PALM BEACH (April 5, 2023): Donald Trump offered a full-throated defense of his conduct Tuesday in his first public remarks since being charged over hush money payments to a porn star, blasting the criminal prosecution as “an insult to our country”.

Hours earlier the 76-year-old former US president pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts in a dramatic hearing in New York that transfixed the nation — and began the countdown to the first ever criminal trial of an American president.

“I never thought anything like this could happen in America — never thought it could happen,” Trump told an audience of several hundred donors, political allies, and other supporters after returning to Mar-a-Lago, his beachfront mansion in southern Florida.

“The only crime that I’ve committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it … It’s an insult to our country.”

Trump — the frontrunner in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination — said from a stage festooned with American flags in an opulent gold-and-cream ballroom that “radical left” prosecutors across the country were out to get him “at any cost”.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is prosecuting Trump for cooking his company’s books to hide payments he arranged to adult film actress Stormy Daniels days before the 2016 election, to cover up an alleged sexual encounter a decade earlier.

Trump’s former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg is serving a five-month jail term for the same charge of falsifying business records.

Manhattan prosecutors say Trump “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election”.

A “statement of facts” released alongside the indictment included details of hush money payments to Daniels, Playboy model Karen McDougal and a former Trump Tower doorman claiming to have a story about a child Trump had out of wedlock.

– ‘Darkest hours’ –

Daniels was paid US$130,000 by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, while McDougal and the doorman got US$150,000, and US$30,000 respectively from AMI, the publishers of supermarket tabloid the National Enquirer.

Bragg alleges that Trump and his allies “also took steps that mischaracterised, for tax purposes, the true nature of the payments”.

Trump and his lawyers have accused Bragg of over-reaching in his characterisation of the allegations.

The one-time reality TV star had sent a fundraising email shortly before flying back to Florida, saying that since the news of his indictment broke, his campaign had raised over US$10 million.

“While we are living through the darkest hours of American history, I can say that at least for this moment right now, I am in great spirits,” Trump said.

The twice-impeached Republican is the first sitting or former American president to be criminally indicted.

Earlier in the Manhattan courtroom, he answered “not guilty” to all charges in a clear voice, sitting with hunched shoulders and at times looking annoyed but mostly listening cooperatively.

Judge Juan Merchan said a trial could potentially start as soon as January — a month before the presidential primaries kick off — although Trump’s lawyers have indicated they would want it pushed back to next spring.

– More serious charges –

In a spectacle that played out on live television — with rival protesters rallying outside — the hearing marked a watershed moment for the US criminal and political system.

A crowd of hundreds had gathered, with pro-Trump protesters — sporting “MAGA” hats and attire emblazoned with the American flag — yelling slurs at their opponents.

Trump for years rejoiced in his reputation as a playboy but has always denied the tryst with Daniels, which would have occurred just after his third wife Melania gave birth.

He faces a series of separate criminal investigations at state and federal level that could result in further — more serious — charges between now and Election Day.

They include his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state of Georgia, his handling of classified documents, and his involvement in the storming of the US Capitol on Jan 6, 2021.

While Republicans have largely rallied around Trump, President Joe Biden — mindful of his potential 2024 rival’s accusations that the judicial system is being politically “weaponised” — has refrained from commenting in any detail.

SINGAPORE WELCOMING 2.9 MILLION VISITORS IN Q1, TWO-THIRDS OF PRE-PANDEMIC NUMBERS

SINGAPORE - Singapore welcomed more than 2.9 million visitors in the first quarter of 2023, about two-thirds of pre-Covid-19 numbers, as the recovery of the tourism sector continues.

The number is 62 per cent of 2019’s first quarter figure of 4.7 million visitors, said the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Wednesday.

While the total number of visitors has not caught up, those who came here stayed longer – an average of 3.97 days, up from 3.34 days in 2019.

STB said it will work with stakeholders to ensure that Singapore has a good mix of high-quality attractions, hotels, events, tour experiences and other offerings to secure Singapore’s tourism future.

To showcase even more of Singapore, STB and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) are partnering to launch a $10 million Singapore On-screen Fund to support the creation of entertainment content that spotlights and markets Singapore.

This is to keep Singapore “top of mind when travellers pick that next destination”, said Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan. He was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of STB’s Tourism Industry Conference, held at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Selected media conglomerates, major streamers and production studios with regional or global networks will be invited to apply for the fund.

Proposed projects must be set in Singapore and launched before the first quarter of 2027, with these TV and film projects – which spotlight and market Singapore to global audiences – receiving funding for up to 30 per cent of the costs, including production and marketing expenditures.

