THAKSIN ATTENDS 'LAST' PRESECUTOR WITNESS HEARING IN ARTICLE 112 CASE - THAILAND FORMER PRIME MINISTER

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra attended the public prosecutor's witness hearing on Thursday, which was scheduled to be the final state witness hearing in the Article 112 case against him, his laywer said.

Thaksin, accused of defaming the monarchy in an interview with South Korean media in 2015, arrived at the Criminal Court in the same blue Rolls-Royce he used to attend a state witness hearing on Wednesday.

His brother-in-law, Somchai Wongsawat, also attended the hearing to provide moral support.

Speaking to reporters before attending the hearing, Thaksin’s lawyer, Winyat Chartmontree, said the public prosecutor in charge of the case was scheduled to present accounts from three state witnesses on Thursday.

Winyat said he believed the three state witnesses could finish testifying by Thursday; otherwise, the prosecutor would ask the court for another witness hearing.

Winyat also mentioned that he had prepared several defence witnesses to testify in an attempt to disprove the information presented by the prosecutors.

The lawyer stated that the case was politically motivated, with Thaksin being a victim who had not been treated fairly by the government agencies in charge of the case from the beginning.

As a result, the defence was not concerned about the case, and Winyat was confident the defence could disprove the allegations.

5.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES FIJI, TREMORS FELT ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA

5.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES FIJI, TREMORS FELT ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

"A remarkable 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Fiji Islands Region on Thursday, 8,930 kilometres off Thailand, according to the Earthquake Observation Division."

Meanwhile, several tremors were reported in Thailand’s neighbouring countries, including three in Myanmar, two in the Nicobar Islands in India, and one in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The tremors recorded since the early hours of Thursday ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.9.

Among them, at 7.40 am, a 4.9 magnitude tremor hit Myanmar, around 18 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface. The epicentre was located approximately 314 km northwest of Pang Mapha district, Mae Hong Son province, Thailand.

Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, recorded the a magnitude of 4.5, at 7.43am. It occurred at a depth of around 80 kilometres, with the epicentre located approximately 490 km southwest of Mueang district, Phuket province.

A 4.1 magnitude tremor hit the Nicobar Islands, India, at 4.42am. The tremor originated about 10 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, with the epicentre located approximately 478 km northeast of Mueang district, Phang Nga province.

Earthquake swarm shakes Nicobar Islands, India, nearly 100 times

The Department of Mineral Resources has summarised the series of earthquakes that occurred from June 24 to July 1, 2025. A total of 94 earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 3.4 to 4.9, were recorded in the Andaman Sea, to the east of the Nicobar Islands, India.

The earthquakes were classified as minor to light, with no significant main shocks, and they occurred as part of a swarm over a specific period. The epicentres of these quakes were located about 450 kilometres northwest of Mueang district, Phang Nga province, and approximately 100 kilometres from an underwater volcano.

The department stated that the cause of these earthquakes was due to the movement along the Sumatran fault in the Andaman Sea. However, the department confirmed that these events did not trigger a tsunami due to the relatively small size of the tremors.

No impact has been reported in Thailand, and crucially, these quakes were caused by horizontal fault movement, not the subduction-type movements that lead to tsunamis, as seen in the 2004 disaster, the department explained.

The Department of Mineral Resources continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates.

THAILAND FOLLOWS BOLLYWOOD SCRIPT, GETS A ONE-DAY PRIME MINISTER IN SURIYA - THAILAND

THAILAND FOLLOWS BOLLYWOOD SCRIPT, GETS A ONE-DAY PRIME MINISTER IN SURIYA - THAILAND

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Thailand's politics just delivered a Nayak-like hit. Veteran leader Suriya Jungrungreangkit stepped in as prime minister, but only for a day. Suriya's elevation was prompted by the Constitutional Court's decision to suspend PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra over alleged ethical violations. A Cabinet reshuffle on Thursday will give a new Thai PM.

Remember Nayak, the 2001 Shankar's classic where journalist Shivaji, played by Anil Kapoor, becomes a chief minister for a day and sets the system ablaze? Thailand seems to be dabbling in its own version of that Bollywood script. On Wednesday, veteran politician and Thailand's deputy PM Suriya Jungrungreangkit took over as the country's acting prime minister, a post he'll hold for around 24 hours before being replaced in a scheduled cabinet reshuffle, reported news agency AFP.

So, it's not fiction. It's just a result of Thailand's politics moving at a fast pace of late.

This elevation of Suriya Jungrungreangkit comes after the Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Tuesday.

The court found "sufficient cause to suspect" that the 38-year-old, who is the daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, breached ministerial ethics in the midst of a diplomatic row involving Cambodia.

At the heart of the controversy was a leaked audio recording where Paetongtarn referred to Cambodian ex-leader Hun Sen as "uncle" and described a Thai military commander as her "opponent". The remarks, made during a tense cross-border standoff that turned deadly in May, sparked outrage and triggered accusations of undermining the Thai military.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra's suspension added to the turbulence already facing her family's political dynasty, with her father Thaksin Shinawatra currently facing royal defamation charges in court.

