KUCHING SOUTH CITY COUNCIL (MBKS) LAUNCHES BODYCAM INITIATIVE FOR ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS - KUCHING SARAWAK
KUCHING SOUTH CITY COUNCIL (MBKS) LAUNCHES BODYCAM INITIATIVE FOR ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS - KUCHING SARAWAK, MALAYSIA
KUCHING SARAWAK (JANUARY 02, 2025): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) today officially launched its body camera (bodycam) initiative for enforcement officers, marking a significant step towards enhancing public safety and operational transparency.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed hope that all 24 local councils across Sarawak would adopt similar technology, as MBKS is the first council in the state to formally roll out the initiative.
While noting that 16 local councils in the state have already started using bodycams, the systems and equipment they use differ from those adopted by MBKS.
“MBKS’s launch today serves as an example for others to follow, showcasing the benefits of this initiative. This initiative has been in preparation for a year, involving careful planning and budget allocation.
“This programme represents a critical step in Kuching South’s progression toward becoming a Smart City. MBKS has deployed 10 body cameras for its enforcement officers, aiming to enhance public safety, improve accountability, and foster community trust.
“At present, 16 councils have implemented body cameras, while the remaining eight are in the process of acquiring the equipment.
“Although each council might use different system with each council currently tailoring its approach to its specific needs, standardising the system across all councils remains a future goal,” Dr Sim told a press conference after the launching ceremony today.
The Public Health, Housing, and Local Government minister highlighted the advantages of the bodycam initiative which include transparency and accountability through impartial records of interactions, to help build public trust and reduce complaints.
He also explained that bodycams help protect officers against false claims and serve as valuable tools for reviewing incidents.
“Furthermore, the technology encourages respectful interactions, reduces the use of force, and provides crucial legal evidence, streamlining investigations and operational efficiency,” he said.
Addressing privacy concerns, Dr Sim reassured the public that the cameras are designed to protect both residents and enforcement officers by providing clear, objective accounts of incidents.
He also pointed out that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of digital transformation and Smart City development.
Noting that 60-70 per cent of Kuching’s traffic lights are already “smart”, he also expressed confidence in the state’s commitment to integrating technology into urban management.
“Being a Smart City involves more than just technology; it is about using innovative tools to create a safer, more sustainable, and people-centered urban environment.
“The body camera initiative is a step toward building a better Kuching for all,” he said.
Also present during the press conference were Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and other officials from MBKS.

NUMBER OF NEW YEAR 2025 POSTCARDS NATIONWIDE 33% LOWER THAN IN 2024 - JAPAN
TOKYO
Japan Post announced Wednesday a preliminary figure for the number of New Year cards (nengajo) delivered on New Year's Day.
According to the report, about 491 million cards were delivered nationwide, down 33% from the previous year (743 million in 2024). The average number of cards delivered per person was 4 (6 in 2024).
The decrease is thought to be due to the impact of postal fee hikes and social media. The postage for New Year postcards for 2025 has increased by 22 yen, from 63 yen to 85 yen.

EMPEROR & FAMILY GREET FLAG-WAVING CROWD AT PALACE FOR NEW YEAR 2025
EMPEROR & FAMILY GREET FLAG-WAVING CROWD AT PALACE FOR NEW YEAR 2025
TOKYO
Emperor Naruhito and his family greeted throngs of New Year’s well-wishers from a balcony window at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Thursday.
Some shouted banzai — “live long” — while others waved small paper Japanese flags.
“I feel for those who are still greatly suffering,” Naruhito said, referring to the quake in Ishikawa Prefecture that struck a year ago, as well as flooding and other natural disasters throughout the nation.
Last year, his appearance was canceled at the last minute because of a devastating quake on the Noto Peninsula that killed hundreds of people.
In the royal family’s New Year video message for this year, released earlier in the week, Naruhito showed a beautifully crafted mask from the Noto area, which are worn by drummers who perform in a traditional style called gojinjo daiko.
The emperor's 2021 and 2022 greetings, which attract huge crowds to the palace’s usually cloistered grounds, were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Naruhito also offered prayers for people’s happiness in an appearance that also included his wife Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko.
Aiko, who turned 23 last month, is at the center of a national debate about the rules of male-only succession in the imperial family. Under current law, she will leave the family, once she marries outside the imperial family.
Also standing on the balcony was Emperor Emeritus Akihito, who abdicated in favor of his son in 2019, and his wife Empress Emerita Michiko, as well as Naruhito’s younger brother and his family.
Satoshi Nishoji, who came from Osaka and stood in line for five hours to join the crowd, said “I was so happy to see them all because I haven't made it the last five years."
“I want to come next year, too,” he added happily.
After the emperor and his family members waved, the crowd broke into a solemn rendition of the national anthem.
The emperor does not have political power but has symbolic significance for Japan. Historically, World War II was fought in the name of Naruhito’s grandfather Hirohito. Over the decades since Japan’s defeat in 1945, the Imperial Family has advocated peace.
In this year’s statement, Naruhito noted that 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, adding that he was filled with pain thinking about the death and suffering that remain in war-torn areas.
“I truly feel the need for people to accept our differences so we may work together, hand in hand, toward realizing world peace,” he said.

TOKYO
Japan on Thursday marked one year since a fatal collision at Tokyo's Haneda airport between a Japan Airlines jetliner landing on a runway and a coast guard plane that erroneously entered the runway.
The collision on the evening of Jan. 2 killed five of the six people aboard the Japan Coast Guard's Bombardier DHC-8-300, while all 379 people aboard the JAL Airbus A350 escaped despite flames engulfing the plane.
The coast guard aircraft was heading to Niigata Prefecture to deliver relief supplies for people hit by the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture and surrounding areas on the Sea of Japan coast the previous day.
Flight voice recordings from the coast guard plane released last month showed that its crew likely erroneously believed their aircraft was allowed to enter the runway when it was hit by the jetliner.
The Japan Transport Safety Board said in its report that the airport traffic controller was focused on monitoring the JAL plane that was set to land on the runway and was unaware of the erroneous entry into the runway by the coast guard plane.
The crew of the JAL jetliner could not visually confirm the presence of the coast guard plane on the runway before touchdown. Not only were the lights of the plane and the runway both white, but the accident occurred after sunset with little to no moonlight, according to the report.