Mr Tan cited Singapore’s support of projects such as the 2018 Hollywood film Crazy Rich Asians and, more recently, the hit K-drama series Little Women and HBO’s Food Affair With Mark Wiens, as examples of how branded entertainment can be a powerful tool to capture and grow mindshare beyond traditional channels.

“With this joint fund, we hope to catalyse production of major film and TV projects set in Singapore, and made in collaboration with international media and entertainment partners,” he said.

This will provide home-grown talents opportunities to work with their international counterparts and allow their people and companies to grow capabilities and increase global exposure, he added.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, STB chief executive Keith Tan said that the On-screen Fund is not meant to drive immediate conversions to travel, but to move beyond traditional media outreach methods to media such as streaming platforms and “make sure that Singapore is appearing in front of people’s eyeballs”.

“Many other destinations are competing with us or throwing a lot of effort and manpower into boosting the destination’s attractiveness... we need to do the same, but we need to do it smartly as well,” he said.

As travel recovers, Singapore will continue to work with stakeholders to focus on six key areas, added Mr Keith Tan who spoke at the same event.

This includes become a leading Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) destination, a top culinary destination and an ideal family-friendly destination.

Market segments and areas of opportunity that are piquing STB’s interest include solo female travellers, as well as spectators who travel around the world for sporting events such as football, cricket or cycling.

Entertainment and lifestyle-related events are also an area of interest. Mr Keith Tan said that STB has observed that there is a growing tendency for people to spend money and travel to go to a different city for an entertainment or lifestyle event.

“We are exploring possible partnerships with globally influential event promoters around the world to anchor more of their events and branded IP (intellectual property) here in Singapore,” said Mr Keith Tan.

“We want to curate such events better so that there are multiple peaks in a year, beyond F1... we hope to create a few more peaks around different sorts of sports, entertainment or lifestyle events,” he added, citing examples such as South-east Asia’s largest art fair ART SG and the Singapore Food Festival.

Separately, STB is also working on developing the first global sustainability standards for the Mice and attractions industries, in collaboration with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the Singapore Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers, and Association of Singapore Attractions.

These industry standards will be launched progressively from 2024.

A new Tourism Careers Campaign has also been soft-launched with the aim of inspiring locals to join the sector.

While the total tourism workforce has recovered to 66,000 as at December 2022 – or around 80 per cent of 2019’s pre-Covid-19 levels – Mr Keith Tan noted that many industry players are still suffering serious manpower issues.

He highlighted the need to drive productivity and innovate to alleviate labour needs. Hence, to help attractions on their digital journey, an Attractions Tech Roadmap will be launched in the second quarter of 2023.

The guide will help attractions digitalise and transform their key business functions such as customer service, sales and marketing.

In January, STB announced that international visitor arrivals to Singapore are expected to hit 12 million to 14 million in 2023, with full tourism recovery expected by 2024.

Tourism receipts are also anticipated to net $18 billion to $21 billion.

In 2019, the Republic saw a record 19.1 million visitors and $27.7 billion in revenue.

EL BAGRE, Colombia (April 1, 2023): The giant skeletons of burnt and dismantled gold dredgers litter the rivers of northwest Colombia, where the government is waging a full-out war on illegal mining.

Nicknamed “dragons” by locals, the massive machines used to suck gold from riverbeds are blamed for destroying the environment and financing organized crime.

But their dismantling in a massive army operation has been met with hostility by communities who depend on mining for their daily survival.

Around El Bagre in the gold-rich Bajo Cauca region, a protest by miners that started early this month has been marked by acts of vandalism the government blamed on the Gulf Clan drug cartel for instigating.

But Luis Manuel Campo, 32, one of the miners, insisted to AFP that “we have nothing to do with criminal groups.”

Campo co-owns a dredger with three other people.

“We are not hiding. We just want the persecution to stop,” he said.

“We want to be formally recognized as miners so that we can work in peace, without stigma.”

The names of the villages in this region such as Zaragoza and Caceres serve as a reminder of the Spanish colonizers who were already extracting gold in Bajo Cauca in the 17th century.

It became a bastion of rightwing paramilitary fighters in the 1990s, and is now a stronghold of the Gulf Clan, Colombia’s most powerful cartel.

President Gustavo Petro this month called off a ceasefire with the Clan, accusing it of being behind attacks on civilians committed by protesting miners.

Criminal groups in Colombia make almost as much money from illegal mining as they do from trafficking cocaine, authorities say.

With a recent rise in gold prices, Bajo Cauca has been gripped by a new type of gold rush, with poor communities scouring the gravelly river beds with shovels, bulldozers and dredging machines.