SURIYA, THAILAND PM FOR JUST A DAY

Enter Suriya Jungrungreangkit. He was, so far, Thailand's transport minister and deputy PM.

The 70-year-old politician took the reins as acting prime minister after Paetongtarn's suspension. Jungrungreangkit attended a ceremonial event in Bangkok marking the 93rd anniversary of the prime minister's office, an ironic setting for a man who won't even be in office for 93 hours.

Often dubbed a political weathervane for his ability to align with ruling powers, Suriya's day-long premiership is going to be short-lived. A cabinet reshuffle, already on the cards, will culminate in the swearing-in of Phumtham Wechayachai as the new interior minister and deputy PM on Thursday.

THAILAND AND THE SHINWATRA DYNASTY

Despite assigning herself the post of culture minister in the new Cabinet, Paetongtarn's fall from the top seat reflects the Shinawatra family's waning grip on Thai politics.

Once seen as the unstoppable force behind the ruling Pheu Thai party, Paetongtarn's plummeting approval ratings and desertion by coalition allies have weakened her standing significantly.

For now, Thailand has embraced its own Nayak moment, though unlike in the film, not many would be expecting Suriya to clean up the system overnight, like Anil Kapoor did in the movie.

THE TOURISM AUTHORITY OF THAILAND (TAT) CONFIRMS TOMORROWLAND 2026 IN CHONBURI WITH BILLION-BAHT INVESTMENT - THAILAND

THE TOURISM AUTHORITY OF THAILAND (TAT) CONFIRMS TOMORROWLAND 2026 IN CHONBURI WITH BILLION-BAHT INVESTMENT - THAILAND

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

"TAT confirms Tomorrowland, the world-renowned music festival, will take place in Chonburi, Thailand, for the first time in Asia in December 2026, with investment expected to reach billions of baht."

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), revealed that the organisers of the world-renowned music festival, Tomorrowland, from Belgium, have decided to choose Chonburi Province, Thailand, for their 2026 event.

This will be the first time Tomorrowland will be held in Asia, with the event scheduled for December 2026.

Tomorrowland is the largest electronic dance music (EDM) festival in the world and is considered the best concert globally. The organisers chose Chonburi as the destination because it offers a large area and convenient access.

The province is well-connected with U-Tapao International Airport and is easily reachable from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.

Tourists from around the world will be able to travel to Chonburi quickly and conveniently, with road access also available.

Chonburi is well-equipped with accommodations and hotels, and the surrounding community areas are also ready to host additional tourists attending Tomorrowland. The area, which is close to the sea and partially privately owned, will see private landowners involved in the improvement of the venue.

"At present, Tomorrowland is set to hold its event in Thailand in December 2026. Discussions are ongoing regarding what support the government can offer, such as BOI incentives, privileges, and possibly partial funding. These discussions are focused on the benefits Thailand will receive. The main investment will come from Tomorrowland itself, as well as private sector players who will manage the event. The main issue that prevented the event from taking place previously was Tomorrowland’s need to find the most suitable location. Now that the venue has been selected, Thailand is seen as the most promising country in Asia. We believe everyone will support the budget, as Thailand will benefit greatly," said Thapanee.

She further explained that the overall investment for Tomorrowland 2026 is expected to reach several billion baht. The event will be part of a long-term contract for high-quality concerts and activities. The final details will depend on the agreement, but it is expected to last no less than five years, with an average annual budget of around US$10 million.

The arrival of Tomorrowland in Thailand is not just about concerts; it will also include an academy and other events. The academy will help elevate the capabilities of Thai entrepreneurs in organising large-scale music and entertainment events. Tomorrowland is known as the world’s number one concert, not only for fun but also for contributing to the community's well-being.

Additionally, attendees from around the world will join the event. TAT expects hundreds of thousands of people to participate. In its first year, Tomorrowland will hold a 2-3 day event, offering exclusive packages, pre- and post-tours, and hotel accommodations. This model will resemble Tomorrowland in Belgium, which will significantly boost Thailand’s tourism industry."

PROTESTORS RALLY IN BANGKOK TO DEMAND THAIL PRIME MINISTER'S RESIGNATION OVER LEAKED CAMBODIA CALL - BANGKOK THAILAND

PROTESTORS RALLY IN BANGKOK TO DEMAND THAIL PRIME MINISTER'S RESIGNATION OVER LEAKED CAMBODIA CALL - BANGKOK THAILAND

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

BANGKOK (AP) — Thousands rallied in Thailand’s capital on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, part of the brewing political turmoil set off by a leaked phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Paetongtarn faces growing dissatisfaction over her handling of a recent border dispute with Cambodia involving an armed confrontation May 28. One Cambodian soldier was killed in a relatively small, contested area.

