GENEVA (December 26, 2023): World Health Organization staff visited Monday a Gaza hospital receiving casualties from deadly strikes on a refugee camp, hearing distressing stories of entire families killed and seeing dying children.

“WHO’s team heard harrowing accounts shared by health workers and victims of the suffering caused by the explosions,” the UN health agency chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X, formerly Twitter.

“One child had lost their whole family in the strike on the camp. A nurse at the hospital suffered the same loss,” he said.

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says that at least 70 people were killed in Israeli strikes late Sunday on three houses in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp.

AFP was unable to independently verify the toll.

The Israeli military said it was “reviewing the incident” and “committed to international law including taking feasible steps to minimise harm to civilians”.

Rows of victims’ bodies, shrouded in white bags, lined the ground at Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, ahead of a mass funeral.

The Al-Aqsa hospital staff had reported receiving around 100 casualties from the blasts, Tedros said.

“The hospital is taking in far more patients than its bed capacity and staff can handle,” he said.

“Many will not survive the wait,” he warned, insisting “this latest strike on a Gazan community shows just why we need a #CeasefireNOW”.

The war broke out when Hamas fighters launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 and killed about 1,140 people, mainly civilians, and seized 250 hostages, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Israel has responded with a relentless military campaign that has killed at least 20,670 people, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

– WHY? ‘UNACCEPTABLE SITUATION’ –

Sean Casey, a WHO Emergency Medical Teams coordinator who was on Monday’s mission to Al-Aqsa hospital, described doctors providing pain relief to a critically injured nine-year-old boy named Ahmed.

He “was being treated basically with sedation to ease his suffering as he dies”, Casey said in a video shot inside Al-Aqsa, seeming to fight back tears.

“He was crossing the street in front of the shelter where his family is staying and the building beside him blew up,” he said.

“He was hit by shrapnel, by rubble, his brain matter was exposed.

“There’s nothing anybody can do for him. Like so many cases here, there isn’t capacity to manage complex neurological cases, complex trauma cases,” he said.

WHO has warned that only nine of Gaza’s original 36 hospitals remain even partially functional.

“We as an international community should not accept that thousands upon thousands of people, children are being blown up, being killed while they’re crossing the street, while they’re sleeping in their beds,” Casey said.

“This is an unacceptable situation,” he said, demanding a ceasefire. “This has to stop.”

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA (December 27, 2023): A security guard accidentally fired a shot towards the floor at a financial institution on Jalan PJU 5/14, Kota Damansara in Petaling Jaya yesterday, shattering the entrance glass door.

However, Petaling Jaya district deputy police chief Supt M. Hussin Sollehuddin Zolkifly said there were no casualties in the incident.

He said on receiving information about the case at 10.13am from members of the public who heard a gunshot at the financial institution, a police team from the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters was assigned to the location.

“The investigation found that the security guard in his 50s, armed with a pump gun, fired a shot at the floor, which shattered the entrance glass door.

“Incidentally, there was no attempted robbery, and the security guard has tested negative for drugs. The investigation is underway under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960,” he said in a statement.

M. Hussin Sollehuddin urged the public with any information about the incident to contact the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters operations room at 03-79662222.

Police in Nagoya have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing a woman in her 20s in Nagoya on Tuesday. In addition, police believe the man also drowned a woman in her 30s, whose body was found in the bathtub at his apartment.

According to police, a man called 110 at around 11:20 a.m. and said he had killed someone at a karaoke parlor on the 7th floor of a building in Nakamura Ward, Kyodo News reported.

Police rushed to the scene and found the woman unconscious and bleeding from several knife wounds, in a private booth. She was taken to hospital where she died about an hour later. The suspect, Haruki Soga, who was still at the karaoke parlor, was arrested on the spot.

Police said Soga told them he had also killed a woman who lives with him by drowning her in the bathtub at his apartment about two kilometers away.

Police went to the apartment and found the woman submerged in the bathtub. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

TOKYO

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, headed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, replaced two of its executives Friday following a political fundraising scandal involving the party's largest faction.

