OVER KORAN BURNINGS TURKEY SUMMONS DANISH ENVOY

OVER KORAN BURNINGS TURKEY SUMMONS DANISH ENVOY

@Jackie San

ISTANBUL : Turkey summoned Denmark's ambassador on Friday to condemn Copenhagen for allowing a far-right extremist to burn Korans over Ankara's refusal to let Sweden and Finland join NATO.

Anti-Islam activist Rasmus Paludan, a Danish-Swedish dual national, first burnt a copy of the Muslim holy book near a mosque in the Danish capital and then a second copy outside the Turkish embassy.

A decision by Swedish police to allow Paludan to stage a similar protest in Stockholm prompted Turkey to postpone planned NATO accession talks with Sweden and Finland.

The United States and French embassies in Ankara warned their citizens of an increased risk of reprisal attacks in Turkey.

" In the wake of recent Quran burning incidents in Europe, the United States government cautions its citizens of possible retaliatory attacks by terrorists against places of worship in Turkey, " said the United States embassy.

" Terrorists could attack their with little or no warning, targeting places of worship or places Westerners frequent," the embassy added, urging people to stay alert and avoid crowds.

The French embassy sent an email telling its citizens in Turkey to be "HIGHLY VIGILANT" and underlined the United States warnings.

A Turkish diplomatic source said the Danish ambassador was summoned to protest at his country's "UNACCEPTABLE" attitude towards Paludan's actions.

" We strongly condemn the decision to grant permission fort this provocative act, which clearly constitutes a hate crime, "the Turkish diplomatic source told reporters.

- 'Open Democracy' - Danish Foregin Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen confirmed the envoy had been summoned He said Copenhagen enjoyed " GOOD RELATIONS WITH ANKARA - AND THIS DOESN'T CHANGE THAT".

" Our job is to explain to Turkey the conditions that prevail in Denmark with our open democracy, and make them understand that there is a difference between Denmark as a country -  our people as a whole - and individuals who hold a wide range of views," he said.

Paludan vowed on Friday to stage weekly actions involving the Koran until Turkey approves Sweden and Finland's NATO membership.

Swedish leaders have strongly condemned Paludan's action but defended their country's broad acceptance of free speech.

Last year 2022, Finland and Sweden broke with decades of military non-alignment and applied to join NATO in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Bids to join NATO must be approved by all 30 members of the alliance.

Turkey and fellow NATO member Hungary are the only members that have yet to ratify the two (2) applications by votes in parliament.

Hungary's parliament is expected to ratify the two (2) bids next month (February 2023).

PAS "GREEN WAVE" LONG TIME COMING, SAYS THINK TANK IMAN RESEARCH

PAS "GREEN WAVE" LONG TIME COMING, SAYS THINK TANK IMAN RESEARCH

@Jackie San

KUALA LUMPUR (JANUARY 20, 2023) : The so-called "GREEN WAVE" used to describe PAS' gains in the 15th General Election was not a drastic phenomenon and was a result of steady momentum over the years, Iman Research said in its study.

The think tank in its study titled "ELECTION SENTIMENTS ANALYSIS OF MALAYSIA'S 15TH GENERAL ELECTION" released on January 19, 2023, said the Islamist party benefited from reaching out to new, young voters and also from the lack of resistance from Pakatan Harapan (PH).

" The results in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu where PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN) captured most of the seats could not have been just a coincidence. As early as September [2022], PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang stated that they are targeting Malay-Muslim youth both male and female who are 'jahil' about Islam and let alone on politics, to vote for PAS," the report said, using the word meaning "IGNORANT".

" In fact, going back to GE14, we could already see the gains by PAS in the East Coast-Northern belt of Peninsular Malaysia. This so-called 'GREEN WAVE' started back then, and with the lack of presence of PH in this region, and the lack of key PH figures where most of them are based in the West Coast and urban areas, PAS and by extension PN emerged as a viable alternative to BN."

It also pointed out how PAS and PN benefited from Malay-Muslim issues dominating the election, resulting in at least 10 political parties promoting Malay nationalism during campaigning.

