ALLOWANCE FOR MPs CONFIMS CUT IN DEVELOPMENT - SAYS ANWAR

PORT DICKSON, NEGERI SEMBILAN (FEBRUARY 03, 2023) : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that the development allowance for Members of Parliament (MPs) has been reduced to RM 1.3 million from RM 3.8 million.

 

Anwar said this move was meant to better control the country's finances and would be implemented in stages.

 

" This allowance is the development allocations of MPs coordinated by the District and Land Office, and State Development Officer, (being reduced) due to economic constraints.

 

" It will be done in stages. This will set an early example, meaning MPs don't mind the cut although they are not personal contributions but are development allocations," he told reporters at Warung Pak Salleh here today.

 

However, the government would consider extending additional allocations if there were pressing needs in a particular parliamentary constituency, such as for repairing infrastructure, he said.

 

Media reports have said the constituency allocations for government backbencher MPs this year have been slashed by more than 65 per cent, from RM 3.8 million to RM 1.3 million.

 

According to the reports, the amount consists of a RM 1 million outright grant and another RM 300,000 for service centre operations.

 

Earlier, the prime minister mingled with the people and ate rojak and Chinese fried rice. He was accompanied by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

 

" I know the community, state government officers and political leaders in Port Dickson. The army and police here too give good cooperation. I should be here more often. Glad to meet old friends, and the rojak pasembur tastes good," said the former Port Dickson MP.

SINGAPORE (FEBRUARY 01, 2023) :Singapore has detained an 18-year-old man, accusing him of supporting the Islamic State group and planning to carry out attacks, security officials said today.

 

Muhammad Irfan Danyal Mohamad Nor, a Singaporean student, was detained in December 2022 under the Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial for up to two (2) years.

 

He became radicalised after viewing Islamic State group propaganda online, authorities said in a statement, adding that he wanted to use social media to gather fighters to conduct attacks in Singapore.

 

Authorities said his plans included recruiting a suicide car bomber to attack a military camp as well as bombing a grave site.

 

" At the point of arrest, he was determined to commit violence," said Minister for Law and Home Affairs . Shanmugam.

 

Such cases are rare in the multicultural and multi-racial city-state.

 

In year 2020, authorities detained a 16-year-old who planned to attack two mosques in Singapore after being influenced by a massacre of Muslim worshippers in New Zealand.

 

The following year, a 20-year-old Singaporean Muslim was arrested under the same law, with authorities accusing him of planning a deadly stabbing spree against Jews at a synagogue.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (February 01, 2023) :Half a million workers went on strike in Britain today, calling for higher wages in the largest such walkout in over a decade, closing schools and severely disrupting transport.

Europe is battling a cost-of-living crisis and the latest strikes come a day after more than 1.27 million took to the streets in France, upping pressure on the French government over pension reform plans.

Britain's umbrella labour organisation the Trades Union Congress (TUC) called it the "BIGGEST DAY OF STRIKE ACTION SINCE 2011". Teachers and train drivers were among the latest groups to act, as well as border workers at United Kingdom air and seaports.

" We are striking because for the past 10 years we had effectively had a pay cut," said job centre worker and union representative Graham, who preferred not to give his last name.

 

" Some of our members, even though they are working, still have to make visits to food banks," he told AFP.

 

" Not only are wages not keeping up, but things like fares, council tax and rents are going up. Anything we get is eaten away."

 

Britain has witnessed months of strikes by tens of thousands of workers - including postal staff, lawyers, nurses and employees in the retail sector - as United Kingdom inflation raced above 11 per cent, the highest level in more than 40 years.

 

' NO MAGIC WAND '

At London's King's Cross rail station, Kate Lewis, a 50-year-old charity worker, said she sympathised with the strikers despite her train being delayed.

" I understand. We are all in the same boat. All impacted by inflation," she said.

But government and company bosses are standing firm over wage demands.

With thousands of schools closed for the day, Education Minister Gillian Keegan told Times Radio she was "DISAPPOINTED" teachers had walked out.

Union boss Mark Serwotka said the government's position was 'UNSUSTAINBLE".

"It's not feasible that they can sit back with this unprecedented amount of industrial action growing, because it's half a million today, " he told Sky News.

" Next week, we have paramedics, and we have nurses, then will then be the firefighters, " he added, warning that unions were prepared to strike throughout the summer.

" Nothing would give me more pleasure than, to wave a magic wand and have all of you paid lots more," British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told public health workers on Monday.

