PHILIPPINE GOVERNOR AND FIVE OTHERS SHOT DEAD IN LATEST ATTACK ON PHILIPPINE POLITICIANS

PHILIPPINE GOVERNOR AND FIVE OTHERS SHOT DEAD IN LATEST ATTACK ON PHILIPPINE POLITICIANS

@Jackie San

MANILA, PHILIPPINE (MARCH 04, 2023): A provincial governor in the central Philippines and five other people were shot dead by unknown gunmen today, his widow said, in the latest attack against local officials.

Local police said six suspects carrying rifles and dressed in uniforms similar to those worn by the armed services entered the governor's home in Pamplona town and opened fire.

Roel Degomo, governor of Negros Oriental province, and five others were killed in the shooting, his widow said.

" Governor Degamo did not deserve that kind of death. He was serving his constituents on a Saturday," Janice Degamo, who is also the mayor of Pamplona, said in a video posted on Facebook.

President Ferdinand Marcos condemned what he described as the "ASSASSSINATION" of his political ally and warned the perpetrators to "SURRENDER NOW IT WILL BE YOUR BEST OPTION".

" My government will not rest until we have brought the perpetrators of this dastradly and heinous crime to justice," Marcos added.

The condition of four other people who were shot in the incident was not disclosed.

The politician was distributing aid to constituents when he was shot, provincial police spokesman Kym Lopez told AFP.

Police said they were searching for 10 suspects, including the six gunmen, who fled the scene in two SUVs and a pickup truck before abandoning the vehicles in a nearby city.

MARCOS ALLY

Degamo, 56 years old is the latest target in the Philippines' long history of attacks on politicians, and at least the third to be shot since last year's local elections.

The Supreme Court last month declared him the rightful winner of the contest for the Negros Oriental governorship following a recount that unseated his local rival, who had previously been proclaimed the victor.

Degamo had also campaigned for Marcos in his own candidacy for president last year (2022).

Mamintal Adiong, governor of the southern province of Lanao del Sur, was shot and wounded in February 2023 in an attack that killed his driver and three police escorts.

That same month, the vice-mayor of the northern town of Aparri, Rommel Alameda, and five other people who were travelling with him were shot dead in a highway ambush.

In the bloodiest politically motivated ambush on record, the leaders of a powerful southern clan and about two dozen followers were sentenced to life in prison for a 2009 attack on supporters of a gubernatorial election rival in Maguindanao province.

The attack left 58 people dead, including the politician's wife and relatives, along with 32 journalists and media workers who were covering the race.

RUSSIAN MERCENARY BOSS SAYS VIDEO SHOWS HIS FIGHTERS NEAR CENTRE OF UKRAINE'S BAKHMUT

RUSSIAN MERCENARY BOSS SAYS VIDEO SHOWS HIS FIGHTERS NEAR CENTRE OF UKRAINE'S BAKHMUT

@Jackie San

THE FOUNDER OF RUSSIA'S WAGNER FORCE on Thursday, March 02, 2023 published a video showing his fighters in what he said was almost the centre of Bakhmut, the small Ukrainian city Wagner has been fighting to capture for months.

Wagner has spearheaded Russia's assault on Bakhmut, which had a pre-war population of 75,000, and has made steady but incremental progress around the city's outskirts in recent months, endangering Ukraine's supply lines.

In a post on Telegram, the press service of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner's founder, cited him as saying: " The lads are mucking about, shooting home video. They brought this from Bakhmut this morning, practically the centre of the city."

Reuters was not immediately able to geolocate the footage.

In the video, uniformed men are shown lifting a Wagner banner atop a semi-ruined multi-storey building. One of the men is shown dancing and holding a guitar, a reference to Wagner's informal nickname of "THE MUSICIANS".

Ukrainian forces were reported to be hanging on to their positions in Bakhmut early on Thursday, but to be under constant attack from Russian troops seeking to claim their first major victory for more than half a year.

INDONESIAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE PLEDGES TO DELIVER JOKOWI'S NEW CAPITAL IF ELECTED

INDONESIAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE PLEDGES TO DELIVER JOKOWI'S NEW CAPITAL IF ELECTED

@Jackie San

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - One of Indonesia's leading presidential candidates on Thursday, March 02, 2023 pledges to continue President Joko Widodo's flagship $32 billion new capital city if he wins a 2024 election, giving a boost for an ambitious project hit by delays and investor uncertainty.

Anies Basweden, a popular former Jakarta governor who is backed by three political parties, said a law had been passed by parliament to build Nusantara, as the new capital is known, so whoever wins the presidency must see it through.

" The new capital city is not only an idea. This has become a law and all of us, when being inaugurated for any position, our vow is to implement the law," Anies said at a public event when asked about his commitment to the new capital on Borneo Island.

Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, announced the project in 2019, arguing that Jakarta was congested and sinking.

But Nusantara has faced some problems, including delays due to the pandemic and doubt among some investors that Jokowi's successor would stick with it.

The Indonesian Centre for Strategic and International Studies last year found nearly 59% of 170 experts it interviewed were unsure Nusantara would materialise, citing uncertainty about funding and management.

Jokowi hopes to rely mainly on private funding for the capital, with 20% from state coffers.

Anies has been ranked in the top three for all major polls on preferred presidential candidates in the past year. Registration for candidates has yet to open.

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranovwo was the frontrunner according to a survey by pollster Litbang Kompas conducted in January, backed by 25.3% of the 1,202 respondents.

Second was Jokowi's defense minister, Prabowo Subianto, with 18.1% and Anies third on 13.1%.

GENERAL SAYS ABOUT IRAN STILL SEEKING TO KILL TRUMP

GENERAL SAYS ABOUT IRAN STILL SEEKING TO KILL TRUMP

@Jackie San

TEHRAN (FEBRUARY 25, 2023) :An Iranian general warned his country is still seeking to kill former United States President Donald Trump and his secretary of state Mike Pompeo in revenge for assassinating top commander Qasem Soleimani.

Tehran has repeatedly vowed to avenge the killing of Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' foreign operations, in a United States drone strike on Baghdad airport in January 2020.

" We hope we can kill Trump, Pompeo, (former United States general Kenneth), McKenzie and the military commanders who gave the order" to kill Soleimani, General Amirali Hajizadeh, the Guard's aerospace unit commander, said on television late Friday.

Trump had ordered the strike in response to a number of attacks on United States interests in Iraq that his administration blamed on Iran.

Days laer, Iran retaliated by firing missiles at a United States airbase in Iraq that housed United States troops. None were killed, but Washington said dozens suffered traumatic brain damage.

The United States and its allies have repeatedly expressed concerns about Iran's ballistic missile programme as well as its "DESTABILISING" role in the Middle East.

In his televised remarks, Hajizadeh said Iran was " NOW ABLE TO HIT AMERICAN SHIPS AT A DISTANCE OF 2,000 KILOMETRES (1,243 miles)".

" We have set this limit of 2,000 kilometres out of respect for the Europeans and we hope that the Europeans show themselves worthy of this respect," the Iranian general said.

Today, Iranian state television aired video of what it said was a newly unveiled "PAVEH CRUISE MISSILE WITH A RANGE OF 1,650 KILOMETRES (1,025 MILES)" developed by the Guards.

The official broadcaster reported on Friday that Iran was likely to provide Syria with the 15-Khordad surface-to-air missile system to "REINFORCE" its defensive capabilities.

PROPERTY DEBT CRISIS DEEPENS AS MAJOR DEVELOPER DELAYS BOND PAYMENT : VIETNAM

PROPERTY DEBT CRISIS DEEPENS AS MAJOR DEVELOPER DELAYS BOND PAYMENT : VIETNAM

@Jackie San

HANOI, VIETNAM (FEBRUARY 25, 2023): Vietnam's property debt crisis is intensifying as the country's second-largest developer joined the ranks of peers seeking debt extension after failing to repay a bond on time.

No Va Land Investment Group said earlier this week it will delay repayment of a 1 trillion dong ($42 million) note originally due on February 12, 2023 and asked holders for an extension or to convert the principal into its real estate products. The developer said it's seeking to work out a way within two (2) months for it to pay off the debt.

