FARM MINISTER RESIGNS OVER RICE COMMENTS; KOIZUMI TO REPLACE HIM - TOKYO JAPAN

FARM MINISTER RESIGNS OVER RICE COMMENTS; KOIZUMI TO REPLACE HIM - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Farm minister Taku Eto resigned Wednesday after facing backlash over a declaration that he does not buy rice due to being gifted so much by supporters, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba whose popularity has already been shaken by cost-of-living issues, especially the soaring price of rice.

Ishiba replaced Eto with Shinjiro Koizumi, 44, government sources said, installing the popular former environment minister who unsuccessfully ran in the Liberal Democratic Party's presidential election last year.

Speaking to reporters after he met with Ishiba, Koizumi said he will give priority to easing public worries about surging rice prices.

After accepting Eto's resignation, Ishiba acknowledged his own responsibility as the person who handpicked him and allowed him to stay on even as objections mounted over the comments, saying, "I will accept all criticism."

Eto, 64, tendered his resignation at the prime minister's office, hours before Ishiba is set to face off in parliament with leaders of the country's opposition parties, who had united in their calls for Eto's resignation.

The latest scandal comes as Ishiba prepares for a House of Councillors election this summer, a must-win race for the ruling coalition after they lost control of the more powerful House of Representatives last year.

Eto is the first of Ishiba's cabinet members to leave office for reasons other than having lost a parliamentary seat in the general election in October.

"I asked myself whether it is appropriate for me to stay at the helm (of the ministry) at a critical time for rice prices, and I concluded that it is not," Eto told reporters at the prime minister's office after tendering his resignation.

"Once again, I apologize to the people for making extremely inappropriate comments as minister when they are struggling with surging rice prices," he said.

Eto's gaffe came shortly after the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries decided to release additional rice from its emergency stockpiles until July. The move was made in the hope of bringing down rice prices, which have doubled from a year earlier.

Eto is known as one of the leading experts on agricultural policy in the ruling party, and served as farm minister for a year from 2019 under then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Opinion polls have shown the public's increasing dissatisfaction with how the government has addressed the recent spike in rice prices. The issue has been exacerbated as many households have not seen wage growth keep pace with rampant inflation.

Speaking at a fundraising event organized by his party's local chapter on Sunday, Eto said, "I'm not buying rice. Thanks to my supporters giving me plenty of it, I have so much of it in my house that I could sell it."

He later explained he wanted to get a laugh from the audience but went "too far," causing opposition lawmakers to immediately question his suitability for the ministry.

Japan's major opposition parties agreed Tuesday to jointly urge Eto to resign, threatening a no-confidence motion against him. Criticism also grew within the ruling coalition, with some senior members viewing his departure as inevitable.

Koizumi, the likely new farm minister, lost to Ishiba in the LDP's presidential election but was one of the favorites in opinion polls to become a future Japanese leader.

The debacle came at a time when a Kyodo News poll showed Ishiba's approval rating at its lowest level since he took office last October, underscoring how he has so far failed to restore public trust, which was soured by a series of political funds scandals in the LDP.

JAPANESE COUPLE FIGHTS BURGLARS WITH BUG SPRAY, GOLF CLUB AS THEY GAS, SMASH GETAWAY CAR - TOKYO JAPAN

JAPANESE COUPLE FIGHTS BURGLARS WITH BUG SPRAY, GOLF CLUB AS THEY GAS, SMASH GETAWAY CAR - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

The owners of the Ginpoudou pawnshop in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, have a lot of cats. There’s even an illustration of a cat, wearing a loupe/jeweler’s lens and examining a ring, painted on the front of the store.

So when the 63-year-old owner, who lives on the building’s second floor, heard noises coming from downstairs a little after 2 in the morning on May 16, he figured some of his feline friends were having a spat of some kind. When he went to check on what exactly was going on, though, he discovered that two men were robbing the place, forcibly raising the storefront shutter and smashing their way through the glass door with a crowbar, then stuffing items from the showcase into a sack.