NATIONWIDE RALLIES

" An important part of us getting a grip of inflation and halving it is making sure the government's responsible with its borrowing," he said.

" If that gets out of control that makes it worse and it's about making pay settlements reasonable and fair, " Sunak added.

The latest official data shows 1.6 million working days were lost from June-November last year because of strikes - the highest six-month total in more than three decades - according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

A total of 467,000 working days were lost to walkouts in November alone, the highest level since 2011, the ONS added.

Alongside the strikes, unions are also staging rallies across the country against the Conservative government's plans to legislate against public sector strike action.

Organised by the TUC, the nationwide protests will insist that " THE RIGHT TO STRIKE IS A FUNDAMENTAL BRITISH LIBERTY," said the group's General Secretary paul Nowak.

Sunak has introduced a draft law requiring some frontline workers to maintain a minimum level of service during walkouts.

The prime minister has defended the plans as "REASONABLE" and in line with other European countries.

BANGKOK, THAILAND (JANUARY 25, 2023): Thailand Police seized 1.1 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine in less than a week, officers said Tuesday, as the kingdom cracks down on smuggling that has surged since the country's borders reopened.

The haul comes after a spike in clashes between police smugglers in the kingdom's remote northern hinterlands, long a hub for the trade in illegal narcotics.

Following a tip-off, police arrested 10 Thai nationals in a series of raids in the north and south of the kingdom.

" Some of these drugs were kept for a period of time before being transported to the southernmost provinces, and they were supposed to be shipped to other countries later," said Police General Chinnapat Sarasin, Deputy National Police Chief.

He said Thailand was " Surrounded by drugs manufacturing hotspots", but that the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented smugglers from moving their wares.

" Now that the country has been reopened, the pent-up products are just being shipped in non-stop," he said.

 

Police said in a statement that a transnational drugs gang was behind the illicit trade.

 

In the first operation, officers found 731 kilograms (1,600 pounds) of crystal meth, also known by the street name "ice", in two raids in the southern Thailand provinces of Phatthalung and Surat Thani.

 

Following a tip-off, officers arrested three men Thursday after they discovered 688 kilograms of crystal meth in three pick-up trucks, which they believe was smuggled into. Thailand's northeast before being transported south.

 

Police later arrested four more people after finding 43 kilograms of the drug, which was being sold via the popular Thailand messaging app LINE.

 

On Sunday, another man was arrested in northern Chiang Rai province as he prepared to transport roughly 300 kilograms of ice - hidden in tea bags - south to Satun.

 

Finally, around 114 kilos were confiscated in central Nakhon Sawan and Patum Thani provinces, after the drugs were found hidden in coffee bag packages. Two men were arrested.

 

Southeast Asia is awash with meth, and authorities netted a record billion pills across the Asian region in 2021, according to a United Nations report.

IPOH, PERAK (JANUARY 29, 2023) : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the appointment of former Permatang Pauh member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is also his daughter, as his senior economic and financial advisor was made based on her qualifications.

 

Anwar said Nurul Izzah had a first degree in engineering and a second one in public and social policy from John Hopkins University, United States, and was appointed to assist him in the Prime Minister's Department (PMD) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

 

However, he said Nurul Izzah would not receive any allowances for her role.

" Even I don't have a finance-related degree or certificate, but I was the Minister of Finance for eight (8) years (in the 1990s). Even the ministers in (the previous) Perikatan Nasional (government) do have (the relevant) degrees or certificates, but when it comes to us, they bring it up.

 

" So, is it true that a health minister must be a doctor? And a water minister must be an engineer ? As for Nurul Izzah, she has an engineering degree and a public policy degree. Indeed, I asked her to help me as an advisor at the PMD and MOF," he said.

 

Anwar, who is also Tambun MP, was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Tambun Parliamentary Service Centre here. Hulu Kinta state assemblyman Mohamad Arafat Varisai Mahamad was also present.

 

Nurul Izzah was reported today to have confirmed her appointment as senior economic and financial advisor to the Prime Minister, adding that she began serving effective January 03, 2023.

 

Meanwhile, Anwar in his opening speech said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was instructed to take action against parties involved in corruption regardless of their party affiliation or position, including those working in the Prime Minister's Office.

 

" No matter how rich the country is, it is impossible for us to raise its status and dignity, and defend the fate of the people (if there is corruption), that's why I say the first thing is to restore good governance, rule and law.

 

" Starting from the top,  from the Prime Minister to the ministers, menteris besar, state government and people's representatives, (they have to) stop this corrupt practice and culture," PM Anwar said.
