Dandruff - is a skin condition that mainly affects the scalp. Symptoms include flaking and sometimes mild itchiness. It can result in social or self-estreem problems. A more severe form of the condition, which includes inflammation of the skin, is known as seborrhoeic dermatitis.
The cause is unclear. But believed to involve a number of genetic and environmental factors. The condition may worsen in the wet or the best situation in winter day. It is not due to poor hygiene. The underlying mechanism involves the over growth of skin cells. Diagnosis is based on symptoms.
Dandruff Causes ?
The exact causes of dandruff are unknown.
One theory is that it is linked to hormone production, as it often begins around the time of puberty.

1 - Seborrheic dermatitis
People with seborrheic dermatitis have irritated, oily skin, and they are more likely to have dandruff.
Seborrheic dermatitis affects many areas of the skin, including the backs of the ears, the breastbone, eyebrows, and the sides of the nose.
The skin will be red, greasy, and covered with flaky white or yellow scales.
Seborrheic dermatitis is closely linked with Malassezia, a fungus that normally lives on the scalp and feeds on the oils that the hair follicles secrete.
It does not usually cause a problem, but in some people it becomes overactive, causing scalp to become irritated and to produce extra skin cells.
As these extra skin cells die and fall off, they mix with the oil from the hair and scalp, for dandruff.
2 - Dry Skin
People with dry skin are more likely to have dandruff. Cold winter air combined with overheated rooms is a common cause of itchy, flaking skin. Dandruff that stems from overheated tends to have smaller, non-oily flakes.
3 - Shampooing and skin care products
Certain hair care products can trigger a red, itchy, scaling scalp. Frequent shampooing hair cause dandruff, as it can irritate the scalp.
Some people say not shampooing enough can cause a buildup of oil and dead skin cells, leading to dandruff, but evidence is lacking that this is true.
4 - Not enough hair brushing
Combing/brushing the hair regularly reduces the risk of dandruff, because it aids in normal shedding of skin.

Not consuming enough foods that contain zinc, B vitamins, and some types of fats may increase the risk.

One study found that between 20 and 83 percent of people with HIV have seborrheic dermatitis, compared with 3-5 percent in the general population.
Patients who are recovering from a heart attack or a stroke and those with a weak immune system may be more prone to dandruff.

What Get Rids of Dandruff at Home ?
Is daily cleansing of the hair, using a mild and gentle shampoo. In addition to daily shampooing, you could also try a few home remedies for dandruff, which include:
Take about half a cup of fermented yogurt and apply it on to your scalp thoroughly. Let the yogurt stay for at least an hour, before rinsing it off with water and a mild shampoo.
Add about 2 tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar to 6 tablespoons of hot water and apply the mixture on to your scalp. Cover your head with a piece of cloth and leave the solution on overnight. Wash your hair with warm water and shampoo the next morning.
ALORE VERA GEL:
Extract some fresh gel from an Aloe Vera Leaf and apply it on to your scalp. Leave the gel on for as long as possible, preferably overnight (more better), before rinsing it off.
Mix some ginger root in warm olive oil and apply it on to your head. This is one of the most effective dry scalp home remedies, which not only gets rid of dandruff, but also nourishes your hair.
Essential oils are also an important part of natural remedies for dandruff. Some of the herbal oils recommended for curing dandruff include:
- Lavender Oil
- Tea Tree Oil
- Clary Sage Oil
- Eucalyptus Oil
- Crypess Oil
- Basil Oil
- Birch Oil
- Thyme Oil
Make sure that you dilute these essential oils in some plain water before applying it on to your scalp.
There are several brands of over-the-counter dandruff shampoos that are also quite effective in treating the problem. Medicated dandruff shampoos include:
- Ketoconazole Shampoo
- Salicylic Acid Shampoo
- Zinc Pyrithione Shampoo
- Tar-Based Shampoo
- Selenium Sulfide Shampoo
Your may need to try a few different types of shampoos till you find the cure for dandruff that works for you. Massage the shampoo into the scalp thoroughly and leave it on for at least 5 minutes, before rinsing your hair. Once you notice a reduction in the dandruff, you can reduce the daily use to twice or three times a week.
Certain lifestyle changes may also help control dandruff to a great extent. These include:
- Practicing technique to reduce stress
- Following a healthy and nutritious diet
- Getting an adequate amount of rest and exercise during the day
- Scheduling regular appointments with hair care experts
- Avoiding commercial hair styling products and devices
- Massaging the scalp with warm oil regularly.
- Maintaining strict hygienic measures.
