CARLOS YULOIn his moment of triumph, Carlos Yulo couldn't help but remember the challenges that he endured and hurdled. 

Dubbed the "Golden Boy," Yulo had already won medals for the Philippines in several international competitions -- including the world championships. But a medal in the Olympics has eluded him; he famously struggled in the Tokyo Games, failing to qualify to the finals of the floor exercise before salvaging a fourth place finish in the vault. 

Three years on, Yulo has completed his redemption: the Filipino dynamo emerged as the gold medalist in the floor exercise in the Paris Olympics, executing his difficult routine near-flawlessly for a score of 15.000.

He sobbed when his victory was confirmed, weeping openly in front of the cameras even as -- half a world away -- his countrymen celebrated his milestone.

"Bumuhos po talaga 'yung luha ko, hindi ko na napigilan," Yulo told reporters after the medal ceremony at the Bercy Arena on Saturday night. "Kahit sobrang panget ng mukha ko sa screen, wala na akong pakialam po. Sobrang saya ko po."

Yulo's gold medal is the Philippines' first at the Paris Olympics, and only the second gold in the country's history. The first, of course, came from iconic weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who immediately celebrated Yulo's feat on Instagram. 

There were congratulations all over social media, with Filipinos hailing Yulo's history-making moment. He was commended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who said: "The entire country stands proud with you."

Yet amid his elation, Yulo said that what went through his mind was the long and difficult road that led to Olympic gold.

"Naalala ko lahat ng mga pagsubok ko sa buhay," he said. 

"Sobrang pasalamat po sa Panginoon na hindi niya ako pinabayaan, sa lahat ng mga challenges na binigay niya, nagpapasalamat ako. Hinubog at pinalakas Niya ako," he also said.

He expressed his gratitude to Cynthia Carrion, the head of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, and to his girlfriend, Chloe Anjeleigh San Jose, for their unending support. He was effusive in his thanks to the Filipino people, knowing that they stayed up late to watch him in qualifying. He was grateful for those who helped him in his journey.

And Yulo made it clear that he is also proud of himself, for the strength he showed throughout the whole process. The road to Paris had not been smooth -- Yulo memorably parted ways with his longtime coach, Munehiro Kugimiya, and there is reportedly a "rift" between him and some members of his family.

Yet he stood tall in the end -- the first male athlete from the Philippines to win Olympic gold.

"Sa sarili ko din, hindi ako sumuko. Hindi ako nagpatinag sa mga challenges," Yulo said. "Nagpapasalamat talaga ako kay Lord na pina-experience niya sa akin 'yung ganitong buhay, and 'yung ganitong opportunity na makapaglaro sa ganito kalaking competition."

"Nag-back track talaga 'yung mga hard work ko talaga kanina, kaya hindi ko na napigilan umiyak," he added. "Akala ko, hindi ako magiging emotional, pero sobrang hirap pigilan. In-all out ko na talaga today."

There will be little time for Yulo to celebrate: he returns to action tomorrow evening, this time on the vault final, where he hopes to write even more history.

"Medyo nabawasan naman din po 'yung stress sa utak ko po. And siyempre, kailangan ko pa rin po mag-focus kasi mabigat pa rin po 'yung vault," says Yulo, who was world champion on vault in 2021. "Gusto ko pa rin i-take 'yun na opportunity na makapag-uwi po ng another medal."

The Golden Boy delivered for Team Philippines.

Carlos Yulo, tipped as one of the country's brightest medal hopes in the 2024 Paris Olympics, lived up to lofty expectations as he won gold in the floor exercise in men's artistic gymnastics.

Under the bright lights of the Bercy Arena on Saturday night, Yulo bested seven other competitors -- and enormous pressure -- as he scored a massive 15.000 after a clean routine which was tied for the highest difficulty level.

Performing third, Yulo had to wait for five other finalists -- including Great Britain's Jake Jarman, who had topped the qualifying in the apparatus -- to finish their routines. Jarman scored a 14.933, behind Israel's Artem Dolgopyat, who put up a 14.966 just before Yulo performed. The gold medalist in floor exercise in Tokyo, Dolgopyat was relegated to silver this time around.

Yulo maintained his lead through the rest of the competitors but waited with bated breath for the score of Great Britain's Luke Whitehouse to be flashed. When Whitehouse -- the final competitor -- was given a score of 14.466, Yulo yelled in elation -- an emotion felt throughout the Philippines.

"I just went for it, I didn't hesitate," said Yulo of his performance.