Former education minister Kisaburo Tokai became new policy chief, succeeding Koichi Hagiuda who offered to resign last week when Kishida replaced four Cabinet members from the powerful faction, formerly led by slain Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Kishida accepted Hagiuda's resignation letter but asked him to remain in his post until the completion of a draft budget for the next fiscal year starting April.

Former Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada took over as Diet affairs chief, after Tsuyoshi Takagi quit amid allegations the faction failed to declare hundreds of millions of yen from fundraising parties in political funds reports.

Amid doubts about his ability to handle the scandal, Kishida has turned to experienced lawmakers, who are not members of an LDP faction, to fill the executive posts.

Tokai, who was elected to parliament in 1986, left the conservative party in 1993 to pursue political reform, returning in 1999.

Hamada became a lawmaker in 1993. Before that, he was a secretary to his father, the late House of Representatives lawmaker Koichi Hamada.

On Dec. 14, Kishida effectively sacked four ministers belonging to the LDP's biggest faction, including Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, who served as the top government spokesman, and trade minister Yasutoshi Nishimura.

In the LDP, Hagiuda, Takagi and Hiroshige Seko, secretary general of the party in the House of Councillors, who are key members of the Abe faction, have tendered their resignations. All of them are lawmakers with ministerial experience.

The departure of members of the Abe faction from government and party posts indicates that the influence of the 99-member group, which accounts for more than a quarter of the LDP's lawmakers, will weaken, political analysts said.

Friday's personnel change came days after prosecutors searched the offices of the Abe faction and another led by former LDP Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai, a party heavyweight who has kept his distance from the Kishida government.

The prosecutors suspect the Abe faction, called Seiwaken, or the Seiwa policy study group, returned a portion of fundraising party revenues that they raised from ticket sales, sources close to the matter said.

The amount is believed to have totaled around 500 million yen over five years through 2022, they added.

The Okinawa prefectural government decided Monday to ignore a court order to approve a modified plan for a key U.S. base relocation within the southern prefecture, paving the way for the state to take the unprecedented step of doing so by proxy.

Okinawa will appeal the high court ruling to the Supreme Court, a prefectural government official said. However, the local government cannot halt work at the contested relocation site unless the top court overturns the ruling.

The central government plans to approve the modified plan as early as Thursday, seeking to facilitate the transfer of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma from the densely-populated Ginowan amid staunch opposition from locals, who want the base to be moved out of the island prefecture entirely, a government source said.

After the approval, the first such move by the central government in place of a local government, the Okinawa bureau of the Defense Ministry is set to begin landfill work at a bay area of the relocation site, possibly on Jan 12, according to another government source.

Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki said in a statement that the high court ruling, issued on Wednesday, has "various problems" and that it was "difficult" for him to approve the modified plan when many locals are against the relocation of the Futenma base within the prefecture.

The governor has been hospitalized for lobar pneumonia but was holding online talks with prefectural government officials and lawyers on how to respond.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, meanwhile, told reporters in Tokyo that Tamaki's failure to comply with the judicial judgment was "regrettable."

The modifications involve reinforcing soft ground on the Oura Bay side of the coastal Henoko area in Nago, the relocation site for the Futenma base.

In a lawsuit brought by land minister Tetsuo Saito, the Fukuoka High Court's Naha branch on Wednesday ordered Tamaki to approve the modified plan within three working days of receiving a copy of the ruling, which was Monday.

The high court said Tamaki was violating the law by not approving the modified plan, having lost another lawsuit over its rejection in the Supreme Court in September.

The court said that Tamaki's refusal creates a challenge in rectifying the situation, indicating that the most viable solution would be the central government's approval by proxy.

Tamaki was elected to his second four-year term as Okinawa governor in 2022 on a campaign pledge to stop the transfer of the Futenma base to the Henoko area. Many people in Okinawa, which hosts the bulk of U.S. military facilities in Japan, have been frustrated with noise, crime and accidents linked to U.S. bases.

The central government has maintained that the relocation plan is "the only solution" for removing the dangers posed by the Futenma base, which is close to schools and homes, without undermining the perceived deterrence provided by the Japan-U.S. alliance.

Japan and the United States agreed on a relocation plan for the Futenma base in 1996, and Japan selected Henoko as the new site in 1999.
