CUBA ELECTRIC WITHDRAWS APPLICATIONS FOR HAMAOKA NUCLEAR REACTORS RESTART - NAGOYA JAPAN

Chubu Electric Power Co on Friday submitted necessary documents to withdraw its applications for regulatory screening to restart two of the reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan.

The decision comes after an investigative committee of outside lawyers concluded earlier in the month that the utility manipulated seismic data during screening for the restart of the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors at the power plant.

The company decided on Sept 14 to withdraw the applications. At a press conference that day, Chubu Electric President Kingo Hayashi said the findings had raised serious doubts about the reliability of the applications.

"It would be inappropriate to let the original applications stand," he said.

The utility applied for regulatory screening of the two reactors in 2014 and 2015.