The recorded phone call with Hun Sen was at the heart of the demonstration Saturday and has set off a string of investigations in Thailand that could lead to Paetongtarn’s removal.

Outrage over the call mostly revolved around Paetongtarn’s comments toward an outspoken regional army commander and her perceived attempts to appease Hun Sen, the current Cambodian Senate president, to ease tensions at the border.

About 20,000 protesters joined the rally as of Saturday night, according to an estimate by the Bangkok police. Despite a downpour in the afternoon, they held national flags and placards around the Victory Monument in central Bangkok as speakers took turns blasting the government. The participants, many of whom came in the morning, chanted slogans, sang and danced to nationalist songs.

“From a heart of a Thai person, we’ve never had a prime minister who’s so weak,” said Tatchakorn Srisuwan, 47, a tour guide from Surat Thani province. “We don’t want to invade anyone, but we want to say that we are Thai and we want to protect Thailand’s sovereignty.”

The rally ended peacefully at night with the protesters vowing to return if Paetongtarn and her government ignore their demands.

There were many familiar faces from a conservative, pro-royalist group known as Yellow Shirts. They are longtime foes of Paetongtarn’s father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who reportedly has a close relationship with Hun Sen and who was toppled in a military coup in 2006. Rallies organized by Yellow Shirts also helped oust the elected government of Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, in a 2014 coup.

Hun Sen responds

Hun Sen on Saturday said the action by the Thai army at the disputed area was a serious violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, despite the country’s goodwill in attempting to resolve the border issue.

“This poor Cambodia has suffered from foreign invasion, war and genocide, been surrounded and isolated and insulted in the past, but now Cambodia has risen on an equal face with other countries,” Hun Sen told an audience of thousands at the 74th anniversary celebration of the founding of his long-ruling Cambodian People’s Party in the capital, Phnom Penh.

There is a long history of territorial disputes between the countries. Thailand is still rattled by a 1962 International Court of Justice ruling that awarded Cambodia the disputed territory where the historic Preah Vihear temple stands. There were sporadic though serious clashes there in 2011. The ruling from the U.N. court was reaffirmed in 2013, when Yingluck was prime minister.

Political fracture and investigations

The scandal has broken Paetongtarn’s fragile coalition government, costing her Pheu Thai Party the loss of its biggest partner, Bhumjaithai Party. Its departure left the 10-party coalition with 255 seats, just above the majority of the 500-seat house.

Paetongtarn also faces other investigations that could lead to her removal from office.

Sarote Phuengrampan, secretary-general of the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, said Wednesday that his agency is investigating Paetongtarn for a serious breach of ethics over the Hun Sen phone call. He didn’t give a possible timeline for a decision.

Reports said the Constitutional Court could decide as early as next week whether it will take a petition requesting Paetongtarn’s removal because of the phone call, enabling the court to suspend her from duty pending an investigation. The prime minister said Tuesday that she’s not worried and is ready to give evidence to support her case.

“It was clear from the phone call that I had nothing to gain from it, and I also didn’t cause any damage to the country,” she said.

The court last year removed her predecessor from Pheu Thai over a breach of ethics. Thailand’s courts, especially the Constitutional Court, are considered a bulwark of the country’s royalist establishment, which has used them and nominally independent state agencies such as the Election Commission to cripple or sink political opponents.

MOUNT FUJI CLIMBING SEASON STARTS WITH YEN 4,000 FEE - KOFU JAPAN

MOUNT FUJI CLIMBING SEASON STARTS WITH YEN 4,000 FEE - KOFU JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Mount Fuji's climbing season commenced as the most popular trail opened Tuesday, with local authorities charging a doubled fee of 4,000 yen to ease overcrowding and the impact on the environment.

Yamanashi Prefecture is accepting a maximum of 4,000 hikers per day on the Yoshida Trail, the most commonly used route to the summit of the 3,776-meter mountain, that is scheduled to remain open through Sept. 10.

"I made it just in time to see the sun come up. I'm very happy. I want to climb mountains in other countries, too," said Shiho Miyaoka, a high school student from Kyoto who came to Japan's highest peak with her parents to see the sunrise.

The prefecture has tightened measures amid a rise in foreign visitors and growing concern about the many ill-prepared hikers seen on the mountain in recent years.

Those without an overnight reservation for a mountain hut will be prevented from passing through a gate at the 5th station from 2 p.m., two hours earlier than last year, to 3 a.m.

People planning to use the Yoshida Trail must also agree when making an online reservation to terms set by the local government, including the use of warm clothing and appropriate footwear.

Local government officials acting as "Mount Fuji rangers" at the gate will provide safety guidance. Starting from this season, they can bar entry to lightly dressed visitors.

The three other trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side of the mountain are scheduled to open on July 10, with the local government also charging a 4,000 yen fee but without an upper limit for the number of hikers.

Mt. Fuji, designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year during its official climbing season through September.