" With newer Malay-Muslim-based parties getting involved in the general election, championing Malay-Muslim issues, the political rhetoric has been skewed further to the right and becoming more conservative and identity-based.

" Each party is projecting themselves as being morally more superior than the other, while accusing their rivals as being morally-corrupt. And as we got into the second week of campaigning, there have been less talks about the party manifestos in the "CERAMAH", but issues on morality have taken centre stage," it said.

The think tank also reported that social media played a role in amplifying the Malay nationalism narrative, particularly on TikTok by PN which analysts have since believed was effective towards first-time voters.

Iman Research highlighted that the effect was obvious especially when PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin falsely accused PH of conspiring with the Jews and Christians to convert Malay-Muslims in Malaysia.

In GE15, PAS won 27 seats by contesting under PN's logo, with 22 more as part of clean sweeps in Kelantan and Terengganu under its own logo.

Iman Research focuses on the domains of protective security, peacebuilding and sustainable development, with experts in sectors of preventing and countering violent extremism, ethnoreligious issues, social policy and community resilience.

The think tank conducted the latest research through news reports and interviews nationwide prior to and during the GE15 campaigning period.

PETROS SARAWAK WINS PSCs FOR TWO OFFSHORE CLUSTERS

PETROS SARAWAK WINS PSCs FOR TWO OFFSHORE CLUSTERS

@Jackie San

KUCHING, SARAWAK (JANUARY 18, 2023) : Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) has awarded production sharing contracts (PSC) to Petroleum Sarawak Exploration and Production (PSEP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS), Dialog Resources Sdn Bhd (Dialog), and Dagang NeXchange Bhd (DneX), for two clusters offshore Sarawak.

According to a filing on Bursa Malaysia, Dialog will take on 70 per cent participating interest including the operatorship of the Baram Junior cluster small field asset PSC while PSEP will take on the remaining 30 per cent participating interest.

The 14 years contract comes with a two-year pre-development phase that allows Dialog and PSEP to finalise the field development plan and move into a two-year development phase with first commersial production expected by the end of the phase.

The production phase will continue for the remaining 10 years or up to the expiry of the contract, whichever is earlier.

As for Petros' contract with DNeX, DNeX's subsidiary, Ping Petroleum Sdn Bhd (PPSB), signed PSCs with Petronas for the development and production of oil and gas resources in the A Cluster located 290 km off the coast of Miri, Sarawak, offshore Malaysia.

PPSB is the operator of the A Cluster with 70 per cent participating interest, while Petro's PSEP holds the remaining 30 per cent participating interest.

Petronas awarded the contracts following its Malaysia Bid Round 2022.

Meanwhile, on the earnings feasibility of the Baram Junior Cluster, the research arm of MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research) noted that the Baram Junior Cluster is located within the Western Baram Delta in offshore Miri, Sarawak.

It said that the block is known for complex structural geology, formed by paleoregressions of clastic sediments in a deltaic environment.

However, the complex structure opens to high opportunities for hydrocarbons traps in fault-dependent and stratigraphic closures, which make most of the proven discoveries in the area and its surrounding blocks.

" Additionally, the Baram Junior Cluster has the frontier potential for deep water plays. To date, the Sarawak Basin had produced over 160,000bpd of oil and 4 standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas, with an estimated unexplored prospect of 11 billions of barrels of oil equivalent (Bboe)worth of hydrocarbons.

" The Baram Province also has many more unexplored plays both onshore and offshore, hence, we believe the contract timeline of 14 years is fair and reasonable, " it explained.

However, it also cautioned that the Baram Junior Cluster contract comes with risks that include, but not limited to complex subsurface geology, availability of skilled workers, experts and materials, price volatility of raw materials, and changes in politics, economy and regulations.

" Nevertheless, we believe Dialog is well versed with upstream operations, in terms of exploration, appraisals, special technical services and asset management, hence has the capability to mitigate the risks to Baram Junior Cluster contract, " it opined.