Grabbing a golf club, the owner confronted the pair, chasing them as they retreated to their car, which they’d parked out front. “I couldn’t let them get away, so I gave them a bit of a fight,” says the owner, but he wasn’t just swinging at the robbers, but at the windshield of their getaway vehicle. “I started hitting the windshield so it would crack and they wouldn’t be able to see out of it. I also squared off against the guy with the crowbar.”

Eventually both of the robbers took refuge inside their car, but with the owner still raining blows on the windshield with his iron, they seemingly started to panic, and couldn’t get the car started quickly. Their delay in making an escape proved costly, because it gave enough time for a second person to join the shop owner’s counterattack: his wife, who rushed the car while spraying a can of insecticide through the open driver’s-side window at the robbers inside.

The robbers responded to the unexpected gas attack by raising the window. Unfortunately for them, by this time the owner had done enough damage to their windshield that cracks going all the way through the glass had formed. “Let me have the can,” the owner said to his wife, and after she passed it to him he began to spray the insecticide through the openings he’d made. As the car continued to fill with gas, the robbers realized they weren’t going to be able to breathe, so they opened up the doors and fled on foot into the night, leaving their vehicle and their sack of would-be stolen goods behind.

Online reactions to the couple’s counterattack have been praising their quick-thinking, innovative tactics, and ferocity.

“You do NOT want to make that couple angry.”

“That’s one tough woman.”

“Some seriously speedy situational analysis by the wife.”

“It must have been a special kind of hell inside that car when it started filling with gas.”

“No need to hold back with bad guys like those two.”

“Spray them cockroaches!”

“They should make this into an insecticide commercial.”

“That’s the most satisfying ending to a video I’ve seen in a long while.”

“Well done, owner and wife!”

The shop owner suffered no direct injuries from the thieves, but did step on broken glass during the incident, which doctors say will take about two weeks to heal. Police apprehended one of the robbers, a 69-year-old man who has admitted to the charges, nearby soon after, and are searching for his accomplice, who’s said to be in his 50s. For his sake, hopefully the police find him before the owner and his wife do.

50 YEARS SINCE JUNKO TABEI BECAME FIRST WOMAN TO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST - PARIS

AFTER 50 YEARS SINCE JUNKO TABEI BECAME FIRST WOMAN TO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST - PARIS

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

On May 16, 1975, Japan's Junko Tabei became the first woman to climb to the top of Mount Everest.

Half a century later, the world's highest mountain is set to record its thousandth ascent by a woman.

Scaling the 8,849 meter-high peak has mainly been a male achievement.

By May 2025 women had reached the top 962 times, while men had got there 11,955 times, according to an AFP analysis of figures from the Himalayan Database.

When Tabei, who died in 2016 at the age of 77, reached the peak of Everest in 1975, 38 men had preceded her.

With her all-woman team, she had struggled to find sponsors for her expedition, often being told that they would be better off looking after their children.

"All men limit our likes and I do not want to be limited," Tabei wrote in her notebook upon her return.

Eleven days later, a Tibetan woman, Phantog, reached the peak from the opposite side. She believed she had got there first, only learning that she had been pipped at the post by Tabei after she completed her descent.

In her notebook, Tabei laid out her next objectives: climb K2, the world's second highest peak, and return to work for a scientific journal.

Since then, Everest has been climbed by 870 different women of 85 different nationalities, some having succeeded several times.

After Nepali climbers, the United States, India and China have sent the most men to the summit -- and sent 39 percent of the women.

The sherpas, the Nepali guides who accompany their clients up Everest, are almost all men.

Everest's home Nepal accounts for half of the ascents by men, but only nine percent of those by women: 90 ascents by 66 different women.

Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, who climbed in 2012, is currently the only woman to be a certified Nepali guide who received an international diploma in 2018.

"This is a challenging field, even more so if you are a girl. There were people who said this is not a girl's job, that I won't get work," she told AFP.

Before her, Pasang Lhamu in 1993 became the first Nepali woman to reach the top of Everest.

During her descent she remained back with a colleague who was suffering from altitude sickness and both died of exhaustion.

She became a national heroine and the trek from base camp at Everest today starts with an arch paying tribute to her.

Her successor Lhakpa Sherpa, the second Nepali woman to reach the summit in 2000, has since claimed the female record for the number of ascents: by May she had done 10.

