"WORST EVER BEEN TO" -SHOT PUT ATHLETE WILLIAM MORRISON LAMBASTS THAILAND SEA GAMES 2025

Filipino shot putter William Morrison III did not hold back in expressing his frustration with the officiating and event management at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games following his bronze-medal finish in Bangkok, Thailand.

Competing at the Suphachalasai National Stadium, Morrison said his experience in the athletics competition was marred by what he believed were inconsistent rulings and disruptive procedures that affected athletes’ performances. He went as far as calling the meet the most problematic he has taken part in.

“Man, lots of issues, man. They’re saying that my shot put didn’t weigh in. This is the only place my shot put hasn’t weighed in. I’ve used that shot put at Asian Games, Asian Championship, in the States, in Canada, Japan, everywhere I’ve used it. It’s never been lightweight. And all of a sudden here, it’s lightweight,” Morrison said.

The veteran thrower also took issue with repeated stoppages during the event, stressing that interruptions—especially during an attempt—can break an athlete’s rhythm and concentration.

“And then I’m throwing, and they’re going to stop me in the middle of my throw? Like, why would they do that? Like, why would you stop me in the middle of my throw? Just to fix my bib,” he added.

“That’s not important. Would you stop one of the sprinters from running when they’re about to get in their blocks? And then the shot puts that they provided were dog sh*t. They were not balanced,” Morrison continued.

He further criticized the equipment supplied by the organizers, claiming the imbalance of the shot puts compromised fair competition.

“If you spin it on the ground, you can see the central… I don’t know. What do you call it? There’s no balance in it. It won’t even stay still when you balance it. And they’re brand new. Like, who’s going to throw with a brand new shot put? Just the fact that they’re talking to me between every single throw and stopping me in the middle of my throw is dog sh*t. Like, this is the worst SEA Games I’ve ever been to.”

Despite the setbacks, Morrison still secured the bronze medal with a best throw of 16.66 meters. The event also saw the fall of his previous SEA Games record of 18.14 meters, set during the 2021 edition in Vietnam, after Malaysia’s Jonah Chang Rigan unleashed a gold-winning throw of 18.78 meters.
