ANALYST NEED ABOUT GRS TOUR CRUCIAL TO WIN HEARTS AND MINDS OF SABAHANS
KOTA KINABALU, SABAH: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is gaining more traction among the people with its tour of the state called the Jelajah GRS programme, says an analyst today.
Sabah Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Tony Paridi Bagang said this bodes well for the five-party coalition, which is led by the Sabah chapter of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), ahead of the 15th General Election (GE15).
" The main intention of Jelajah GRS is to ensure it is visible to all the people and...(gets) more support," he said when contacted on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.
GRS might not get to finish the tour of all 25 Sabah Parliamentary Divisions with GE15 speculated to be held at any time this year, but Bagang said it has to stick with the programme nonetheless.
" Whether or not it has enough time, GRS has to do it continuously. It must be visible (to) the people anytime and anywhere.
" I think in general, people know about GRS but the question of how detailed (this knowledge is), especially among those in the rural areas, still lingers," he said.
GRS, which also includes Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah STAR, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and United Sabah National Organisation (Usno), has already visited the interior Keningau constituency as well as the northern district of Kudat.
It was reported that some 7,000 people turned up at the programme in Keningau which was launched by Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Sunday (August, 28, 2022). It was also attended by key leaders of GRS.
During the Kudat leg of the tour on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Hajiji issued a call to all parties in Sabah to rally under the GRS banner ahead of GE15.
He said the coalition was the best platform under which to unite and bring development to the state and its people.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) senior lecturer Dr Romzi Ationg said the crowd at each stop will indicate the degree of support commanded by GRS.
He added that large crowds would also attract others to join the GRS bandwagon.
" Nevertheless, any failure to maintain the collaboration between component members can potentially hurt GRS.
" They must work harder especially in the rural areas, " he said, adding that GRS should fully utilise the statewide tour to explain exactly what the coalition was all about and what it could offer.