Thirteen years after Junko Tabei, New Zealand's Lydia Bradey became in 1988 the first woman to reach the summit without an oxygen bottle, a respiratory aid which compensates for the effects of altitude.

As she made the ascent on her own, the other members of her expedition returned to the Nepal capital Kathmandu, where they publicly cast doubt on her success.

Facing being thrown out for having taken another route than that allowed by her permit, Bradey decided not to claim her achievement at the Nepali tourism ministry, but it was recognized years later.

When women and men are taken together, only 229 ascents, or less than one percent, succeeded without oxygen.

Bradey and only nine other women are on the list.

"This is a different ball game from climbing with supplemental oxygen. Maybe women are a little bit more aware of that," Germany's Billi Bierling, the director of the Himalayan Database which tracks expeditions to the top of Everest, told AFP.

"Women are often better prepared and when it comes to taking risks on the mountain, they're probably a little bit more conservative. So maybe a woman by herself says, 'you know what, this is too dangerous, I go down', whereas a male climber, would still go," the woman who climbed Everest in 2009 said.

So while only 66 percent of the hundred or so women who make the attempt every year succeed, against 75 percent for men, their fatality rate is lower: a woman dies on the slopes of Everest every 153 tries, a man every 70 attempts.

While women are still in a minority at the top of Everest, the ratio of women getting there is increasing: they were one to 16 men in the 2000s, and one to 10 two decades later.

"I have now so many friends who are unmarried and without children, and also they earn more money, so they can go out and go to 8,000 peaks," Bierling said.

The cost of the ascent varies from $45,000 to $200,000.

NISSAN CONSIDERS CLOSING 2 KANAGAWA PLANTS IN RESTRUCTING PUSH - TOKYO JAPAN

NISSAN CONSIDERS CLOSING 2 KANAGAWA PLANTS IN RESTRUCTING PUSH - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Nissan Motor Co is considering closing two plants in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, as part of its restructuring plans, a company source said Saturday.

Japan's third-biggest automaker by volume said earlier this week it will shut seven vehicle plants and cut 20,000 jobs globally after logging a net loss of 670.90 billion yen for fiscal 2024.

The two plants are Nissan's main Oppama plant, where the company pioneered electric vehicle production, and the Shonan plant of its unit Nissan Shatai Co, which builds commercial vehicles. Together, the two plants make up about 30 percent of Nissan's domestic production capacity.

Whether the closures will go ahead remains uncertain, however, as the company has yet to hold talks with labor unions, parts makers or municipalities hosting the plants, the source said.

As for its overseas operations, Nissan has already announced it will close one plant in India and another in Argentina.

At a press conference on Tuesday to announce its financial results, Nissan, which has been grappling with poor sales in the United States and China, said it will reduce its total workforce by around 15 percent. It will also reduce its vehicle plants from 17 to 10 by fiscal 2027.

It also said it plans to shrink global output capacity, excluding China, by 30 percent to 2.5 million units by fiscal 2027, with the expectation that the cost-cutting measures will help it return to profitability by fiscal 2026.

LAWAS SARAWAK TO HOST INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL THIS MAY 22 - 25, 2025 - SARAWAK MALAYSIA

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

MIRI (May 15, 2025): Lawas town will host its inaugural International Dragon Boat and Cultural Festival from May 22 to 25, an event anticipated to attract large crowds of both locals and tourists.

Organising chairman Liaw Cheng Heng announced that the festival will be a multifaceted cultural celebration featuring dragon boat races, traditional folk dance performances by 25 ethnic groups, and a vibrant food fair.

The highlight of the four-day programme will be the exciting dragon boat competition featuring 28 teams from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and the Federal Territory of Labuan, said Liaw.

“This festival brings together cultural expression, sport, and food festivals in one major event,” he said in the statement.

Organised by the Lawas Chinese Cultural Welfare and Expedition Association, the event will also include stage performances by both local and foreign artistes, as well as exhibitions and sales of local food, handicrafts, and daily essentials by small-scale entrepreneurs and hawkers.

Liaw emphasised that the festival aims to promote tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage, while also fostering unity and cooperation through traditional sporting events such as dragon boat racing.

