SEOUL PROVE NORTH KOREA FIRES 2 BALLISTIC MISSILES

SEOUL (March 14, 2023): North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles Tuesday, Seoul said, Pyongyang’s second launch in three days and the first since South Korea and the United States began their largest joint military drills in five years.

 

Washington and Seoul have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military and nuclear threats from the North, which has conducted a series of increasingly provocative banned weapons tests in recent months.

“Our military detected two short-range ballistic missiles fired towards the East Sea from Jangyon area in South Hwanghae province from 0741 (2241 GMT) to 0751,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

“Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional launches, while maintaining a full readiness posture through close cooperation between South Korea and the United States.”

 

The launch comes just days after Pyongyang fired two “strategic cruise missiles” from a submarine in an apparent protest over the US-South Korea drills.

Known as Freedom Shield, the drills started Monday and will run for 10 days.

In a rare move, Seoul’s military this month revealed that the two allies’ special forces were staging military exercises dubbed “Teak Knife” — which involve simulating precision strikes on key facilities in North Korea — ahead of Freedom Shield.

 

The Freedom Shield exercises focus on the “changing security environment” due to North Korea’s redoubled aggression, the allies have said.

They will “involve wartime procedures to repel potential North Korean attacks and conduct a stabilisation campaign in the North”, the South Korean military said previously.

It emphasised that the exercise was a “defensive one based on a combined operational plan”.

 

But North Korea views all such drills as rehearsals for invasion and has repeatedly warned it would take “overwhelming” action in response.

Last year, North Korea declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power and launched a record-breaking number of missiles.

 

Leader Kim Jong Un earlier this month ordered his military to intensify drills to prepare for a “real war”.

Leif Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, said while Pyongyang routinely justified its missile tests by pointing to the South’s military exercises, they also served a domestic purpose.

“This is largely about the Kim regime not wanting to look weak as it struggles economically at home while South Korea succeeds at strengthening its conventional firepower and security partnerships,” he told AFP.

“As a result, further shows of force can be expected from Pyongyang.”

Washington has repeatedly restated its “ironclad” commitment to defending South Korea, including using the “full range of its military capabilities, including nuclear”.

South Korea, for its part, is eager to reassure its increasingly nervous public about the US commitment to so-called extended deterrence, in which Washington’s military assets, including nuclear weapons, serve to prevent attacks on allies.

Analysts previously said North Korea would likely use the drills as an excuse to carry out more missile launches and perhaps even a nuclear test.

“More missile launches with variations in style and scope should be expected, with even a nuclear test. More acts of intimidation from North Korea should not come as a surprise,” said Chun In-bum, a retired South Korean army general.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (MARCH 15, 2023) :First he broke lockdown low. Then he was fined for not wearing a car seatbelt. Now Britain's prime minister is again in trouble with the police - because of his dog.

 

Rishi Sunak and his family were filmed walking Nova the Labrador in central London's Hyde Park, where signs clearly state that all dogs must be kept on leads to avoid worrying the wildlife.

 

In the clip posted on TikTok, Nova is seen roaming freely, drawing a rebuke from the Metropolitan Police.

 

" An officer, who was present at the time, spoke to a woman and reminded her of the rules, " a police statement said Tuesday, apparently referring to Sunak's wife Akshata Murty.

 

" The dog was put back on the lead," it said.

 

Sunak's spokesman declined to comment.

 

Downing Street has likewise refused to comment on reports this week that the uber-wealthy Sunak has had the electricity network upgraded at his Yorkshire mansion in northern England, to power his heated swimming pool.

 

The prime minister has had several awkward encounters with the public, as he battles to counter perceptions that he is too rich to connect with voters amid a cost-of-living crisis in Britain.

 

And while projecting a more wholesome image than predecessor Boris Johnson, Sunak is making a habit of drawing untoward attention from the police.

 

He was fined while serving as Johnson's finance minister for attending a Downing Street party in June 2020 that violated the government's COVID-19 rules on social distancing.

 

Johnson became the first United Kingdom premier to be fined by police, for the same party. But Sunak got his own prime ministerial fine in January 2023.

 

Filming a social media video, he was penalised for failing to wear a seatbelt in a moving car. Sunak apologised for an "ERROR OF JUDGEMENT".