“Apart from gold, there is nothing here,” said Campo.

Locals say about 350 dredging machines are active in the region — big and small — on top of those operated legally by the Mineros Aluvial multinational.

The illegal dredgers range from simple machines with makeshift conveyer belts to larger mechanical contraptions that require several divers to guide a massive vacuum pipe under the dark water.

Then there are the “dragons” — three-storey, 20-meter (66-foot) long boats with massive engines.

There are about two dozen of these in the Bajo Cauca region.

One “dragon” costs about half a million dollars, their owners tell AFP.

“At the current (gold) price, it is profitable,” said Alex Cossio, 41, who runs one of these monsters.

One “dragon” can extract up to two kilograms (4.4 pounds) of gold per day — worth more than $50,000, according to a police official who did not want to be named.

AFP visited a number of these beasts, including one named “Native” that has been operational for only two months in a branch of the Nechi river.

“The (army) helicopters fly over us every day, we are afraid,” said Cossio, who insisted there was no link to organized crime.

“Diesel, food, logistics… We buy everything in the neighborhood, a large number of families live from our activity,” he added.

AFP observed at least six “dragons” lying mutilated and burnt by the riverside, some already being repaired by their owners.

There is no official data on how many dredgers have been destroyed.

“We tried to stop them, it was terrible,” said Julia Tatis, who owns a small eatery, of a raid this month on three of the machines in Nueva Esperanza, a poor hamlet on the water’s edge.

“The military just arrived saying we are the Gulf Clan. And they burned everything,” added dredge owner Juan Manuel Carcamo.

‘ DAMAGE ALREADY DONE ’

Campo insists the dredges are working river beds “that were already exploited by Mineros 40 years ago… The damage has already been done.”

Lawyer Francisco Arrieta Franco is an advocate for the miners who he describes as victims.

“It is false to say the dredges belong to the Clan,” he told AFP.

“It’s complicated and expensive to operate a dredger. Criminals are more interested in extortion, which is everywhere in this region.”

Locals say the miners are subject to Gulf extortion rather than perpetrators of it.

In a gold shop in El Bagre, an employee warned of trouble if the government continues to “harass” the miners.

“We need these dredgers to work and to eat,” shouted the employee, who did not want to be named. “They serve the whole community!”

Added a miner, also on condition of anonymity: “It is when you have an empty stomach that you are forced to do illegal things.”

PUTRAJAYA (April 01, 2023): The Cabinet on Friday (March 31) agreed to establish a high-level committee to deal with the issue of contract doctors which is a hot topic now, said Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

In a statement today, she said the committee will comprise representatives of several ministries and agencies including the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

There were rumours of a strike by contract doctors on April 3 to 5 and the DoctorsMalaysia Instagram page is urging contract doctors nationwide to join the strike or resign en masse on April 1.

Dr Zaliha said the Ministry of Health (MoH) did not have any further information about the strike, however, it was of the view that a strike is not the best solution to problems related to the medical profession or any other professional scheme.

“On the contrary, the move needs to be considered carefully because health service is critical service, involving human lives and the well-being of the people,” she said.

In the meantime, she said the government has from time to time responded to the problems and demands raised by health workers, including creating permanent posts, sponsoring specialist training or advanced training, time-based promotions, opportunities to be promoted to special grades and creating grades UD56 for medical professionals and so on.

She said that the Ministry of Health is always aware of the arising problems and requests and ensures that they are being examined in accordance with the current issues and given appropriate solutions based on the country’s economic capabilities.

“Therefore, a strike is not the best solution and as public servants, whether permanent or contract, they are subject to the integrity of public servants and Public Service Ethics,” said Dr Zaliha.

BEIJING, CHINA (March 31, 2023): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysian businesses overseas to help in rebuilding the economy back home by promoting and facilitating more investments into the country.

“The primary issue is how we (should) rebuild our country through massive domestic and foreign direct investments.

“You can invest overseas but what is needed is to refocus investments back into Malaysia. The time is now,“ he said during an iftar event attended by over 300 people comprising Malaysian businesspeople and China’s Muslim community leaders here tonight.

The event, hosted by the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (Maycham China) and the Embassy of Malaysia in China, was held in conjunction with the Prime Minister’s official visit here this week.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, called on the ministers accompanying him on the visit to do the necessary in facilitating the inflow of investments into the country.

“To my colleagues here, my message is clear. We must do whatever is required and necessary to facilitate and ease the doing of business in attracting more investments into the country,” he said.

On his meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping, Anwar said he was impressed by the humility shown by the senior statesman.

The Prime Minister had called on Xi at the Great Hall of the People here this afternoon.