“The event will significantly benefit the local economy by creating platforms for entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products and services from across the region and beyond,” he added.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan is expected to officiate the festival’s opening ceremony.

The event is also supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, as well as various government agencies and local authorities in Lawas.

CHINESE FIGHTER JET HAS NEAR MISS WITH SELF-DEFENCE FORCE PATROL PLANE - JAPAN GOVERNMENT

CHINESE FIGHTER JET HAS NEAR MISS WITH SELF-DEFENCE FORCE PATROL PLANE - JAPAN GOVERNMENT

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

A Chinese military aircraft had a near miss with a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane over the high seas in the Pacific, flying just 45 meters away after taking off from a moving aircraft carrier, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

China's J-15 warplane from the aircraft carrier Shandong made other dangerous maneuvers on Saturday and Sunday, such as passing in front of an MSDF P-3C aircraft at the same altitude and with a distance of about 900 meters between the planes, the ministry said, adding that the government lodged a protest with China and demanded an end to such flights.

Although there was no damage to the Japanese plane or injuries among its crew, Japan "expressed serious concerns" to China since "these abnormal approaches by a Chinese military plane may cause an accidental collision," the ministry said.

The announcement came after the ministry said Monday it has confirmed for the first time two Chinese aircraft carriers, the Shandong and the Liaoning, operating at the same time in the Pacific last weekend, making Tokyo more vigilant against Beijing's maritime assertiveness.

The Shandong was sailing through waters 550 kilometers southeast of Miyako Island in the southern prefecture of Okinawa on Saturday, and two days later conducted takeoff and landing drills involving its fighter jets and helicopters north of Japan's southernmost Okinotori Island within Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Meanwhile, the Liaoning was seen in waters about 300 km southwest of the easternmost island of Minamitori on Saturday in Japan's EEZ, before moving southwest outside the EEZ and conducting similar takeoff and landing exercises on Sunday.

The Liaoning was observed beyond what is known as the "second island chain" stretching from Japan's Izu Islands to Guam, a Japanese government official said. China considers the chain its defense line.

KUCHING (May 15, 2025): A search and rescue (SAR) operation is set to resume this morning for a four-wheel drive vehicle that plunged into the Sarawak River near the Tun Salahuddin Bridge here last night.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said oil believed to be from the submerged vehicle had surfaced.

This will help responders to identify where the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) should focus their dives.

The incident was reported at 10.07pm last night.

A team from the Tabuan Jaya fire station arrived at the scene four minutes later.

A witness told Bomba that the vehicle had been parked facing the river for about 30 minutes before it suddenly began moving and rolled towards the water.

“It was initially caught on the bridge’s metal frame briefly before falling into the river.

“The make of the vehicle and the number of victims have yet to be identified,” said a Bomba spokesperson in a statement.

As of 1.34am today, PPDA had conducted two dives at an estimated depth of 5.7 metres but found no trace of the vehicle or any victims.

The operation was called off early this morning.

2 INJURED IN WRONG-WAY CRASH; LATEST IN RECENT SPATE OF ACCIDENTS - GIFU JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

GIFUTwo vehicles collided head-on Wednesday in an outbound lane of an expressway in Gifu Prefecture, injuring the two drivers after one entered the lane going the wrong way, police said, the latest in a spate of similar incidents nationwide.

The accident occurred inside the Enasan Tunnel on the Chuo Expressway, which connects the capital with cities in central Japan, in a section where lane changes are prohibited, police said.

A man in his 90s, the one who was driving in the wrong direction, and the other driver, a man in his 40s, were taken to hospital following the collision. Both are believed to have sustained minor injuries, according to the police.

The accident led to the temporary closure of a part of the expressway.

In recent years, a series of accidents caused by wrong-way driving has occurred across the country. About 200 cases of vehicles traveling in the wrong direction are reported annually, according to the transport ministry.

In April, a multi-vehicle collision occurred after a driver traveled the wrong way on an expressway in eastern Japan, killing three people and injuring more than 10 others.

The following month, four people were injured in an accident after a driver stopped to avoid a car traveling the wrong way on an expressway in central Japan.