WOMAN GETS HAND STUCK IN MIXER - SIBU

SIBU, SARAWAK (MARCH 04, 2023) : A woman got her right hand stuck in a mixer machine during work at a commercial centre at Sibujaya here on Friday everning.

 

The Fire and Rescue (BOMBA) operations centre in a statement said they received a distress call at 1640 pm and a rescue team from the Sibujaya fire station was deployed to the scene.

 

Upon their arrival, BOMBA personnel saw that her right hand was stuck in the mixer machine and they quickly called an ambulance.

 

The rescue team they unplugged the machine and extracted the mixer from the main machine.

 

She was they brought to the hospital together with the mixer.

 

At the Sibu Hospital Emergency and Trauma Department, personnel from the Sungai Merah fire station were called in to assist with releasing her hand from the mixer.

 

The operation was a success and the victim was handed over to the hospital for further action.

MANILA, PHILIPPINE (MARCH 04, 2023): A provincial governor in the central Philippines and five other people were shot dead by unknown gunmen today, his widow said, in the latest attack against local officials. 

Local police said six suspects carrying rifles and dressed in uniforms similar to those worn by the armed services entered the governor's home in Pamplona town and opened fire.

Roel Degomo, governor of Negros Oriental province, and five others were killed in the shooting, his widow said.

 

" Governor Degamo did not deserve that kind of death. He was serving his constituents on a Saturday," Janice Degamo, who is also the mayor of Pamplona, said in a video posted on Facebook.

 

President Ferdinand Marcos condemned what he described as the "ASSASSSINATION" of his political ally and warned the perpetrators to "SURRENDER NOW IT WILL BE YOUR BEST OPTION".

 

" My government will not rest until we have brought the perpetrators of this dastradly and heinous crime to justice," Marcos added.

 

The condition of four other people who were shot in the incident was not disclosed.

 

The politician was distributing aid to constituents when he was shot, provincial police spokesman Kym Lopez told AFP.

 

Police said they were searching for 10 suspects, including the six gunmen, who fled the scene in two SUVs and a pickup truck before abandoning the vehicles in a nearby city.

 

MARCOS ALLY

Degamo, 56 years old is the latest target in the Philippines' long history of attacks on politicians, and at least the third to be shot since last year's local elections.

The Supreme Court last month declared him the rightful winner of the contest for the Negros Oriental governorship following a recount that unseated his local rival, who had previously been proclaimed the victor.

Degamo had also campaigned for Marcos in his own candidacy for president last year (2022).

Mamintal Adiong, governor of the southern province of Lanao del Sur, was shot and wounded in February 2023 in an attack that killed his driver and three police escorts.

That same month, the vice-mayor of the northern town of Aparri, Rommel Alameda, and five other people who were travelling with him were shot dead in a highway ambush.

In the bloodiest politically motivated ambush on record, the leaders of a powerful southern clan and about two dozen followers were sentenced to life in prison for a 2009 attack on supporters of a gubernatorial election rival in Maguindanao province.

The attack left 58 people dead, including the politician's wife and relatives, along with 32 journalists and media workers who were covering the race.

THE FOUNDER OF RUSSIA'S WAGNER FORCE on Thursday, March 02, 2023 published a video showing his fighters in what he said was almost the centre of Bakhmut, the small Ukrainian city Wagner has been fighting to capture for months.

 

Wagner has spearheaded Russia's assault on Bakhmut, which had a pre-war population of 75,000, and has made steady but incremental progress around the city's outskirts in recent months, endangering Ukraine's supply lines.

 

In a post on Telegram, the press service of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner's founder, cited him as saying: " The lads are mucking about, shooting home video. They brought this from Bakhmut this morning, practically the centre of the city."

 

Reuters was not immediately able to geolocate the footage.

 

In the video, uniformed men are shown lifting a Wagner banner atop a semi-ruined multi-storey building. One of the men is shown dancing and holding a guitar, a reference to Wagner's informal nickname of "THE MUSICIANS". 

Ukrainian forces were reported to be hanging on to their positions in Bakhmut early on Thursday, but to be under constant attack from Russian troops seeking to claim their first major victory for more than half a year.
