice of dress whether it was based on comfort or religious beliefs.

" Her dressing has nothing to do with her performance as an athlete. All national athletes in fact should be able to perform in their respective competitions with the peace of mind that their country is behind them,s Zuraida said.

On Friday, a social media user attacked Azreen for donning a hijab when taking part in the women's 100m event.

" I do not mind of her being last in the 100 meters heats but I cannot tolerate is she dressed differently from the others. She was fully covered as if she was running during winter," said Hugh Lawrence Zehnder, in a posting which was criticised by netizens.

" If her religion prohibits her from dressing like the others it would be wise for her to drop the sport and concentrate on winning the Koran recital competition and let the non-Malay represent the nation in the sport."