Better known as Novaland, the company is a prominent addition to an expanding group of Vietnamese companies tardy with their bond payments. Fifty-four companies- many of them in the real estate sector - were late as of January 31, 2023 up from six the month before, the Hanoi Stock Exchange said.

That suggests the cash crunch in the real estate sector is worsening after an anti-graft campaign spooked investors and new bond issuance plunged. With billions of dollars of bonds due this year, the industry's worst triggering a broader crisis for the nation's banking sector and economy.

"We believe this is just the beginning, and expect more debt extensions, restructurings and defaults," said Xavier Jean, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings. " We are also watching for contagion effect" that could spill over to companies beyond the construction sector, he said.

The Southeast Asian nation's property crisis started last year after officials issued a crackdown on corporate bond issuance following allegations of illegal activities, setting off a series of actions to rectify the property market. That included high-level arrests, inspections of brokerages tied to canceled issuances and an overhaul of the bond industry.

Real estate firms have 130 trillion dong of bonds maturing this year (2023), according to a trade ministry publication last week citing estimates by the Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Assocation.

Prior to Novaland's latest announcement, industry peers Tan Hoang Minch Group, van Thinh Phat Holdings Group and Sunshine Group had also sought to extend bond payment deadlines, according to Hanoi Stock Exchange data.

Novaland's shares fell 1.7% on Thursday, after plunging 6.6% the previous day.

Vietnam's Ministry of Finance proposed a decree amendment that would let companies extend corporate bond maturities by as long as two years to ease a funding shortage, a local newspaper reported in December. The draft revision, which has been submitted to the government, also includes allowing bond principal and interest to be converted into loans or other assets, according to the trade ministry's publication last week.

" What will happen next - and whether cross default contagion is to occur or not - will remain as the big concern to the market right now, " according to an investor note by SSI Securities Corp. Wednesday.

" What is a must right now is for the issuer to convene a bondholder's meeting to discuss solutions, including redemption, further guarantees, or a waiver of default."

QUAKE SURVIVORS STRUGGLE TO FIND SHELTER NEARLY THREE WEEKS ON - TURKEY

QUAKE SURVIVORS STRUGGLE TO FIND SHELTER NEARLY THREE WEEKS ON - TURKEY

@Jackie San

ANTAKYA, TURKEY : Omran Alswed and his family are still living in makeshift shelters almost three (3) weeks after the massive earthquake in southern Turkey, having been unable to find a place in an official camp.

Nearly two (2) million people left homeless by the quake are being housed in tents, container homes and other facilities in and beyond the region, according to Turkish authorities, but Alswed, 25 years old, said his extended family had not yet benefitted.

" Our houses are heavily damaged so we have taken shelter here, in a garden in our neighbourhood, " said Alswed, who studied nursing at Siirt University in southeast Turkey.

" The biggest issue is tents. It has been 19 days and we are yet to receive a single tent. We also applied to move into a tent camp but they said the ones nearby are full," he said at a makeshift settlement near the city of Antakya.

Alswed was among 60 Syrians, including at least a dozen young children, staying beside the road to Reyhanli town in 11 shelters composed of plastic sheeting, blankets, bricks and chunks of concrete from damaged buildings.

He was speaking after Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said overnight that the death toll in Turkey had risen to 44,218, bringing the total including Syria to 50,000.

AFAD said over 335,000 tents have been erected in the quake zone in Turkey and container home settlements were being established at 130 locations. Nearly 530,000 people have also been evacuated from the quake zone.

Alswed said he had been calling official phone numbers and talked to AFAD and other said groups about their situation, including asking for tents, while smaller NGOs have brought canned food, toilet paper and some toys for the children.

Outside Antakya, on the road to the town of Kirikhan, a woman named Ayse was staying in a greenhouse by her damaged home after authorities told her there were no tents available.

" We didn't get a tent, but there are others in worse conditions than us and I want them to get them first. At least we have a greenhouse. I took my children and brought them here," she said, adding that her husband had pulled a sofa out of the house for the children to sleep on.

" We've got supplies, but they said for the moment there is no tent. We are waiting."