All in, MIDF Research said:  " While the Baram Junior Cluster contract is still in its infant stages, we are positive of its development stages and despite the risks, we believe Dialog is capable of undergoing the phases for the Baram Junior Cluster."

MP CLAIMS ADDITIONAL KL-MIRI FLIGHTS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR STILL INSUFFICIENT TO BRING DOWN AIRFARES

MP CLAIMS ADDITIONAL KL-MIRI FLIGHTS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR STILL INSUFFICIENT TO BRING DOWN AIRFARES

@Jackie San

MIRI, SARAWAK (JANUARY 18, 2023) : More Kuala Lumpur to Miri flights are needed to lower airfares as they are still too expensive for those wishing to return here for Chinese New Year 2023, claimed Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.

While welcoming the additional flights for the festive season, he concurred with Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin that Sarawak needs more flights for the high-demand route.

" Despite some improvements since Transport Minister (Anthony Loke) announced fix rate flight tickets, we can still see that the ticket prices are relatively expensive, especially when the dates are near," he said.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak Youth Chief said although he does not have exact details on the increased number of flights or seats available, checks on airfares show higher prices during this period.

He said from the airline industry's pricing mechanism point of view, the only way to reduce airfares is by introducing more supply in the market.

On December 28, 2022 AirAsia announced one-way fixed fares from the peninsula to Sarawak at RM 199.00 and to Sabah at RM 249.00.

On January 16, 2023, lee said AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Firefly would provide 71 additional flights per day from the peninsula to Sarawak between January 18 and 21 January to allow Sarawakian to return home in time for Chinese New Year 2023.

With Malaysians having their first restriction-free Chinese New Year since 2020, Chiew also urged constituents to exercise care.

" We will all celebrate like pre-COVID-19 era, but still we would like to advice that COVID-19 is still around and some countries have experienced a spike in the number of positive cases, " he said.

He added it is vital to continue to maintain basic precaution methods such as wearing a mask in a crowded indoor environment and to wash hands frequently.

The Miri MP also appealed for greater vigilance on the road.

SHRIMPS BREEDER GETS 41 YEARS, 24 STROKES FOR RAPING DAUGHTER IN SABAH

SHRIMPS BREEDER GETS 41 YEARS, 24 STROKES FOR RAPING DAUGHTER IN SABAH

@Jackie San

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH (JANUARY 17, 2023) : A shrimps breeder will spend a total of 41 years behind bars and ordered to be whipped a total of 24 times by the Session Court here on Tuesday (January 17, 2023) for two counts of raping his teenage daughter last year.

Judge Elsie Primus imposed the sentences on the 46-year-old father of seven kids after he pleaded guilty to both his charges under Section 376 (3) of the Penal Code.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to 30 years and whipping, upon conviction.

The court also ordered the accused to be placed under police supervision for three years.

On the first count, the accused was jailed for 20 years from the date of his arrest plus 11 whippings for raping the 13-year-old victim at an unnumbered house in Kudat on May 07, 2022.

On the second count, he received another 21 years' imprisonment and ordered to be given 13 strokes of the cane for raping the same victim at the same place on June 09, 2022.

The court ordered both the jail sentences to run consecutively which means the accused has to serve all the total jail terms meted out on him.

The fact of the case stated that the victim had lodged a police report for the purpose of getting counseling as she did not want the same incident to happen again in future.

Following that report, the accused was arrested at his workplace on June 21, 2022.

The victim stated that she had been raped by the accused since she was five and the last time she was raped was on June 09, 2022.

Investigation revealed that the accused's wife is a security guard at a school and when his wife went to work, the accused would take the opportunity to rape the victim.

The victim did not tell anyone when she was first raped as at the age of five she did not know that the act of her farther towards her was wrong.

After years of being raped, the victim did try to fight but the accused told her not to tell anyone about his act.

The last time when she was raped she did not reject because she was already used to it. When the accused took off her pants, it meant that he wanted to rape her.

The victim is also suffering from trauma due to the incidents and lost her focus during learning sessions.