This is the Philippines' second gold medal in the Olympics, after Hidilyn Diaz's weightlifting triumph in Tokyo in 2021. 

For Yulo, the gold is redemption: he had failed to qualify in the floor exercise final in Tokyo, and finished fourth in the vault. But three years later, the Filipino dynamo has done what he has set out to do, and stepped to the top of the podium in his pet event. 

"I'm so overwhelmed. I'm feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always," said Yulo. "He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well."

Yulo has a chance at one more medal in the vault final, set for Sunday evening at the Bercy Arena.

Yulo had advanced to the final of the all-around, floor exercise and vault, eventually finishing 12th in the individual all-around last Thursday.

He placed second in the qualifying of the floor exercise with a score of 14.766, behind Jarman (14.966). Meanwhile, he was in sixth place in qualification in the vault after scoring 14.683.

China's Xiao Ruoteng, the Tokyo floor bronze medallist, slumped to last in the eight-man final after hopping out of bounds after his opening jump to finish with 13.933.

Xiao had been bidding for gold to add to his silver in the men's team event and bronze in the all-around competition at the Paris Games.

Filipino fans were ecstatic about winning the first gold medal in Paris 2024 – the second-ever in Olympic history -after Carlos Edriel Yulo produced a spectacular performance to win the men's floor exercise final at the Paris Games on Saturday (August 3).

He earned the Philippines their first-ever Olympic medal in gymnastics.

Yulo's gold medal is also only the second-ever top prize won by the Philippines across both the Summer and Winter Games, and the first in the men's category. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz struck gold in Tokyo three years ago.

"It means a lot. It's a national pride for us. This is the second gold medal for the Philippines in its 100 years participating in the modern Olympics. So this is truly, truly special. Truly special for the Philippines,” said 42-year-old Filipino fan Nik Tan outside of Bercy Arena.

Filipino athletes at the Paris Games have been promised a fully furnished, two-bedroom condominium in Taguig City if they win a gold medal.

Twenty-two tourists were rescued after being stranded on a promenade when a river overflowed its banks at Fukiware Falls in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, on Monday.

At around 10:30 a.m., a call was made to 119 reporting that people had been stranded on the promenade due to rising water levels, Kyodo News reported.

According to the fire department, the promenade was blocked by the flooding, leaving 20 adults and two children stranded at one point, but they were all rescued within about an hour.

A heavy rain warning had been issued Monday morning for Numata City.

Fukiware Falls is a nationally designated natural monument formed by the erosion of the river bed of the Katashina River, and is one of the prefecture's leading tourist attractions. It is seven meters high and over 30 meters wide, and the spectacular sight of water flowing into a cleft in the rocks at the bottom of the river is popular with tourists.

There is a two-kilometer-long walking path that allows visitors to get close to the falls, but according to the local tourist association, the city closed the path at around 10 a.m. on Monday due to rising water levels in the river.

When a path is closed, security guards around the falls are supposed to guide tourists to a safe location, but because the river rose suddenly, and they were unable to do so.

POLIS DIRAJA MALAYSIA (PDRM) mengenal pasti motif pembunuhan Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah disebabkan berlakunya perselisihan hubungan, kata Ketua Polis Selangor, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.

Beliau dilaporkan berkata, laporan siasatan kes sudah dilengkapkan dan suspek yang juga anggota polis berusia 26 tahun akan didakwa di mahkamah pada Jumaat.

“Kita sudah selesai (siasatan) dan kita pun sudah mendapat arahan untuk membuat pertuduhan di Mahkamah Kuala Kubu Bharu di bawah Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan,” katanya memetik laporan.

Mengulas lanjut mengenai penemuan beberapa barangan peribadi dipercayai milik Nur Farah Kartini dalam operasi pencarian di Sungai Trolak, Perak, Hussein berkata, ia sudah cukup untuk digunakan bagi mendakwa suspek.

Jelasnya, polis bagaimanapun masih menunggu laporan pihak hospital mengenai punca kematian mangsa.

Mayat Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah yang dilaporkan hilang di Tanjung Malim, Perak sejak 11 Julai lalu ditemukan di ladang sawit Kampung Seri Keledang, kira-kira 6 petang pada 15 Julai lalu.

Mangsa dipercayai dibunuh individu dikenali dan polis turut menahan anggota polis berpangkat lans koperal, dipercayai teman lelakinya.

Suspek kemudian ditahan reman untuk siasatan mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan.
