The forensic pathologist also ruled out the theory that she was stuffed inside a washing machine.

A forensic pathologist has dismissed claims that Zara Qairina Mahathir was assaulted before her death, telling the Coroner's Court today, 4 September, that her injuries were consistent with a fall from height

During the inquest, Dr Jessie Hiu from Queen Elizabeth Hospital was pressed by defence counsel Azhier Farhan on whether the fractures sustained by Zara Qairina could have come from repeated blows.

"The fractures she sustained on both feet were caused by high-impact force, typically seen in falls from height or road traffic accidents," she testified.

She explained that a reconstruction of the fall showed Zara Qairina landed feet-first, with the impact travelling up her spine before her head struck the ground.

"The injuries are consistent with a fall from height, involving two direct impacts, a deceleration-type mechanism," she said."

When asked whether kicking, dragging, or blunt objects could have caused the same injuries, Dr Hiu replied:

"Kicking or stepping on the feet would not cause such fractures. The injuries to the lumbar vertebrae were caused by internal force, not direct impact from assault."

For such injuries to be caused by assault, she added, the force would have to be "extremely strong, leaving extensive overlying skin and soft tissue injuries, which were not observed".

No signs of physical assault

Azhier pressed further, asking if Zara Qairina had any injuries indicating she was beaten, strangled, or dragged. Dr Hiu's reply was a firm:

"No."

She also said there was no indication Zara Qairina had been placed at the site where she was discovered unconscious on 16 July.

Washing machine theory addressed

Prosecutor Datuk Badiuszaman Ahmad later questioned Dr Hiu on the presence of washing machines at the hostel where Zara Qairina had been staying.

She confirmed she saw domestic machines during her scene examination, but stressed that they were not industrial units.

When asked if Zara Qairina could have been put inside one, Dr Hiu responded:

"I didn't check the size of the drum. I was informed the deceased weighed 53kg. I don't know whether a person of that size could fit into the washing machine. However, I don't think the washing machine would start with a 53kg load."

Her testimony directly dismissed a viral claim that Zara Qairina was murdered after being placed inside a washing machine, an allegation that had sparked widespread public outrage.

Cause of death confirmed

Earlier, Dr Hiu confirmed that the neurosurgery ward certified Zara's death as "severe traumatic brain injury with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy".

Toxicology results showed no traces of illicit drugs.

The only substance detected was Phenytoin, an anti-seizure drug that she explained was part of Zara Qairina's treatment following her fall.

The inquest is set to run for 17 days, and Dr Hiu is the first witness.

Five teenage girls were earlier charged with verbally abusing Zara Qairina, whose death following alleged bullying has sparked calls for justice and transparency

The minors were accused of directing abusive words at Zara Qairina, which she allegedly heard and could have caused her distress, according to the New Straits Times.

Appearing before Judge Elsie Primus at the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu, the five, all reportedly under 18, pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, which relates to using or making threatening or abusive language or communication.

The offence was allegedly committed at a dormitory block of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah, between 10pm and 11pm on 15 July.

Zara Qairina, a Form One student, was found unconscious after allegedly falling from the third floor of her dormitory about 4am the following day.

She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital on 17 July.
